Seven Dead in Drive-By Shooting Near UC Santa Barbara

As for the shooter and whether he had any female contact…. I hate to say this, but he's not (or was not) an ugly guy. If he acted normal, he probably would have had no trouble getting a girlfriend. Even if he was introverted and socially anxious, he would have been with a girl by his age. So I have to assume he was seriously off-putting socially. Like on a level even the worst trolls on this board would have a hard time achieving.
Or if not sex or a date, at least TALKED to a woman. Even the shyest of guys have had a conversation with a hot woman (even by complete accident) by the time they're 22.

I'm sure the guy probably had a couple girls who crushed on him, but in his mind, they weren't up to his standards so he probably dismissed them. The guy was just a puke really, when it all comes down to it.

He seemed to me, be to on a one way track toward some type of criminality or violent action no matter what, and maybe that is the result of a form of mental illness. I dunno know, but its sad that so many lives have been damaged due to this guy. Its also sad that in death he's now getting the attention he craved for in life.

I don't see this guy as some garden variety narcissist or "puke". We're talking about a guy who quit a class because he researched a hot girl in it and discovered she already had a boyfriend. He also tossed coffee on women he didn't even know. Sounds to me like this guy had a full-blown mental illness.

I think everyone is making too much of his virginity as a driving force behind his killing, which is playing into the killer's own self-image and the shallow media culture in which he lived. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he actually had one or more nasty, paid back-alley encounters in his life, that were too gross and humiliating for him to even admit to in his depraved writing.

The fact is A) he hated women, B) he hated other men, C) he hated himself and anybody who reminded him of himself, and D) he hated the society that provided the context for him to be born into it. These conditions would still exist even if he was nailing Kate Upton.

I was 19 and my first semester at college, but then I went crazy and had a lot of one-night stands or brief flings in my early to mid 20's. I've had about 35 to 40 sex partners. Not boasting, because I look back at that time and actually feel embarrassed for myself. I was trying to prove something or make up for lost time, but just acted like an ass and used people. I've been monogamous for three years now though.

I was thinking this as well. Not only was he decently good looking, but he came from a rich and famous family. To be that off-putting to the opposite sex is truly incredible. I agree with RachelDawes, he probably had a mental illness and it completely crippled any social skills that he might have had otherwise.

sounds more to me like a full-blown character disorder.

No, according to his manifesto at least. He figured that since he had nice clothes and a bmw they would just flock to him. There was one part where he described how he dressed up nice one day and in his head everyone's eyes would be glued to him. The way he described it was so ridiculous, it reminded me of the hallway dance scene in eastbound and down.

that's who this guy reminds me of. he's Kenny Powers without the talent and balls.

I don't really think that guns are the problem here. The first murders weren't committed with a gun. That, more than anything else, says a lot about the mindset of this guy. He wanted to kill, and he wanted his victims to suffer..

that's one explanation. but i can think of another reason to not use the gun on his roommates. guns are loud. his rampage would have ended pretty quick if he had used a gun in that dorm room. that was a formality. he wanted to make it to the sorority.

He's the typical, "I know everything and it's everyone's fault but mine," type of person.

I recently read about the part in his manifesto where he was furious with his father for making a documentary about God because it didn't make money and ended up bankrupting the family to produce.

“If only my failure of a father had made better decisions with his directing career instead wasting his money on that stupid documentary,” he wrote.

He clearly thinks he knows more than anyone and is quick to criticize and judge things he so obviously knows nothing about.

At one moment I pictured what my life in high school would be like, based on how things have been for me in middle school. It was not a bright picture. I didn’t want to have to deal with the cruelty of girls in high school, and I imagined that it would be much worse than anything I’ve ever experienced. I begged my parents to send me to Crespi Carmelite High School, a catholic all-boys school.

Father took me there for a tour, and it didn’t look so bad. It was a very prestigious private school. At least I wouldn’t have to deal with any fear of girls there. We submitted an application. A few weeks later I received the news that I had been accepted to Crespi.
Looks like he had extreme anxiety around girls at a young age. So much so he went to a all-boy school. Ironically where he got bullied like crazy.

Astaire said Elliot had not been diagnosed with Asperger’s but the family suspected he was on the spectrum, and had been in therapy for years. He said he knew of no other mental illnesses, but Elliot truly had no friends, as he said in his videos and writings.

Astaire said Elliot was incredibly shy, spoke haltingly and rarely looked people in the eye. “He was fundamentally withdrawn,” he said. “The guy on the video was much more confident. That is a guy I never met.”

Though RESPONDENT claims in her Court documents that our son, Elliot, “is a high functioning autistic child”, I was not involved in any prior evaluation of Elliot. RESPONDENT did not inform me about any evaluation of Elliot. This disturbed me greatly.

indicates he did not have Aspergy.

Meanwhile, despite AFTER THE FACT, his former principle thinks so. The incorrect diagnoses by certain people led to incorrect and inappropriate treatment. See here:
Smith, the former Independence High School principal, first came into contact with Rodger when she worked as a Los Angeles Unified School District behavioral specialist and Rodger was attending Taft High School in Woodland Hills. Smith helped Rodger — who was identified as a child with Asperger’s syndrome and who received support in the school district for it — get into a smaller school after an incident in which he suddenly became “socially frozen” in the hallway shortly after starting at the charter school in Woodland Hills, she said.
If he was treated for social anxiety and his neurosis, things would probably be different now. It's too bad no one will be held accountable for this **** up.

I think it's a knee jerk response to assume every violent person is mentally ill.

Being a short tempered, misogynistic, narcissist might be more "normal" than most people are willing to admit.

This might be a failure of American values rather than a failure of our mental healthcare system.

He read like a white knight in his approach.

He was all angry when his "gentlemen" approach didn't work. While the badboys or muscular jocks were drowning in girls. He was mad at the guys pulling this off, and mad at the girls for going for it. So typical white knight.

Did you watch any of the videos or read parts of his manifesto? The guy was clearly mentally ill.

I have relatives who I suspect are on the autism spectrum. They are not bothered by being socially awkward because their parents put so much emphasis on academics. They find their way around any anxiety through the academics.

I always thought that people with autism can't read social cues, so they wouldn't know if they were making people uncomfortable. They just do their thing.

Going through life not knowing if you're going to be randomly gunned down in an otherwise safe area by someone not even angry at you personally is a horrible way to live.

And it doesn't happen often enough for it to be normal. It's an epidemic, but still not normal. Road rage is "normal," shooting random people is not normal.

He wasn't a white knight. He didn't do crap - didn't ask any women out, didn't even TALK to women. He had no one to blame but himself for his loneliness. He was the equivalent of a housefly on the wall that nobody sees.

No one is disputing he didn't take any responsibility or action.

I am pointing out his mentality. The way he defined self worth by female approval/validation. You have to put girls on a pretty high pedestal to think this way. That is so white knight'ish

What do you think of these hoax theories?

I'd rather this would be a staged event, than have all those poor kids die for real :(

Why would it be faked? What would be the overall point in it having been so?

Conspiracy theorist nuts should only be pointed at and laughed at. Taking those idiots seriously is the only sad reason why they exist.

So his parents are saying they're going to dedicate the rest of their lives to fighting for mental illness related issues.

I don't think mental illness is to blame here, but I can understand them referring to mental illness as both a coping mechanism and legal strategy.

The media needs to stop giving this guy some much coverage and give more respect to the victims. All this week they been doing features on him, talking about his plans and backstory etc. This is the type of stuff he wanted ATTENTION and exposure and sadly, this will motivate more mentally ill people to go out and kill innocent people to get exposure just because they are mad at the world for whatever reason.

You can't be a white knight and a misogynist at the same time.

This guy gave up on the white knight concept to become the ultimate bad boy.

And where do you get the idea that only white knights seek validation through sex? Plenty of non-white knights do the same thing.
