"Shadow and Bone" series in the works from Netflix

was more impressed by the teaser - looks like a typical netflix adaption.

I don't know much about this outside of the trailers I have seen, but it looks like fun to me. It definitely has that weird black on black aesthetic of the "edgy" YA genre, but it has enough life to it for me as well.

Looks cool. I like that it's a fantasy adventure that's not in a "medieval" setting.

With this releasing in about a week and a half, how do those of us participating want to handle discussion of episodes and spoilers? I'm assuming this will be a typical netflix "dump" where all episodes of the season drop on the 23rd, and not all of us will be watching at the same pace. For example, I already know I'm probably only going to be doing a couple episodes a week - it'll become mine and my sister's "friday watch" show that we watch together when she comes over for dinner (that Falcon and the Winter Soldier is currently occupying, and WandaVision occupied before that). Do we want to say just always use spoiler tags in this thread (and/or maybe start a second thread where no spoiler tags are required (for those that binge it within the first day or two))? I'm open to whatever (even if that means I'll just stay away from this thread until I've seen the entire season ;) )

I think spoiler tags are good etiquette at least the first week

I’m probably going to check this out. I’m surprised this is getting decent reviews but not because I didn’t like what I saw from the trailers it’s just that YA adaptations can be mostly hit or miss. I never read the books but this show looks cool so yeah.

Show throws so many fictional proper names and characters, locations, lore, and other terminology at you that I’m lost on the first episode. And I say this as someone who reads a lot of fantasy fiction and plays video games and watches fantasy tv shows. It’s like being a child thrown into the deep end of the pool and being told to swim. This is just a warning especially to those of us who haven’t read the books already. Hopefully it gets better past this exposition overload where a glossary is needed.

Yeah, I can see that

If any non readers do need a reference or maps or anything to help with names/locations/how things are positioned in the world (or, at least, roughly positioned, as I haven't started watching yet I don't know what changes might have been made), there is the grishaverse fan wiki that's pretty comprehensive, here's their locations page: TheGrishaVerse Fandom Wiki: Locations of course I do recommend caution since the wiki will obviously have book spoilers especially if you go to specific character pages

So I have never read the books and I had no idea what this show was about, but I love Ben Barnes and I wanted to check it out. After episode 4, so far, I love the Crows, the Darkling is chilling and you get that evil vibe, which I dig, and Alina annoys me. I don't know what it is, but a woman denying her true power in favour of a childhood friendship is infuriating beyond belief. Is she like this in the books?

I'm liking the show, but I'm not interested in this Alina/Mal friendship thing at all. Maybe it's a lack of sentiment on my part, but I don't feel the all encompassing love between them that would cause Mal to go on a journey for a mythical creature and get his friends killed and for Alina to deny her power until Mal gets there and tells her what to do. I know at the end of episode 4 she grows into her own, but damn it was annoying up to this point. The childhood flashbacks are overdone. I don't care about their meadow.

Rhetorical question: why do they not go around The Fold or cross it where it's not wide ?
I may have missed the explanation.
Currently at EP4.

Had no idea about the books, watched the 2st episode and sort of enjoying it, honestly it kind of reminds me of a live Avatar(TLA/LOK) series, or something that could exist in the same universe.

Loved the first episode. Haven't read the books but still had a good idea of everything going on. There is exposition, for sure, but they did a good job of making it flow and didn't get too bogged down by it. Maybe they should have slowed it down more as I can understand why it could be confusing in general.

But overall I was just really impressed by the interesting world, how quickly yet effectively drawn the characters are, and the quality of the storytelling and production. When they enter the Fold and the sequence in it--man, it felt cinematic in a way that I haven't seen in too many TV shows recently. Great stuff.

They explained it a couple times in the first episode. Basically it extends so far north and south that it takes forever to go around and on one end there are major mountains and on the other end a hostile territory.

Just finished it (I know I said I was going to do an episode or 2 a week as the "friday show" for me and my sister, but after watching the first episode last night, when she left to go home, she went ahead and told me to go ahead and plow through it if I wanted to and she'd do the same today). I really really liked it and am anxious for season 2. Now, as I noted I think earlier in this thread, I didn't go into this having done a re-read or anything and so finer book details aren't fresh in my mind/are about a year or two "old". Loved loved loved Ben Barnes as Kirigan - but I went into it pretty much knowing I would love him and I wasn't disappointed at all. Loved loved loved the Crow crew and think they got perfect casting on them and, even though they didn't appear in the Grisha trilogy, I'm actually pretty okay with how they melded them into the story and set things up to match up with how we meet them when the Six of Crows storyline comes around.

I'm wondering if they'll focus on an 'amplifier a season' kind of like the books so...

the Sea Whip will be season 2 and the Firebird season 3?

Which could mean the Six of Crows actual storyline might not happen until much later...not that we won't see them, but it will probably still be back story/pre Six of Crows material.

I loved seeing the backstory between Nina and Matthias (I think in the Six of Crows duology we're only told about how they met well after the fact)

Anywho, those are just some initial thoughts. I might do another rewatch through the weekend here (taking Monday off as a personal day from work - just need to destress - so I'll have the time)

Just finished episode 5 and so good! I like that Alina has taken control over her life. I still don't care for Mal at all and I think she's better off finding her own way. Of course the Darkling is an evil guy, but it's still very intriguing. The Crows are my favourite still.

I'm a sucker for fantasy stuff anyways, but I really did enjoy this series and hopefully it does get more seasons. I know nothing about the source material either and it was kind of hard to understand what was going on at first, but once all the parts started coming into place it got much better for me.

So much of the fantastical influence in this reminded me of a live action Avatar: The Last Airbender which was really dope and helps that most of the characters are pretty interesting in their own ways.

Also, special shout out to Ben Barnes who I always thought was a talented actor and has never been more charismatic and sinster than the villian role he played here.

I feel like the Mal problem is kind of there in the first book too, he does flesh out a bit more in the subsequent books so we’ll see how the next season(s) work with that

Just finished the season and I'm in love! The Nina/Matthias story had me shipping them like crazy. I'm a sucker for the enemies to lovers trope. I love that they're all on the same boat at the end. I love their powers and I love when they show them off. What kind of power would everyone here like? The Healer is obviously very useful, but personally, I like the dark so being a Darkling would be my pick.

I believe in the books that Jesper is a Geisha, correct? I wonder if they'll explore that in this series.

Edit: GRISHA. Not Geisha. Thank you @Silvermoon :funny:

*Grisha, not geisha :cwink: (assuming auto correct tripped it up for you)
