Shane Black Directing Predator Sequel! - Part 1

I still think there would have been mileage in bringing Arnie back. Playing an aged Terminator with comedic undertones is one thing

There certainly is somewhere to go with Dutch. That awful Terminator film may have directly affected a reprisal here, which would be a damn shame. An aged robot was just a stupid idea to begin with and even so Arnie actually sold it pretty well and was the best thing in the film by a wide margin.

I have zero problem with no Arnold / Dutch in the film. Would it have been interesting? Perhaps. If I remember right he was originally supposed to be the Keyes character from Predator 2, so they had some plans for him. It was a blessing in disguise because we got a great Busey casting and performance out of it.

It's certainly a better fit for ArnOLD than another Terminator role.

I thought the original concept had Arnie playing Dutch's brother, Police Detective Schaefer, in Predator 2 only for the character to get changed to Lt. Harrigan when Arnie passed and Glover came on board. Dark Horse then went on to use Schaefer in the comics?

seriously? Curious. Twin brother, presumably?

Presumably. I think the comic just said he was Dutch's older brother, but that could still mean the older of two twins.

The story that I heard was that Arnie was supposed to return as Dutch. But Dutch was going to have gone a little crazy and become obsessed with hunting down the Predator, kind of like the role that Gary Busey ended up playing.

But Arnie declined because he didn't want to play villains/antagonists at that point in his career.

As for Arnie coming back, I'm mixed on it. On the one hand, it would be cool. But on the other, just bringing him back to try and capture nostalgia shows a lack of faith in the new film to stand on it's own. And also lots of people complain when they've done that before. You shouldn't HAVE to rely on old-man Arnold showing up briefly to make your movie work.

Spoilers!

According to people who've read the script Arnold is indeed back. But in a slightly larger than Luke Skywalker/David Dunn capacity at the end.

He also looked pretty freaking broken mentally and emotionally at the end of the film. I could picture him having become a burnt out alcoholic or something, who was unable to get over the loss of his team.

Exactly. This is not a triumphant hero.

Exactly. They could go places with things like this.

Look, I'm not pretending for one minute that the original 1987 Predator was some finely-tuned, indie character piece. It was a sci-fi action film which received mixed reviews at the time, and the entire production was hit by problems. The end product became hugely popular because the cast and crew worked hard to overcome these problems and create something which was unique, and memorable. However, one of the big factors in making the film work and which they got very right was the cast/characters - each member of Dutch's team was quite unique and different from the other, and they used actors whose individual traits ensure they owned the roles rather than slipping anonymously into a group. They were memorable.

None of the films that followed did that successfully; Predators made a good attempt at it but I felt that Brody, Goggins and Fishburne were to thank for that.

I think fans of the Predator franchise would certainly wonder what became of Dutch, and having Arnie play the role again as a PTSD sufferer would bring some gravity to a new film, rather than it being just yet another case of the Predator wiping out person after person until it faces off against the last guy.

This immediately makes me more interested in the movie.

As a side note, I thought Holbrook was great in Logan as Donald Pierce.

It does but you know what Bill Paxton's death has hammered home to me? That these guys certainly aren't getting any younger and as we get older the chances of us losing our heroes increase. So when I see a possible glorified cameo leading to a bigger appearance further down the line or a project indefinately shelved like the Alien film with Weaver and Biehn, it makes me think 'just get them in the damn movies while you can!'. Time definatley isnt on their (or our) side.

Yeah Paxton death is a hard one to take. Annie should have been in the movie from the start.

I think you mean Arnie.

Unless you're hoping that the Predator will activate his self destruct device rather than listen to a little red headed girl singing "Tomorrow! Tomorrow! I love ya, Tomorrow! You're only a day away!"

Yeah I actually meant Annie, nothing to do with auto correct at all :cwink:.

I wouldn't mind seeing Adam Baldwin's character return for a cameo as well.

A cameo? Why not give him a starring role? He takes over for Gary Busey's character as head of the Predator task force with Dutch and Harrigan as part of the team in advisory positions.

so who are the women who are in this film?

While I can appreciate the diverse cast, it's down to Olivia Wilde and Yvonne Strahovski. I'm sure there are a few other actresses but are not featured players.

But because it's Shane Black, he'll give them things to do and have plenty to say. He's good at that! The one lazy trope of some movies, that includes Sully and American Sniper, is the thankless 'worried wife on the phone' role, and we probably won't see it here.
