Schoolkids of the coming age....

I didn't really touch a computer until college but I remember when it was a big deal when I use to do reports on a typewriter.

Man, thinking about it, things will be sooo much different with our kids/younger siblings than it was with those of us who have finished school. I graduated only five years ago [June 12, 2002--my 18th birthday, woot], but already things have changed so drastically. I mean, for example, people don't even pass notes anymore--it's all text messaging. No more Dewey Decimals, just electronic filing of the inventory and we work from there.

Anything else I'm missing? And how will it be different? Beneficial or no?

[This was an idea I had a while ago, but didn't decide to do it until the "What's after Emo?" thread.]

I remember when it was a big deal if you skipped school. Now I constantly see kids, in their school uniforms walking around at 11 am when its obvious they should be in school.

I hang out looking at high school girls too Phere.

Would you say that was the standard thing back then? Did every home have a computer like today?

It wasn't as pervasive as it is today, but a lot of people had them at home. And, at least in my city, all the schools had them and kids were actually made to use the things at least a little bit. To say that 1995 is when computers magically became available to kids, though, is what struck me as odd.

At any rate, with a kid on the way in June/July, I'm looking forward to giving him advantages that I never had when I was a kid.

Nobody knows how to discipline children anymore.

Wait, what?

Holy Hell :wow:
when did you go to school the 1920's?
I was using a computer in school when I was 7 and that was the early 90s.
my girlfriend is a primary school teacher and it scared me that not only does she not teach on a blackboard or even a white board but all her lessons are on some interactive screen bollocks

that's taking education waaaaaay too far.
We had those smart boards in secondary school and that was in the the early 2000's

Why on earth would they play consoles from before they were born when they have newer consoles that are marketed towards them? Why should they intentionally stick with outdated technology?

I like old game consoles as well as the new ones. Its still fun every once or twice a year to bust out the old SNES, Sega or PSone from the attic and play a little.

those interactive screen things are actually rather good...remember the days of waiting for the TV and VCR to come rolling down the hall so you could watch a 20 min video about hilter? that don;t happen anymore...they just show clips from youtube!

but it is a bit far for a primary school to have them...

cause they think that 2d games are terrible cause they're not flashy and ultra violent...they should be made to respect the evolution of gaming...i'd take my SNES, mario all stars and some donkey kong over halo any day

Don't have to tell me that. Still play my Mega Drive and N64. But some people here are shocked that kids today play newer consoles rather than older ones.

My family was never technologically savy. I got my first computer through my school.

I remember playing playstation 2 on the smart boards at school at lunch time. We had a Pro Evo tournament.

Where I am *SoCal, kids are having sex by the 7 and 8 grade

School kids today don't know how fun recess used to be. :csad:

Do they even let kids play dodgeball anymore? That was one of my favorite games in school, but someone always wound up getting hurt. I can see all the PC people running the schools these days putting a stop to it because it's "dangerous". Plus, it lets kids be rambunctious, especially boys and in today's schools if little boys aren't acting like perfectly good little girls (being quiet, doing their schoolwork, and not acting like little boys in general) then they seem to usually want to put them on Ritalin and limit their recess activity to keep them calm. :whatever:

Sad but true.

I'm not sure if they allow it anymore. I'm sure like you said, a few kids got hurt cried and instead of thoughening up by walking it off lol, their parents complained and the schools put a stop to it.

I was the small skinny kid growing up and an introvert. I would sometimes get hit in the face with the ball and never once cried. I don't like how so many PC followers are trying to make sensitive babies out of everyone.

Nope. No Dodgeball, no running... and they wonder why kids these days are fat.

That's not even ridiculous...that's flat out insane!!

Not even jogging/running??

What next? Taking PE out of middle school and high school!?

I think it has to do with fear of parents suing the school when their kids get injured while playing at recess. This is a 'sue-happy' country afterall. People get sued for the stupidest and pettiest things.
