There's good reason why Middle-earth: Shadow of War has dropped the Mordor bit - it's got much bigger geographical plans. Speaking to OXM, Monolith Studios has talked about "massively increasing the scale of the game" to take in new areas.
Subscribe to Official Xbox Magazine now - in print or on digital from only £14
Michael de Plater, vice president of creative, explains: "one of the reasons it’s Shadow Of War and not just Mordor is that we’ve expanded beyond Mordor. So the Dark Lord is growing his armies, and his forces – led by the Witch-king – have come out of Mordor and attacked and assaulted the human city of Minas Ithil. They’ve conquered it and turned it into Minas Morgul, which is the tower of the Witch-king. That actually brings the front line of this war out beyond Mordor and all the way forward to the kingdom of Gondor."
Art director Phil Straub continues: "the first thing to recognise is that we aren’t just in Mordor. That’s a big, cool step up from the previous game." That means this time the game has "a fair amount of geological variety," says Straub. Although he's not giving too much away: "we can say that there are forests; we can say that there are snowy mountainous areas; we can say that there are other locations. I don’t want to divulge too much. But there is a greater variety."
Ultimately, according to de Plater, "we’ve really focused on just massively increasing the scale of the game, making something truly epic. And that applies to the story and the villains, but it also applies very much to the world itself."

I beat Shadow of Mordor yesterday, put in over 40 hours, and it was time well spent. Damn good game. Only have one trophy left before I get platinum, which is the White Rider trophy, I looked at the guides, looks frustrating.

Have to agree with that article. I am not that much into SoM, but the nemesis system is what keeps me on the game for hours on end when i do play it. It's so annoyingly addictive and designed so well.

I absolutely adored the Mad Max game, but can't deny the Nemesis system would have made the game even more enjoyable than it was.

So I got 100% in Shadow of Mordor, I thought getting that last trophy would be difficult, but I got it on my first try. Shadow of Mordor is now the third game I have platinum.

A very familiar sight.

Middle-Earth: Shadow of War, the follow-up to 2014's Shadow of Mordor was officially revealed to the world back in February, and today IGN got an exclusive look at one of the game's key sections, Minas Ithil. What's unique about the video is that we get a look how the game functions within an urban environment.

One thing that's immediately apparent is that Shadow of War looks exactly like Shadow of Mordor. So much so that if you took a screenshot of both and held them side by side, you might be hard-pressed to tell which is which. That said, there is far more to games than pure graphical fidelity, as Minas Ithil's cityscape represents a dramatic departure from the kinds of environments in Shadow of Mordor.
There also appears to be a lot more space to move around in, which (hopefully) will lend itself to authentically larger battles with more meaningful consequences.
This is the second major gameplay reveal that Shadow of War has gotten, as there's also a 16-minute gameplay demo which you can check out here. Middle-Earth: Shadow of War releases on PC, PS4, and Xbox One on August 25th, 2017.

What is going on with this game?! The more footage they release, the worse it looks. That first reveal footage looks poor, even compared to SOM. This is due to be released in 4 months! I loved the first game so much and I'm concerned about this.

Sweet, im pretty excited for the game.
Sadly the "old" Interrogation doesnt seem to be in the game.
I liked when he stabbed them in the face and then cut off their heads.

Hope we get more Footage soon, im curious on how big the game is and if they filled it well.
The first one felt a bit empty to me.

IGN release an article yesterday saying they'll be receiving news on SOW all month long.

Kinda disappointed with the footage. The graphics look exactly the same, and even worse in some spots than the previous one. Even the animation feels very choppy and the characters look like they're floating above the ground in some spots. I enjoyed the first game decently enough, and it'll be cool to visit some actual cities (small as they appear to be), but I'm kinda "meh" about this right now.

They're still using a heavily modified version of their proprietary LithTech engine. The same engine they've been using since the original FEAR. It's actually impressive how much they've been able to do with it, but yeah it's definitely showing its age.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War is expanding beyond Mordor for the sequel, and a recent IGN First video explores the creation of one the game’s most iconic cities.
The city of Minas Ithil is a massive human city which protagonist Talion must defend from a siege right at the game’s outset. The location is also present in the film series as the fortress Minas Morgul, which it becomes after falling to Sauron’s forces through a transformation that the game allows fans to experience first-hand.
The early Minas Ithil is reminiscent of the famous city of Minas Tirith, which the developers mention was a major inspiration for the design. There are many levels to the environment that players will be free to explore, with it serving as one of the key gameplay locations for the upcoming game.

IGN’s follow-up interview with the developers at Monolith Productions inquired about how the game fit into the official lore, specifically whether or not moving the fall of Minas Ithil in the timeline would cause issues.
“We try to be very true to the events as they’re known,” said Michael de Plater, Monolith’s vice president of creative. “In some ways, it’s almost historical fiction. And we’d already done that as well in Shadow of Mordor. The fall of the Black Gates and Talion’s initial death was also moved in terms of the timeline in order to accommodate that story.”
De Plater went on to explain that the developer strives to be as accurate as possible with the events of the lore and their connections to each other, but in order to tell certain stories in this timeline, things have to be slightly moved around.
“So the particular example that touches on our story, that we also get to explore a bit, is the notion of what happened to the king of Gondor, and why is Denethor the steward, and also what’s the political and military structure in Minas Ithil and how does that relate to Minas Tirith. Then we see the fall. So everything is touching on events that we know and things we’ve seen very accurately but we’ve sort of moved that story within this timeline.”
Middle-earth: Shadow of War is slated to launch August 22nd on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Be sure to follow EGM’s Shadow of War page to keep up with everything coming out about the game.

More details on the Ringwraiths of Middle-earth.

Last month we got a look at gameplay for Middle-earth: Shadow of War, and from that video, it's very apparent that the sequel will be much larger scale. It's set to feature dragons, Sauron himself, and the Nazgûl AKA Ringwraiths.
The Nazgûl are men who were corrupted and enslaved by Sauron after being given rings of power. In the Lord of the Rings trilogy, they hunted Frodo endlessly, as they are drawn to the power of the One Ring. In Shadow of War, they will play the role of bosses, each with a unique detail about them. In an interview with IGN, Monolith Vice President of Creative, Michael de Plater says:
"They are bosses. You are competing with them throughout Mordor and as you get in there and start to conquer Mordor and you’re facing them. Different weapons that relate to who they were historically. We’ve added specific gameplay to each of the individual Nazgûl in relation to their different boss fights as well. So whether you’re fighting them singularly or as a group.
One of the things we really enjoyed in Shadow of Mordor was getting to show the backstory of Sauron and seeing Sauron in fair form and seeing the history of that. So now we get to do that same thing with the Nazgûl, so we actually get to reveal the history of who some of them were, and of course their relationship to the rings of power, which of course means their relationship to Celebrimbor and Sauron, so it all kind of gets twisted up in that. But the identity of some of them, we were also able to weave into the lore of Middle Earth in some really interesting ways."
Tolkiens epic trilogy only mentions two Nazgûl by name: Angmar the Witch-king and Khamûl the Easterling. This means Monolith has a sandbox to play with in terms of background stories for the rest.
More characters from the books may also make an appearance. de Plater was asked about "weird" characters like the Barrow-wights and the spider Shelob and whether or not they'll make an appearance. He responded with a tease.
"We've definitely got more stuff to show at some point."
Middle-earth: Shadow of War hits stores on August 22 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

The abilities will expand upon the experience introduced in the first game, Shadow of Mordor. Monolith describes the game as such:
"In Middle-earth: Shadow of War, players wield a new Ring of Power and confront the deadliest of enemies, including Sauron and his Nazgul, in a monumental battle for Middle-earth. The open-world action-adventure game is brought to life through the expansion of the award-winning Nemesis System. The robust personalization from the first game is now applied to the entire world where the environments and characters are all shaped by player actions and decisions, creating a personal world unique to every gameplay experience."
In Middle-Earth: Shadow of War, players control Talion once again as this time, he fights against the Nazgul. We're even told that there will be detailed boss fights against them.

Middle-Earth: Shadow of War will launch this August for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

While my hype remains pretty consistent with this game, the videos they have been showing since the initial reveal haven't been as exciting. I'd really like to see some general free roam and map size.

Shadow of War is basically a loot fest, and it looks awesome

Middle-Earth: Shadow of War is shaping up to be a real successor to 2015's epic title Shadow of Mordor. Last week, we got a look at the new predator skills that players can use while sneaking up on enemies. Today, IGN got an exclusive look at the weapons and gear functions of the game, and they look to be a massive upgrade from the previous game.
In Shadow of Mordor, equipment wasn't really a thing, although runes could be equipped to weapons to augment them. Now, Talion can equip new weapons, armor, and runes to his ring of power. Not only that, but the concept of challenges to power up weapons also returns, albeit in a different way. Each weapon has an optional upgrade that can be met by performing a challenge listed on said weapon at any time, unlocking it and making it even more powerful.
Take a look at the video below:
[YT]YhpFWYHGnV8[/YT]

Another thing we've noticed is that enemies are no longer just Uruk-hai. We see Talion fighting a Troll, who's also a commander, bolstering the number of enemies in an exciting way. We also know Nazgul will appear as bosses.
The mechanics to climbing the ranks look very exciting. Hopefully, these new upgrades don't make the game too easy, as Shadow of Mordor became kind of a cake-walk as the higher levels were achieved.
If you're like us and can't wait for Shadow of War, check out this 16-minute look at the gameplay.

I am finding the first game ridiculously addictive, hope they keep that for the sequel. Half the time I am ignoring my mission and just going around fighting things, it's so much fun.
