It's a masterpiece IMO. I think a lot of people just enjoy to be contrarian, especially online.

That’s a bummer that the Extended version is only four minutes longer.

Wasn’t Eggers’ original cut three hours or something?

Still, it’ll be my third time watching the film.

From what I’ve read he had complete final cut so the theatrical cut is his directors cut.

People laughing at Ellen's seizures are seriously weird as hell.

I read people saying that viewers laughed a lot at those scenes and even the ending shot or other parts - and from reading some commentary online, it really makes me wonder.

I think there's a lot to be said that current audiences (not all, but a good chunk) have come of age in an era where there's not been a lot of unironic storytelling in mainstream blockbusters. Any sincerity and seriousness is supposed to be undercut by quips or jokes, or some form of "This is really happening?"

They can't take anything seriously.

And Eggers - while not devoid of humour - makes sincere films.

Tbf, it's par for the course for an Eggers film to have some bits of comedy in there

The smash cut from both Thomas about to scream into a goose noise AND the smash cut from Ellen saying about Thomas being very important to him just faceplanted on the floor made me burst out laughing
