The Walking Dead Season 7, Episode 1 "The Day Will Come When You Won't Be" Discussion Thread

I wonder if the show will actually go through with Negan becoming more of an antihero and even an uneasy ally with Rick's group.

Maybe but...
I think Rick will ultimately get his revenge and use that axe to take Negan's head. Slowly.

[BLACKOUT]if they go comic book accurate then he'll take negan prisoner, not kill him (at first I guess)[/BLACKOUT]

The more I think about it, the more the choice to kill Glenn does not sit well with me.

In the grand scheme of things, Glenn had to die. As did Abe. Despite changes here and there, this is a fairly loyal adaptation of the comics. Glenn and Abraham's deaths are catalysts for the development of other characters. For example, it is Glenn's death that serves as a catalyst for Maggie taking more of a leadership role, ascending to leadership of the Hilltop, etc. Both had to die.

What is rubbing me the wrong way is the cheap tactics these writers use. According to Gimple and Kirkman, they decided two years ago that Neagan would kill Glenn and Abe. So let's rewind about a year ago. Why do the fakeout Glenn death? It kind of takes the punch out of Glenn dying now. Maggie has already gone through the arc of processing Glenn's death, coming to terms with it, etc. Now what? We watch her do that again? The writers used a fakeout death to build dramatic tension and give Maggie a dramatic arc that they had already known she would have later on. It just feels like poor planning.

I do hope that, at least as far as the show goes, Negan is around for awhile. I know there are many who will be out for blood and hope that Rick kills him, but part of me hopes that Rick doesn't, a. to show that, despite how much he's fallen into that dark place, what separates Rick from Negan.

And b.
keeping Negan alive in the comic has been beneficial to the survivors at several points and even now, he's still entertaining as he was in his introduction.

The episode pissed me off more than anything. If I was one of them on my knees, we would have all died because I wouldn't have been able to sit though all of that. I'd lunge for the nearest machine gun I could find and would just start spinning and spraying. Sorry, we'd all die but there is no chance the rage I felt would have been contained.

It was a nice[BLACKOUT] twist from the comics on the arm angle [/BLACKOUT]but after showing [BLACKOUT]Glenn[/BLACKOUT], did they really need to go soft there? My wife was truly disturbed. I was just pissed off.

Soft how? That dream sequence? If so, I do think that was very heavy handed. [BLACKOUT] We got all we needed from the tragedy just from Rick and Maggie alone, not to mention everyone else around them.[/BLACKOUT]

The dream of everyone eating together at the end was kind of cheesy. It's like, we get it.

The show is always cheesy, heavy-handed, poorly structured and poorly planned. Those complaints describe the entire series. It's not a good show and yet I watch.

:funny:

I really don't think The Walking Dead is a "great" show or anything. It's entertaining though ... And it's especially fun to watch with other people. Even the stupid stuff is fun to react to when you're watching it with other people.

Just seen it, and Wow.
The big death was so gruesome I couldn't even look at the screen tbh.
Curious to see what happens next

It is a fun show to watch and yell at. Obviously I dig something about the show or I wouldn't continue to watch. I do like some of the actors and characters when they are written well.

No, no, going soft as in [BLACKOUT]stopping Rick before taking Carl's arm.[/BLACKOUT]

I'm gonna get laughs for this, but: I sincerely believe this show is the work of the devil. You have one less viewer, AMC.

I like the survival aspect, I like the characters, the suspense, and the plot twists of this show, but over the years, time and time again, I've been bothered by the cruelty. Rick mercilessly axing Gareth in the Church, Carol killing a little girl, Rick coming into Alexandria and basically killing an entire family. Maggie cruelly beating a woman's head in with the butt of a gun, Carol setting a group of men on fire, And the group killing people unprovoked in exchange for food.

Rick degraded from the moral fiber of the group in the first few seasons and turned into a bloodthirsty killer, no different than Negan.

I mean the whole cliffhanger was basically 'who gets a gruesome death?' And the masses waited in anticipation for it, thirsty for some bloodshed. Some people in this very thread praising that the writers had 'balls' to be as graphic as they could. This show brings out a love for violence from its viewers.

Torture porn. This was nothing more than a snuff film.

I hear you CJ and I see where you are coming from. I already know I've become desensitized.

I never thought I would watch TWD on a continuous basis at all...but the writing and drama is some of the best TV I've seen...but at what cost?

If the show was starting to affect your spirit, good for you. We all should be a little bit more particular about what we let our minds absorb....what you put in, comes out...

I’m still trying to process the way I felt about this episode. What a depressing season premiere, which felt more like a prolonged epilogue of the Season 6 finale, imo. It was rough seeing Rick and Co. at their lowest point.

RIP Abe and Glenn. They will be missed. It was sickening, grotesque, and ruthless the way Negan took them both out. It was tragic b/c both characters found a purpose to live and wanted to start their own family. And Negan took that from them. Also didn't notice that Abe threw a peace sign at Sasha right after he was chosen.

Negan’s attempts to eventually break Rick was disturbing. Having Rick fetch his (meaning Negan’s now) hatchet in the middle of the fog full of walkers, then scaring Rick into chopping off Carl’s left hand (which thankfully didn't happen) was excruciating to watch. It really bothered me seeing Rick humiliated like that. I know that was the point, but upsetting to watch.

Should be an interesting journey seeing the group overcome Negan’s reign and the aftermath of Abe and Glenn’s death. For me Season 7 actually started after Negan and the rest of the Saviors left while Rick and co. face the aftermath of Abe and Glenn’s death. Looking forward to next week's episode with “The Kingdom“, which hopefully isn't as depressing.

I don't think Rick will kill him.
I go back to Negan's threats to Rick when he's telling Rick to cut off Carl's arm. That he'll kill all of them, plus everyone in Alexandria, but he'd keep Rick alive for a few years so he could suffer.
Part of me hopes Rick does just that to him. It would also be more in line with the comics.

You folks are adorable wanting Negan dead already. He saved the comic, will likely do exactly the same on the show. I want him to go where he went in the comics.

Whisperers...

So did anyone else notice
The guy taking the polaroids behind Rick when the Saviors are leaving
?

Wait, they stuck with the whole funeral motif throughout Talking Dead. Lord, it's like some AMC exec thought "Talking Dead is already tacky and self-important but how can we make it MORE tacky and self-important while also upping the *****ebaggery of Chris Hardwick?"

Thanks, nice to hear someone who shares my opinion. :yay:

Wow, what an intense episode. Probably the best episode of the Walking dead franchise.

At first I was a little annoyed when I thought Abraham alone would bite the bullet, because Glenn would've been the more emotional as well as the more narratively correct choice. Then Glenn got whacked. I was glad Carl didn't get his arm chopped off as the poor kid was already missing an eye there had been enough bloodshed that episode.

Negan's up there with Joffrey as the nastiest villain ever seen on TV. The way he murdered his victims and humiliated Rick was agonizing to watch.

People....put the deaths in spoiler tags.....this hasn't aired everywhere yet and not everyone saw it last night.

When Rick was hanging on the bridge walker, and they showed the walkers on the bottom that were trying to get him, was there a zombie that resembled Lucio Fulci's zombie from the famous cover of that zombie with that spider (or whatever it is) coming out of his eye and crooked teeth? Did anyone else see that, or was it just me?

I know Greg Nicotero likes to reference or put easter eggs from previous movies into TWD. Like Flyboy zombie from Dawn of the Dead, Bub and Dr Tongue from Day of the Dead,
