I remember hanging around here in 2000 when all the casting rumours were about!

Wes Bentley, Health Ledger, Freddie Prinze Jr, heck, Jude foppin Law!

And then there were actors that the fans wanted, Nicholas Brandon being a good example. (Who would have guessed that he would have porkified so much?)

I have just watched all 4 seasons of Two Guys and a Girl, having only recently heard of it.

So my question is this: Why was Ryan Reynolds name not bandied about when the casting was being done?

(Forgive me if in fact it was, and my memory has failed me).

Didnt Reynolds only really get famous with Van Wilder? That came out after Spiderman.

Actually, Van Wilder came out a month before Spider-Man did, but the point still stands because they were well into completing the movie by then. Ryan Reynolds was not famous before the Van Wilder came out, so of course his name wasn't being dropped back in 2000.

Probably because Two Guys and Girl was a populat Sci-Fi/Fantasy show. Because looking at todays casting choices it seems that most of the choices come from those type of shows.

People on the net really need to learn the difference between TV actors and movie actors. There is a big difference.

Yeah, it's obvious that Sony were only considering movie actors at the time.

But that's not answering my question. This place was born as Spidermanhype.com. This is where we came to get the news on casting!

I'll rephrase the question slightly:

If there was fandom support for Nicholas Brandon to be cast as Peter Parker, why did no-one suggest Reynolds?

If you look at him at the time. he was funny, sarcastic, had an athletic build AND had brown eyes (remember the brown eyes fiasco?).

Now, ironically, he is a well known movie actor, a well known comics fan, and has the capacity to really bulk up.

I'll ask another question:

If you could turn back the clock, would you have preferred Reynolds over Tobey Maguire?

(I feel Maguire, in hindsight, is a bit short, a bit wimpy/girlie/effete, and was a bit out of shape for 2 and 3.)

No, Reynolds is much, much, MUCH too good looking to play Peter Parker. Plus in his movie career I've yet to see him make one good film. When Tobey was cast he had already made Cider House Rules, Ride with the Devil, Wonder Boys and Pleasentville. He had the look and the resumé

Fair points.

The first time I ever heard of/saw Reynolds was when I watched this really funny guy in Blade Trinity.

I saw that film in the theatre with my brother who knew of Van Wilder and Two Guys, and he proceeded to tell me about those roles.

If you had suggested Reynolds to me in 2000 I would have definitely gave a "No way". At that time I would have preferred Bentley over Maguire, only because I had not seen any of Maguires movies, and I had liked Bentley in American Beauty.

As for Reynolds I felt he was great in Waiting, Just Friends and Blade Trinity. Van Wilder not so much, but I know people who are of the opposite opinion on those films. I haven't seen Smokin Aces.

EDIT: BTw, Jack O'Lantern, are the same JOL from the Crawlspace?

Again because he wasn't well known then, he was just some guy on another sitcom. Nicholas Brandon was suggested because he became well known by Buffy, which has had a huge following.

Yep

I think Ryan could have done a fair job. I think he could pull off the one thing that Raimi has all but omitted from his movies- the fact that Spidey is an hillarious a**hole.

You can make anyone look like a nerd. I think that Reynolds would have been great as a College aged Peter Parker. He does look a lot like the Peter that is drawn in the comics now.

If he wasn't so tall, he's gotta be about 6'2", he'd have made an excellent Parker. He could act as a dork and nerd, that's not hard. And he could definitely pull of the confident, wisecracking Spider-man.

Ive thought ryan reynolds would be a good choice for a while now... the way he acted in blade 3 is just the persona spidey should have when he's in costume (minus some of the cursing). Funny comes natural to the guy. The height issue is probably the only problem, Spidey being the little 'bruce lee' guy that takes out enemies larger than him has always been part of his attraction. And speaking of attraction...

Jack o' lantern... reynolds is too good looking to play parker? lol what? Even if I were attracted to guys, I think I'd still find him alittle dorky lookin. Takes all kinds I suppose

Ryan Reynolds would of knocked it out of the park. He was my second choice after Nicholas Brendon. So what about his height. look at Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.

Good point.

Yes.
They got the right man for the job.

Then why did you post a photo of tubby Maguire? There are better photos:

And anyways, Tobey's characterisation was that of a big girl's blouse. People laughed in the theatres when he cried in Central Park in SM3. It was embarrassing.

Watch The Nines or Chaos Theory. The Nines in particular. He is very, very under-rated actor.

the nines
Amityville [Good as a standalone movie]
Smokin' Aces
Definately, Maybe

the nines was great. which reynolds did youi prefer? 1,2,or 3?

Not sure really, they were all very different and very interesting characters. I think his most subtle performance was no.2, the TV show producer guy, can't remember his name. Truly brilliant performance.

And with Smoking Aces sure it's just a action movie, but Reynolds was the straight guy in that.

He was brilliant in Fireflies in the Garden too.

yes, my fav. was reynolds no. 2 [gavin is what you mean..i think..], then gary.

i'll have to checkout fireflies in the garden.

Ahh yea that's it. The first one was Gary, then Gavin, then Gabriel. Yea Gavin was my favourite.

Just a quick bump. For those of you who said "nah", have you changed your mind now that Reynolds is both Wade Wilson and Hal Jordan?

Heh, the people who said he'd drop Deadpool for Green Lantern weren't worth paying attention to anyway.
