The Walking Dead Season 7 Episode 11 "Hostiles and Calamities" Discussion Thread

No way Eugene converted

Completely, no way. But I am glad they went with someone joining the Saviors, and it makes sense for it to be Eugene. We know he has built up some courage, but I think he also realizes that he is sort of in a difficult place. I'm sure they are leading up to Dwight and Eugene helping to create a rift in the Saviors.

Pretty good episode, even if it only focused on Eugene and Dwight. And it looks to be a Richonne episode next week, so that could be fun.

I really liked this episode. I think Eugene might be my favorite character. Cravenly toadying up to the scary man in power would so be me in the apocalypse. And then he turned HBIC over the cold medicine. Now we need more tension between him and his nemeses, Negan's wives.

The return of Easy Street. :funny:

The only parts I didn't like were the ones involving Dwight. Why did Negan allow him to chase Sherry down on his own? And why was Dwight less expendable than the doctor? It was stupid.

Might be one of the most boring episodes they've done. meh.

What an out of character decision. Abraham was like his big brother and he was insensely loyal to him. And he has clearly always been in love with Rosita. I think everybody recognized it too.

So to have Eugene happily buddy up with the man who he watched bash Abraham's head to pieces and who beat up and cut Rosita's face was really out of character. He could have been swayed over time. But to have him instantly join like that. I don't buy it.

This was a pretty good follow up to “The Cell” and “Sing Me A Song”. Interesting how much Eugene’s experience at the sanctuary contrasted to Daryl’s. While Daryl was treated more as a prisoner Eugene was (to my surprise) treated as an equal by the Saviors. Probably b/c Daryl was seen more as a threat and Eugene as more of an asset. Eugene nodding to “Easy Street” was priceless. So once again in order for Eugene to survive he lies his way out situations. The callbacks to Season 4b and 5a with him being a scientist on the “Human Genome Project” and the molded metal head walker from “Twice As Far” at the bullet manufacturing shop came in handy (particularly when Eugene suggested to Negan to mold metal on the fence walkers’ head so their skull and brains were protected ). I just hope him lying again doesn’t bite him in the butt again. After taking out Dr. Carson Negan promoted Eugene as their sole doctor. Uh oh!

I don’t believe Eugene’s converted to Team Negan. He’s only playing Negan and the Saviors until he comes up with a solution to get out of there alive b/c he‘s on his own atm. The question is how long can he keep lying before Negan/Saviors find out? Sure this is probably the most comfortable he’s been since before the apocalypse, but still. Negan killed Abe and Glenn (two people/friends that kept him alive). So I doubt he’ll betray Rick and Co. after keeping him alive, getting him to Washington, and all they‘ve been through. They taught him how to be brave and less of a coward. I’m predicting he’ll form an alliance with Dwight to take out Negan. We’ll see but I believe Eugene’s got something up his sleeve. The Saviors are underestimating him.

I thought that was cold how Dwight framed Dr. Carson into being the one who set Daryl free with the key and note. Just like Eugene he’s got something up his sleeve as well. I still don’t know what to think of Dwight as a character. He‘s very complex.

So Sherry wrote the note and left Daryl the key to escape. It’s funny b/c during that moment in “Sing Me A Song” the footsteps sounded heavy like someone wearing boots. I guess that was a misdirection to have viewers guessing Dwight or Jesus, but whatever .

Next weeks episode looks Richonne centric with a side plot of Rosita being reckless once again.

He didn't join them. It's all a façade until he sees a legitimate opportunity to escape or hurt the Saviors. Eugene isn't cut from the same unbreakable cloth of Daryl or Michonne, but he can think his way around a situation. Don't be shocked if he's instrumental in turning the tide against Negan from within.

Damn, Dwight set up the Doc for the fall

Which is odd considering in the comics...
Dwight betrays Negan and works as a mole for Rick and the others.

He told Negan the same lie he told Abraham. He's going to use it to get closer and try something. Eugene is very good at using people to get what he needs.

I'm curious whether that's still happening, though even if Dwight does
switch sides
he still set up Carson to die. That's...not right.

They always have a slow episode on Oscar night. I think they plan for it because they know they're gonna take a ratings hit.

Yeah. I fell asleep about half way through. I just don't care for Negan or Dwight. The wives are annoying, Eugene is probably my least favorite character, and the lack of my major faves, (Michonne, Rick, Daryl and Carol) really made this episode torture to go through.

Im hoping this is the case, it would make me look at Eugene completely differently.

Wasn't the best opportunity the one that was just presented to him by Negan's wives? They'd know his routine better than anyone, and would be the closest to him.

That's assuming Eugene believes 1) that the wives' scheme isn't a setup, 2) that they wouldn't somehow screw it up, and 3) that the other Saviors wouldn't recognize Negan's death as being a poisoning and seek out who was responsible. I'm guessing he had doubts on at least one of those scores.

I'm wondering it Negan isn't using his harem to test Eugene. It seemed really convenient for them to place their trust in someone whom they had just met. I'm sure Negan knows that Eugene would like to kill him, but if he's assured that Eugene is too scared to act, that may be all Negan needs to feel like Eugene is part of the group.
