Shang - Chi

I kind of like the idea of Shang Chi playing out as a sort of Indiana Jones meets James Bond style franchise. Mystical artifacts, globe-trotting adventure, and with the best fight choreography that the industry can provide. That's how I'd pitch it.

Perfect, I honestly would be very happy with this cast. But who could direct? No way would marvel cast the director of the raid.

Also, the movie ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ bombed in China. How should marvel learn from that? I can’t speak for all of China but I do remember when I went to Hong Kong it looked like the most popular marvel character was Ant Man

Crazy Rich Asians bombing in China was not surprising, because the cultural cache doesn't really translate. Crazy Rich Asians (in addition to its own merits as a film) was a huge deal in the U.S. because movies with majority-Asian casts are virtually unheard of in Hollywood, something that is obviously not a problem in China, where almost all of the films put out star Chinese casts.

I would say Shang-Chi would actually face a similar problem, since while the idea of a Chinese superhero is something that is going to be a big deal here (especially to Asian Americans who rarely get to see themselves represented in superhero movies), China might not see what the big deal is.

But, as Black Panther, Suicide Squad and Deadpool have all shown, you don't necessarily need the Chinese box office to be a success.

Marvel missed their opportunity to cast an Asian in the part of the Ancient One in Dr Strange. Now if they had a crossover, Tilda Swindon as the Ancient One will just look really out of place and inappropriate. Why on earth did they whitewash the character? If they wanted to make it female, there are plenty of Asian actresses.

Why did Crazy Rich Asians bomb in China? What didn't they like about it?

Maybe Marvel won't care if Shang Chi doesn't do as well in China. :o

I wonder what they love about Ant Man so much. :D

Never heard of this character but as an Asian I'm really excited.

It's another genre that hasn't really been seen in a Hollywood super hero movie. A straight up martial arts flick. I always hoped they would do an Immortal Weapons martial arts movie, but I'll happily settle for this.

There SO MANY talented martial artists turned actors out there. I just feel there's some snobbery and elitism when it comes to stunt performers in Hollywood. Really unfair on. Especially when you consider the same prejudice isn't extended to models turned actors. Gal Gadot was a model with a handful of movie credits to her name, but she get's roles offered to her. That's also how Cameron Diaz was a model before her first major role in the Mask. Cara Delevingne etc.

For some reason people appreciate beauty more than the ability to kick someone in the face.

To those who are more familiar with this character , is he the traditional or modern kind of martial artist? If it's the former then they would really need to nail the choreography, something along the lines of Donnie Yen's Ip Man, which in my opinion Hollywood has not been able to produce yet.

Well he was created in the 1970s and modelled after Bruce Lee, so very much a traditional martial artist. But whether Marvel will go in that direction or if they want to go more fantastical and gravity defying like Crouching Tiger is another matter.

Hmmm , but Bruce Lee's style are more modern though I think. He did say traditional forms are too rigid if I remember correctly. Guess will have to wait and see what Marvel wants to do.

I'm excited for this. I'm glad marvel is not abandoning obscure characters for xmen and f4. we need characters like this to keep things fresh.

Yeah, but it depends on what the original poster meant by modern or traditional and whether he was talking about traditional Kung Fu films which used actual fighting and acrobatic skill as opposed to modern ones which rely heavily on wirework and trickery.

Bruce Lee's films are considered classic (and traditional) martial arts films even if his style might be more modern compared to others. Modern martial arts films might be ones like Crouching Tiger, House of Flying Daggers, some of the Jet Li films etc where there's tons of wire work, defying gravity and less realism. They're a world away from any of the Bruce Lee films.

These modern ones might look more fantastical, but they're also less impressive than classic/traditional martial arts films where you see people's actual skill and fighting prowess. It's like the difference between watching the Matrix and watching gymnasts at the Olympics where you know they're doing it more for real.

Oh I meant the fighting style that they use. For example Ip Man or Once Upon a Time in China would be considered traditional and The Raid or SPL would be considered modern.

Oh... you were the original poster. Wasn't looking.

I think they can do a mixture. In the proper version of Game of Death (which is incomplete), Bruce Lee and a bunch of friends have to fight their way through a several-storey pagoda. On each level, there is a different opponent who uses a different fighting style. The film was meant to showcase Bruce Lee's versatility and show how adaptable Jeet Kune Do was. He needed to change his style to be able to beat each type of opponent instead of being stuck in one rigid style.

Since Shang Chi was based on Bruce Lee, then although he's Master of Kung Fu, he should really be Master of Jeet Kune Do. So he should be able to fight in many different styles and mix it up to suit whoever he's fighting. He should also have opponents who use different styles, forcing him to adapt.

Don’t know. Maybe because he’s the most practical and maybe even scientifically plausible? I mean, not like for example someone like Thor who flies without wings or gas propulsion (assumably). Or maybe there’s just more of a recognisable factor in San Fran than New York? Idk. Also it’s a great flick so there’s that

Oh right, thanks for those.

No worries

By the way, the role already seems highly coveted by some fairly big names

One of the key supporting cast will be from China, and is relatively famous because that will mean loads of $$$.

And if Jackie Chan is cast, this will be the first MCU movie I will definitely skip, not even for free in streaming or on a plane. I can’t freaking stand that Commie party lapdog whose only actually chop is ham-it-up.

No Lewis Tan. Only way I lose hype for this project is if they cast him as Shang-Chi. If he gets a supporting role? Fine

I smell crossover.

More seriously, Silver Samurai could actually make a pretty cool villain for the Shang-Chi movie.

If we get an Iron Fist in this, it won't be Finn Jones' Danny Rand.

It was a joke. I don't expect Iron Fist to pop up.

I honestly never heard of this character, the same way I've never heard of The Eternals. But, to be honest, I'm not really excited for this.

The Eternals is an ensemble, which appeals to me more, and sounds more intriguing and different. Shang-Chi, so far, doesn't.

But I really enjoy Marvel's commitment to add more diversity to the MCU.
