Rumor: PS4 to be released in 2012

Absolutely not.

Sony releasing the PlayStation 3 a year after the Xbox 360 was actually good for them. It allowed them to develop a console that is very reliable hardware wise and allowed them to get blu-ray to take off (blu-ray was not ready in 2005). The Xbox 360 on the other hand is a rushed piece of hardware because Microsoft was so adamant on releasing a year ahead of Sony and Nintendo, if they weren't so determined to have that head start, you wouldn't be seeing the massive RROD problems that has plagued the Xbox brand's image.

What really hurt Sony was that they decided to release a console at $599 US Dollars with only one game worth playing (Resistance: Fall of Man). With the Xbox 360 you had it launched at $399 and had several titles that were pretty damn good launch titles and followed up with their momentum while PlayStation 3 owners have waited quite a while for Sony to start building some. And dare I say that their advertising campaign was utterly atrocious.

And in the end, the year head start has really amounted to nothing with the Xbox 360 in last place in Japan and Europe and is expected to fall from second place to third place (which is something that Microsoft did not want at all). Nintendo has slaughtered both Sony and Microsoft with the Wii and Sony has picked up massive momentum with the PS3 Slim, excellent first party titles, and an advertising campaign that isn't ******ed (the Kevin Butler ads are freaking awesome :awesome:).

I have a feeling 360 will rise to second again because of all of it's exclusives next year (Halo: Reach, Mass Effect 2, Fable 3 Splinter Cell: Conviction & Alan Wake for starters) & project Natal. This was PS3's year to shine because Sony realized that people weren't going to buy a $400 console when there's 2 cheaper ones out & they finally got exclusives that were worth something. (Uncharted 2 FTW :awesome:)

This news might not make me get a PS3 next year. Why get one, when I could just wait? Unless Sony's going to do a PS3 on us & not have PS3 games backwards compatible (I want to play GOW3 & Uncharted 2 badly. They're the main reasons I want a PS3)

First, it´s only a rumor, it might not be true.
Second, even if you buy a PS3 in 2010, you still have 3 years ahead (2010 itself, 2011 and 2012, because consoles usually only are released in the Fall).
Then, if you only get the PS4 in 2013, that makes it 4 years of PS3 time.

I´m getting a PS3 in 2012, when Kratos arrives.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the 360 have a second wind because of Natal, but I'm not holding my breath. Too little, too late to capture the Wii audience and the PS2 casual audience.

I don't see Natal having a huge effect - it's basically a glorified Eye Toy. Because the majority of people probably aren't going to buy Natal (and even if 60% did, there'd still be 40% who didn't) there won't be much done with Natal in terms of big hits. Companies won't want to spend much dev time and resources on a feature most people won't even use. Nor will it help sell consoles unless they come up with some killer app that is only on Natal that makes EVERYBODY buy Natal.

I think that most of the people who are going to buy Natal are people who already own an Xbox 360. And I think that most of the features that are going to be developed for Natal will end up on the PS3 as well because Sony is turning the PlayStation Eye into Natal as well.

Bah, I won't be buying another £300/$500 machine so soon after the last one..

Some of the popular gaming franchises are still adjusting to the capabilities of the current system(s)

Exactly. I bought my PS3 just last year. My family had the old PS1 from 1996-2001 and I had the PS2 from 2001-2008. I ain't getting no PS3 in 2012, especially since the others were in use for over 5 years. The shortest time I've ever had a console was the GameCube from 2004-2007.

Yeah, no matter when the next console cycle starts I'm going to ride the current one as long as possible. This generation has made me lose all taste for wanting to be an early adopter.

Well, lasting ten years doesn't necessarily translate to no successor for ten years, just that it will be on the market for ten years. For example, they had the same ten year plan for the PS2, which was released in 2000, and the PS3 came six years later, but the PS2 is still on the market.

I believe Sony said that they plan on the Playstation 3 lasting at least ten years. The console released in '06 so I think PS4 will release in 2016.

Don't quote me on this, but I think they stated the ten year plan in their E3 press conference stating thats why they were delaying it. They want to make a machine that is going to last a while. :csad:

Possibly the most misunderstood thing said by anyone this console generation. Just because they're on a ten year plan doesn't mean they're going to wait ten years to release another console. It just means they're going to support the current one for ten years. The PS1 was a ten+ year console and the PS2 is well on its way to becoming one as well.

[EDIT] Thank you, Teadrop.

lol...guess you missed on the Dreamcast. That was my shortest console, not by choice

Welp I got my dumb ass stamp for today. :o

Personally I don't care, if they are going to support the console for ten years why even bother getting another one? There is still a lot of untapped power in the Playstation 3 that I don't see them releasing another console anytime soon.

Now 360 on the other hand, thats a different story. But Sony actually took the time to craft a nice machine, why start another generation so soon? This one is just getting started.

For Sony at least.

Just because the console maker will support the system, doesnt mean developers will. All major projects have shifted to the PS3. The PS2s biggest titles now are PSP ports. Some developers like Activsion and EA still make multiplatform games for the PSP alongside the PSP and Wii, bc of the comparable power the 3 have, but its most often an inferior version to what the PS3 has to offer. You wont feel the difference within the year that a new console drops but after that, you'll see the quality in games shift. Usually at this point in a systems life cycle they would primarily be getting kiddie games and sports titles. The main reaon why that hasnt been the case for the PS2, is bc of the PSP. Theres definetly a reason for all serious gamers to make the jump before the 10 year cycle is done

I'm going to be honest. I hated the Dreamcast.

I was never a Sega fan with the only Sega system my family had was the original Sega Master System, and even then we played with the Nintendo far more.

But I outright hated the Dreamcast. For the same reason I hated the original Xbox, the god awful controller.

I think it´s official to say, Microsoft, unless they make something realllllly drastic, they are in for a gigantic fall, and they will lose second place in 2010.
I was just looking at the numbers, and .....
Not only the PS3 outsold the 360 on Black Friday, the two most pre-ordered games in the US at this point are: God of War and MAG

All of this just to say that, they can very well release a new console 3 years after the next Xbox, the playstation will always win.
Unless the real reason is the blur-ray drive, which, in this case, Microsoft needs to release one.....fast.

man the controller was great. While it lacked some features which have since become standard, I thought it was a pretty good one. I first played console FPS on that using the face buttons to move and analog stick to aim. I dont know how I was able to accomplish that as Ive attempted it with the PS controller, but I did it with Unreal Tournament, Outrigger and Quake and was pretty good at it. Plus I also liked the VMUs and thought that was a good idea that didnt quite take off

Still not too sure. I really hope the PS3 has a longer life, I don't want to buy one & then two years later have a new one come out.

I agree. The Dreamcast controller was perfectly fine in its day. The original Xbox controller was okay. The size didn't bother me so much as the face buttons did. They were far too convex and my thumb would hurt after playing for too long. The VMU was definately a cool accessory.

It seems like Sega has always tried to go their own way and it's a shame it worked out so badly for them.

To be honest, the black friday numbers did surprise me a bit. I'm sure most of us will agree, since none of us work for Sony or MS, the numbers aren't a big deal outside of wanting the console of our choice to do well enough to warrant it to continue to see big game releases. It's just that the US has been strong MS country all this gen. For it to have been 315k for the 360 in the US, and 450k for the PS3, that's a substantial difference. Outside of black friday I can understand because of the PS3's price drop, but on black friday itself both systems had a lot of awesome deals. Even more surpising tho was that the Wii did as well as both combined with 8-900K lol. Of course none of this even counts normal world wide sales as the numbers released for black friday were just the US sales, and not world wide weekly sales.

I am curious tho what counter offensive MS is going to pull, because pre Slim launch the 360 was about 8 million ahead, and now it's just barely over 6 million with Christmas still to come. Plus the PS3 still has GOW 3, MAG, Gran Tourismo 5, and Heavy Rain launching early next year, FFXIII releasing exclusively for it in Japan soon as well (of course the US release being PS3 and 360, but in the mean time it'll be PS3 only for a few months for Japan and importers), and their motion controls launch early next year as well (tho I'm not sure it'll make a big difference). I doubt MS is going to set still much longer, I wonder if they'll price drop again, or push up Natal's release, because the gap inbetween it and the PS3 is disappearing fast.

Edit - (took forever, Hype is being slow again) That's not to say the PS3 and 360 won't flip flop again in sales, they have been for a bit. Just curious to see if/how MS counters the PS3's recent upswing. Meanwhile Nintendo will probably just chug along not worrying about either lol (I honestly thought the Wii would have lost a little steam by now).
