Scream 5 in Development

What should we expect? Or what would we want to see next?
A lot of returning characters from 5 I imagine (maybe from 4 too). A change of setting? After two sequels in Woodsboro I think a new setting is a must. In Winter too, or under a storm.

Awesome news! Glad everyone is returning-- part of me was hoping Williamson might be more involved with the writing this time since he was brought on board after the script was done for this movie, but they have a good thing going and I'm happy he's still on as an executive producer. He genuinely seems to really be thrilled with what the the new creative team has done.

If they're going into production this summer, the script must already be pretty far along. Very exciting. After Scream 4 fizzling, I really wasn't sure we'd get to this point.

$107.4 million WW box office as of Feb 1 on a $24 million budget! I'd say a sequel is warranted :yay:

I love this series! So glad we're getting new installments...

I finally got around to watching this today after rewatching the previous films over the past couple of weeks (or watching for the first time in the case of 4).

As far as legacy sequels go, this was done pretty well and I'd probably rank it as the best Scream sequel, barely edging out Scream 2.

Seeing Dewey die was upsetting since he was probably the most likable character in the franchise but I get why they did it. I also should have seen the killer reveal coming since one was a psychotic child murderer in the first Hunger Games and the other was a Manson family member from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. :o

Even though Scream 6 is happening because this one was a success and Hollywood gonna Hollywood, I'd rather they had ended the franchise with this one. Probably an unpopular opinion. I'll still see it though, I have no reason not to since I keep going back to the Fast & Furious movies and those are even more off the rails.

I agree with you to some extent. But the genre and specially the Scream movies are built around horror and sequels. That's what they are. So having sequels make total sense, probably the only franchise that is bullet-proof (so far so good) to having sequels. And having a mystery killer/s in each one of them also set it apart from similar slashers. They really can't do no wrong if they keep the spirit of the films alive.

Oh, it's absolutely expected for there to be sequels...
it's just that we're kind of reaching the end of the line in the whole pattern of the killer(s) having connections to one of the original film's characters....Billy's mom in Scream 2, Sidney's brother in Scream 3, Sidney's cousin in Scream 4, Billy's daughter's boyfriend in Scream 5...we're approaching this territory:

I suppose they can change it up and give Sidney and Gale a much-needed break and continue with Sam as the main character. Some more creative kills would also help keep things fresh. They've showed practically every way you can stab or shoot someone to death, let's see some more creative stuff like the garage door in 1 or even the defibrillator in 4.

Scream is a bit of a soap opera, for sure. I can understand why that wears on people after a while, but admittedly I have a lot of fun with it. The narrative connective tissue of the films and the character journeys is one of the things that distinguishes the series for me. It's a slasher series that you can emotionally invest in.

Forgot to mention. The song from the end credits is great. It had such a familiar 90s/early 00s feel for me and sent me home with some warm 'n fuzzies.

Still so happy this movie exists and the franchise is back.

Scream 2022 is about to surpass the total worldwide box office gross of Halloween Kills, all while Omicron was raging and some movie theaters in Canada and other countries were shut down early in its run. That is impressive and not what I thought would happen. Hard not to imagine how much farther Scream could have gone under better circumstances (pre or post-Omicron), or with a better release date.

It has essentially doubled the domestic gross of Scream 4 which was released in a pre-pandemic world, and topped Scream 4’s worldwide gross by a wide margin.

(Jumping into this thread superquick because I haven't seen the movie yet and still avoiding spoilers)-- Really glad to hear this is doing well and was well received, because it seriously received NO promotion here in Australia. I remember one ****ty TV spot-- not even that-- that was just one shot of Dewy walking down a hall... and that's it. Nothing else. Didn't even replay the previous movies on TV in the leadup like they do for every other franchise.

Anyway. Just wanted to vent about how weird I found it.

Woah, is this out on digital already?? Damn, I remember a time when the home release made me wanna watch the movie again because it had been so long since the theaters

Not out yet but coming soon. Very glad they didn’t buckle under pressure and decided to give Scream an exclusive theatrical run.

Yes for sure. The dual release of Halloween Kills killed that film a little bit (no pun intended). It was a poor sequel too, so there's that.

I mean, Scream 2022 had better marketing, didn't have a simultaneous streaming day of release, and was a better film overall. But I'm glad it's doing incredibly well because it'll help other studios hopefully double down on revisiting some of these slasher classics.

That's the most puzzling thing about it to me. Scream 4 didn't make much of an impact at all when it came out so Scream 5 doing as well as it has is really surprising. I guess nostalgia for '90s properties hadn't really kicked in yet back in 2011 compared to how it's grown since then.

Yep fellow Aussie here and I totally agree. Nobody I know has seen the movie or even knew there was a new scream movie coming out (until I wouldn’t shut up talking about it lol) I wish they marketed it more here because it was really a great movie, but so glad to see it doing so well worldwide!

I thought this was a good enough entrance into the Scream franchise.
Did anybody else think too much of the new blood survived though?

No way... we need that. The OGs can't keep coming back after 4, let alone after 5.

Scream 4 f'ed that up, concerning the new class didn't make it out.
