Homecoming Robert Downey Jr IS Tony Stark / Iron Man

Honestly this is seemingly a bad idea. I don't want Tony "Alfred" here, because Stark is getting up there in age. Take a vacation already. I don't see how you can make Stark a focal point in the first film and not continually fall back to that. If RDJ keeps getting paid 50 million I'm sure he'd still be willing to do it, but this is excessive milking of a popular character. I think Sony is having more say than we feel. Joining the Avengers, even to set up Spidey's role in Infinity War, is a bad move. I feel Spidey's role should be more of a guest appearance type of deal.

That's what I was originally hoping for.

It seems like there's a conflict here with fans of Spider-Man the character vs. fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As a big fan of both, this is my most hyped movie of Phase 3 outside of IW. Bring it on.

I'm like you. I'm a fan of both and I have been waiting for this deal for as long as the MCU has been around. So far, I have not been disappointed.

I dont think Spidey will offically join to the Avengers as full member. So people shouldnt b**ch about it much. He will much act as he did in Civil War and make appearance when he needs. Cause I personally dont see Peter Parker sitting in Avengers tower whole day. Guy has a job in Bugle, school and homework, private life and secret identity.

I think he will remain honorary member of Avengers and act when something big comes up like that guy Thanos.

I'm wondering how much Peter Parker knew about the Accords. Tony didn't seem to tell him much, from what we got to see. And the end credits tease I think implies subtly enough that he will be on his own the next movie.

Basically, I'm thinking the Stark/Parker relationship post-Civil War might play out just like it did in the books into the Initiative run. As in, the were not friends.

I kind of hope so. In my opinion the public has been to friendly with Spider-Man in the last 5 movies, compared to what is the norm in the comic. People don't like him, they buy into the Bugle. Until he saves one of them, and even then not always! If the Accords are in place in the long run I see Spider-Man on the illegal side of it.

Agreed. He'll probably officially join in phase 4 when he's a college student. I could see IW2 end with Cap or whoever handing Peter an Avengers card, and he says "sorry, let me get my high school diploma first."

I can't see why Peter and Tony wouldn't be friends in Homecoming, post Civil War. There's nothing Tony has really done that has upset their relationship.

In fact, is there anything Tony Stark has done at all in the movie that would paint him in the same negative light that many readers saw him in the aftermath of the comic story?

No, the movie did a very good job of keeping it balanced. Moreso than the comic book. But in the Civil War event book Tony and the pro-registration side have made up their mind by the end of the first issue. The "Road to Civil War" stories in several books leading up to the event showed Tony debating the registration act and trying to prevent it from passing or at least helping to make sure it doesn't go to far. This was wisely put into the movie in some way or shape.

But that doesn't mean Spider-Man won't find out about something like the underwater prison where Avengers were held. I don't think he'd be up for that. And he needs to be a vigilante, something Stark and his Avengers aren't supposed to allow. If Evans gets his cameo even Captain America can have a hand in it too.

I'm cool with this. I don't really get the concerns about Iron Man saving the day instead of Spider-Man at the end or Spider-Man being ineffective without IM's help in light of how CW ended where:

Iron Man got his ass handed to him by Captain America at the end despite being probably the more popular character.

Marvel isn't going to shortchange Spidey in his own film.

Plus, I wouldn't have a problem with Tony playing a Lucius Fox-type role where he's the means for Peter to get the resources to build his own gadgets.

Or Spidey can be fighting the main villain while Tony is off somewhere banging Aunt May.

There is no way RDJ should get equal salary for Civil War and this film. That's my complaint. And I am proportioning salary equivalently to screen time and importance in the story. I don't know what RDJ made for Civil War but I'm guessing it was at least 50 million and possibly back end. There is no Civil War without Tony. There definitely is a Spidey story without Tony. The roles should not be comparable in anyway, and therefore the salaries should be weighted accordingly.

If Sony is willing to pay that tag then more power to them. But I was assuming that this would be an Ant-Man in Civil War type role, or a Hawkeye in Civil War. Just suit up Spidey, maybe have a quick action scene, and get out. If RDJ wasn't willing to sign for a trivial role as such, then obviously the role would have had to be expanded. If he's getting lead co-star time like a Pepper Potts or Rhodey, that's a problem for me. That's three straight years of Tony Stark in major roles in a Marvel produced tentpoles. I have issues with that.

Nah, it's not. I don't plan on watching those films in theaters. GotG and Thor is not my cup of tea. I also skipped out on the Garfield movies. I liked Civil War though. I'm willing to give Spidey one more chance before I completely move on.

I watched GotG on TV, but I don't think I got through the whole film. I was getting bored and sleepy. My little cousins would eat that stuff up though, as I would have done when I was their age.

Since this is based in New York, I gather Stark will be based at Avengers Tower, perhaps Peter will get a tour of the R&D levels.
