Shane Black Directing Predator Sequel! - Part 1

The casting is the only thing that's bothering me for this film. I wouldn't care normally, but there's an 11 year wait between Predator films on average, so it just annoys me they do this.

Yvonne Strahovski Joins Shane Black's 'The Predator'

Yvonne Strahovski, perhaps best known to audiences for starring five seasons in NBC’s Chuck, is in final negotiations to join the cast of The Predator, Twentieth Century Fox’s reboot of the sci-fi action franchise.

Shane Black is directing the movie, which began production Monday in Vancouver. Black also co-wrote the script with Fred Dekker.

Boyd Holbrook leads an ensemble cast that includes Room breakout Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Trevante Rhodes, Thomas Jane, Alfie Allen and Olivia Munn.

Strahovski will play the mother to Tremblay, a troubled boy who is accidentally drawn into the conflict with the fierce alien creatures by her ex-husband, played by Holbrook.

Cool. Hopefully she actually gets some cool stuff to do. Chuck and 24 showed that she's capable in action roles.

Is...this the parody reboot?

I sorta get it.

Here's the thing - I like the actors on an individual basis. Sterling was great in 'People vs OJ', Keye is a great comedic presence and did a good job on 'Never Think Twice', Jacbo Trembaly was a powerhouse in 'Room', Trevante Rhodes was good in Moonlight (though he probably had the least amount to do during his characters' arc), Boyd is slowly winning me over as a leading man/character actor blend, and so forth. Even Munn can be good when he role fits her (I just don't like her bad attitude in the past).

But it's hard and a little weird to see them together. Maybe because it's so unexpected and unconventional.

Was like my first time in this thread and I just saw the cast pic.

I wouldn't past Black to make this more "tongue-in-cheek".

Black is an actor's director, in which he can work well with the cast and make it all work.

That's why I like it. Black can take actors you don't associate with characters and utilize them with strengths we didn't think they had. Look at Gosling and Kilmer. Even giving RDJ a chance before his comeback. RDJ in Kiss, Kiss Bang, Bang was a nice prelude to showing us his trademark Tony Stark personality.

And I'm glad to see more people liking Holbrook. The guy's got potential. I can already see that in the Logan trailers. He's pretty charismatic and in the hands of Black? He's gonna be terrific.

Hell yeah, Strahovski is an awesome addition. Just reading her name I miss Chuck all over again.

I agree. I think the most interesting cast member is Thomas Jane, an actor that I ultimately like, but like a younger version of Ron Perlman, who is often in B-movies and will show up in anything. Sometimes in big movies when he's needed..then back to VOD release afterwards.

If he's not part of the main cast I'm curious who he's playing.

Wow Yvonne is in this now? 2010 me is very excited. I loved the first season of Chuck, never followed up and watched the others. I should get on that.

I don't know how unconventional it is when the last two leads where Danny Glover and Adrien Brody. There's no real conventional casting with Predator. But the brand has proven it isn't strong enough to succeed withouth a star attached. I feel like going weird with the supports would've been great if Benicio Del Toro had stuck around, but by getting Holbrook, most of it feels like a cast of benchwarmers.

I need to stress I'm not asking for roid munching meat heads. But there's no added value elements, aside of Thomas Jane.

It's hard for me to get excited about Predator casting when the original had a team of superheroes. You don't have guys like them anymore though.

They could have managed it if they went with a straight up remake of the original rather than a sequel. The Rock is the new Arnie, arguably, so I could buy him as leader of a group of SEALs or commandos. Joe Manganiello as Blain. Javier Bardem as Sonny. Forest Whitaker as Mac. etc.

And who would be playing Dillon, that son of a *****?

Quite honestly I've been thinking the same and was contemplating posting as much, but you beat me to it in a better way than I could have said it. Not feeling the cast at the moment but hopefully that will change - I mean I like most of the actors but there's no one there that has an 'oompf' factor - this may be one of those movies that it greater for the sum of its parts instead of having 'larger than life' actors/characters [for want of a better phrase].

And Michael Jai White as Dillon. Now there's the oompf factor I was talking about.

Not necessary IMO. The idea brings back memories of Independence Day: Resurgence, and I never want to be reminded of that film for the rest of my life.

Good shout :yay:

I still think there would have been mileage in bringing Arnie back.

Playing an aged Terminator with comedic undertones is one thing (one ridiculous thing I should say) ................................... but playing the serious role of an aged Army vet living in seclusion, and suffering from the PTSD effects of facing off against an alien, losing his team and being one of the few humans alive to survive a Predator encounter? After seeing some of his chops in Maggie, I think he would have nailed it.

Imagine the team above - Rock/Manganiello/Jai White/Bardem/Whitaker - being assembled to track another Predator which has arrived on Earth, and Dutch being reluctantly brought in on a consultant basis.
