seven in running for 2007 visual effects oscar.

Yes the city was great and they did a fantastic job on it. But the rest of the CGI was a mess

"But" is irrelevant. The visual effects Oscar is judged based on something exceptional within the movie, not the entire movie and definitely not the weakest points. :cwink:

Which is why they gave the Oscar to "Spider-Man 2" for the train sequence and not because the two helicopters during the end swinging scene looked like toys.

that scene was terrific, no doubt.

the rest of the fx, especially the cgi human faces/digital stunt-doubles were terrible... and especially considering the budget of the movie, and the fact that movies like the matrix sequels and blade II and many others did the whole digital stunt-double thing just as good years before it. everything else in spider-man 3 was on par (at best) with spider-man 2. that's why it didn't get the nod.

and that's why i don't think at world's end should get the nomination... it didn't do anything we hadn't seen in dead man's chest, and it was a pretty crappy movie to boot.

I see your point, and I would have to agree with you on Pirates 3's nod. I think that Transformers should definately walk away with the little golden naked guy.

I was not impressed by the FX in Revolutions at all and they didn't save that poor ass movie.

To me FX have to work in conjunction with the movie, and even if it has the best FX, if the movie sucks it doesn't deserve a nod.
Well, the visual effects did'nt save PoTc 3 from being a crappy movie now did it...Nor Spiderman 3..
I will agree visual effects are'nt just about the special effects or CGI used. Its how it was used, was it needed, does it flow with the movie. Does it make the movie worse or better.

300: It was visually entertaining. The cut scenes, the scenery, the coloring of the film was very good. Though I think the 'matrix' style effects will hurt it for this voting..

PoTC3: Though I disliked this movie, the visual effects were very solid. The sceneries were very well done, the CGI stuff looked like it belonged, everything blended in with its surroundings..

Bourne Ultimatum: Though this movie did'nt have the CGI like the others it was still visually good. This movie proves u don't have to throw in CGI robots,or matrix illusions to make a visually good movie..

Transformers: Not sure what to say? IMO this movie was way overrated in every department. However for this award its all about visuals. They were well done overall. I will give the CGI props on the auto/deceptacons,but overall visually the movie was'nt on par as I think it could of been..I don't think visually it was appealling or worthy of winning. However; I dont get a vote, but I will assume this one will win?

Evan Almighty: Not sure how this got thrown in the mix? Not even gonna comment on this...
*Spiderman3,not sure how this got left off,but I don't think it would of win anyways.

I am Legend: This ones hard to say. Visually it looked solid, but I don't think enough to win the award. The whole deserted city was very good, though complaints on the Dark Seekers came to forfront.

Who will win: Transformers

Who should win: 300

*Runner up: Bourne Ultimatum(showed ppl you don't need a ****load of CGI to be visually good movie)

Once again people have mistaken fancy CG as the only form of special FX.

Once again people have mistaken fancy CG as the only form of special FX.

CG at its finest point are the best kind of special effects in this day and age. See "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, "Jurassic Park", and even the original "Star Wars" trilogy for reference.

Once again people have mistaken fancy CG as the only form of special FX.

And once again you have mistaken Transformers as a movie with only fancy CG and nothing more. Transformers had everything Bourne has plus much, much more.

Once again people have mistaken fancy CG as the only form of special FX.

But it's also fancy CG that made people BELIEVE...and that says a lot. Basically the success of the entire film hinged on that believability, and it worked.

For the ignorant fools:

-Special FX go beyond CG. The Bourne Ultimatum was a remarkable achievement for live action practical FX.

-Instead of bashing it, we should be celebrating movies that take the action movie genre back down to earth with all the CG garbage that gets shoved down audiences throats.

-Nothing in The Bourne Ultimatum looked fake. Watch the commentary and there were many things that never looked like FX that were as well.

OH NOEZ FANCY CGI ROBOTZ! NO AWARD FOR YOU!

The Bourne Ultimatum should be nominated for best picture.

HA!!

remarkable achievement...pfft

Live free or Die Hard beats bourne on the practical stuff too anyday.

VileOne, just keep your elitism and bias to yourself. I mean, really. You have your own opinion, and nobody was out to change your opinion. Nobody asked for your remarks.

We are in an open forum. I will give my remarks where I see fit.

I don't appreciate the unjustified bashing for Ultimatum. Die Hard 4 looked ridiculous and overblown to me.

You also called some in here "ignorant fools" and joked some that thought Transformers should win with the "OMGZ!" stuff. Most are bashing the film because:

a) They feel that Transformers is more worthy of the award because there is just so much more special effects (CGI and practical) in it than in Ultimatum.
b) Just because you think Ultimatum should be the winner doesn't mean everybody will, man. You give remarks like that, and you're going to get flack for it.

I'm not on anybody's side.

I never said it should be a winner, I said it's totally legit for it to be nominated.

My joke was that people thought because Ultimatum didn't have any big fancy CGI robots it's not worthy of a nomination. I disagree. You misinterpreted my joke.

All the power to Transformers and winning this award.

But just so you know, the general moviegoing public doesn't vote for these awards. The voters are members of the academy AND the peers. That means people that work on visual FX will have say in who wins best visual FX.

My bad with the wanting it to win part and misinterpreting the joke, and yep on the last part. I think ILM will have another win from either Pirates or Transformers.

WTF?!
Why is The Bourne Ultimatum in this category? I didn't even know it had any special effects that would qualify it.
I say 300 should win.

Its really disappointing that SP3 is no longer contention. I'm hoping 300 wins, the VFX is amazing in that movie.

IMO, Pirates did the best job of making the effects look organic and not like CGI.

I Am Legend, while having a really neat looking desolated New York City, had some of the worst CGI creatures I've ever seen in a theatrical film. They were just terrible.

This thread is starting to get repetitive.

I just watched Evan Almighty...I can definitely understand why it was being considered for the Oscar.
