Seven Dead in Drive-By Shooting Near UC Santa Barbara

I've seen that acronym several times now. What the hell is the MRA?

Men's Rights Activists.

Also:

Incel - involuntary celibate
Wizard - a male virgin past the normal age of losing virginity
Normal - How Wizards refer to other men

Oddly enough, I wasn't aware there was even a Men's Rights movement.

I think it started over frustration over how child support and alimony are treated by the justice system.

It then metastasized into an umbrella for various "grievances".

I'm kind of wondering, did this kid ever really try to talk to a female? It almost seems to me that this kid didn't even try and just automatically thought women didn't like him.

No, according to his manifesto at least. He figured that since he had nice clothes and a bmw they would just flock to him. There was one part where he described how he dressed up nice one day and in his head everyone's eyes would be glued to him. The way he described it was so ridiculous, it reminded me of the hallway dance scene in eastbound and down.

What's considered the normal age of losing virginity?

The Men's Rights Advocate. Apparently, men are a group of oppressed people. Women, darn them, don't want to hold to traditional gender roles, and they dare ask for such horrible things like decent pay, or to not be raped (as if rape actually exists).

Google. You might need to bleach your brain, aftewards, just a forewarning.

I'd say it varies. Socioeconomics play a big role.

I'd say 17 is the median age though. But you'd be surprised by how many people stay virgins until college (early 20's).

Another surprising fact is how few sex partners most people have in their lifetime. The average is about 5. Considering people start at 17... that isn't a whole lot.

I imagine that number is a lot higher in certain countries. Or significantly lower in others. And this is strictly straight people.

Mens rights, oy.

Now all the need is a WCMRA for the poor oppressed White Christian Men who are the oppressed in the USA.

Oh, there's many posts about that, or at least there's posts all about poor white poeple. Apparently the feminist movement is also anti-white.

It will take time but eventually experts will be able to build a full profile of the killer. What will be interesting is the autopsy - were there drugs in his system? A cocktail of drugs? And if so, how did they impact his judgement? But as studies and profiles have shown it takes more than that to actually create a killer since this was most definitely planned - not a spur of the moment killing spree.

This whole story has some many different aspects and brings up so many different issues, its crazy

You've got

Mental Illness, the limits of law enforcement, internet subcultures, the gun debate, Hollywood culture, misogyny, Political implications, college life, tragedy, and a theatrical killer who basically lets you inside his head through Youtube and manifestos.

What's even more ****ed up is that he apparently wanted, not sure if it was planned, to kill his stepmother and his little brother because they were getting more attention than he was.

His stepmom was on a French version of Real Housewives and his little brother was trying out for TV commercials, of course this would have made them more successful than him which he just couldn't handle.

With more and more details coming out about this kid and his manifesto; forget being a narcissistic psychopath, he just sounded like an absolute loser.

Oh god. The *****e chills I got reading that. These people need mental help.

According to the Durex polls, median age in the USA is between 16 and 17, for both males and females.

I was 19 and my first semester at college, but then I went crazy and had a lot of one-night stands or brief flings in my early to mid 20's. I've had about 35 to 40 sex partners. Not boasting, because I look back at that time and actually feel embarrassed for myself. I was trying to prove something or make up for lost time, but just acted like an ass and used people. I've been monogamous for three years now though.

As for the shooter and whether he had any female contact…. I hate to say this, but he's not (or was not) an ugly guy. If he acted normal, he probably would have had no trouble getting a girlfriend. Even if he was introverted and socially anxious, he would have been with a girl by his age. So I have to assume he was seriously off-putting socially. Like on a level even the worst trolls on this board would have a hard time achieving.

In my day, it was called N.O. M.A'A.M.

In all seriousness, I live in increasing fear that someone I love will die of gun violence, and there isn't anything to do to stop it. It seems like something like this happens at least once a month now.

Well, he was told off on other message boards, like bodybuilding.com, a site I used to hang out on. They've actually deleted every single one of his posts and handed them over to the authorities.

A great article on everyday misogyny, and how men don't always observe it. http://www.slate.com/articles/double_x/doublex/2014/05/_yesallwomen_in_the_wake_of_elliot_rodger_why_it_s_so_hard_for_men_to_recognize.html

The best quote of the story is this one:

Women who have experienced this can recognize that placating these men is a rational choice, a form of self-defense to protect against setting off an aggressor. But to male bystanders, it often looks like a warm welcome, and that helps to shift blame in the public eye from the harasser and onto his target, who’s failed to respond with the type of masculine bravado that men more easily recognize. Two weeks before the murders, Louis C.K.—who has always recognized pervasive male violence against women in his stand-up—spelled out how this works in an episode of Louie, where he recalls watching a man and a woman walking together on a date. “He goes to kiss her, and she does an amazing thing that women somehow learn how to do—she hugged him very warmly. Men think this is affection, but what this is is a boxing maneuver.” Women “are better at rejecting us than we are,” C.K. said. “They have the skills to reject men in the way that we can then not kill them.”
