Shang - Chi

I can't wait to see more from this project - looks like it'll be really cool!

Never thought we'd get a Kung-fu sort of movie from Marvel but I'm all for it.

I'll be the 8000th person to say that I'm excited for them to get actual stunt coordinators and an actor capable of fighting involved this time, as opposed to whatever nonsense they tried to pull with Iron Fist.

Shang Chi technically always did have powers thanks to his mastery of Chi which made him essentially superhuman. He can break steel with his bare hands, dodge bullets, dull his pain receptors, has superhuman awareness (can hear opponents heart beats & breathing with pinpoint accuracy which means it is hard to sneak attack him), he has been shown to also be as quick and agile as Spider-Man.

It's like Captain America. Technically Steve Rogers has no powers but the super-soldier serum really makes him capable of what most people would consider superhuman feats so Roger is superhuman.

Give Shang Chi a helicopter to hold down! :o

Then both he and MCU Captain America will definitely be stronger than Lou Ferrigno's TV Hulk who had trouble holding down a helicopter with both hands and combined with the might of Thor!

Shang Chi can also make a improvised weapon out of almost any ordinary object in his environment. He can wreck you with whatever he gets his hands on :cwink:
I'm sure there will be some non Asians, because they're still going to want to connect it to the wider MCU, and the rest of the MCU are non Asian.

But what I'm saying is that Shang Chi doesn't need some kind of white or black side kick (like with Shanghi Noon or Rush Hour) who provides most of the acting/ comedy etc while Shang Chi only does the fighting. I don't want it to look like an Asian actor can't carry a movie on his own but needs back up from a Caucasian or black actor to make it more palatable to Western audiences.
I have no doubt an Shang Chi will certainly be the lead but every Marvel film has supporting characters and often there is some diversity in the supporting cast (Howling Commandos, Warriors Three, Scott Lang's buddies, Falcon, War Machine, Nick Fury, ect)

In terms of non-Asian cast members the most obvious ones to include from the comics would be

Shang Chi's adopted African brother N'Nai.

Allies Sons of The Tiger who are ethically diverse. The trio is made up of Chinese leader Lin Sun, African American Abe Brown who is also the brother of Spider-Man villain the prowler and caucasian Hollywood actor Bob Diamond who dated Colleen Wing in the comics.

Black Tar Jack who is white.

Nick Fury, Maria Hill, Lance Hunter, Tod Radcliffe or Everett K.Ross in place of Denis Nayland Smith who Marvel don't have the rights to anymore.

I kind of like the idea of Shang Chi playing out as a sort of Indiana Jones meets James Bond style franchise. Mystical artifacts, globe-trotting adventure, and with the best fight choreography that the industry can provide. That's how I'd pitch it.

Id love to see Jackie in the MCU
but I don't know if my child-brain could handle him as a villain lol

Too bad Iron Fist couldn't have gotten its own movie as well. Seems like he wasn't suited for Netflix. They couldn't show anything of note.

I would have liked to see a proper Iron Fist meet Shang Chi.

I think I’d cry if I saw him as a villain lol.

If they make a Shang-Chi movie my guess is they will grab another more prominent Marvel villain and fit them into this story.

Surprisingly pumped for this. What I love about lesser known characters is there's plenty of creative flexibility with minimal chance of fanboy backlash because he's not that well known.

Very similar to Blade. Some people still don't know that he started off as just a regular human in the comics bu they upgraded him to a half vampire. I predict a similar upgrade to Shang. He'll probably be on at least a super soldier level of strength and skill. Some Kung fu chi mysticism.

I hope they give him his duplicate power too.

They won't just use some martial artist type, they';ll find an asian dude that is an actor first and foremost and then train his ass.
There's actually a fair amount of perfectly capable actors that are good martial artists. Off the top of my head, Lewis Tan and Daniel Wu from enter the badlands could do this role in there sleep.

Thank God, Marvel Stud10s aren't putting him in the wasteland, that is Marvel Television.

Stoked for Shang Chi!
I expected him to turn up in the next season of Iron Fist. Almost a good thing the show is canceled. lol

.

It's another genre that hasn't really been seen in a Hollywood super hero movie. A straight up martial arts flick. I always hoped they would do an Immortal Weapons martial arts movie, but I'll happily settle for this.

There SO MANY talented martial artists turned actors out there. I just feel there's some snobbery and elitism when it comes to stunt performers in Hollywood. Really unfair on. Especially when you consider the same prejudice isn't extended to models turned actors. Gal Gadot was a model with a handful of movie credits to her name, but she get's roles offered to her. That's also how Cameron Diaz was a model before her first major role in the Mask. Cara Delevingne etc.

Danny Rand is probably off the table. But there's no reason he couldn't throw down with another Iron Fist. Or an Immortal Weapon.

Sounds good

I know most hate reading subtitles but man, would I love for this to be a predominantly Mandarin speaking movie. I know it limits casting choices as well but I do love the authenticity it gives to regional specific films, particularly Chinese Kung-fu films.
I know there's a bit of this in BP but this would be a bold move if Marvel did this.

I don't think they can get Jackie Chan as a villain. People will not want that! I think he has to be more of a mentor to Shang Chi or something. Even invent a role if they have to. But not playing a role that was once Fu Manchu.

If they make a Shang-Chi movie my guess is they will grab another more prominent Marvel villain and fit them into this story.

They can steal one of Iron Fist's villains and make him into one of Shang Chi's. It's not like Iron Fist is going to use them anytime soon. :o

They'll do a little.

How likely do people think that Marvel will get someone like Jackie Chan for this movie in a role? He's a Kung Fu legend and having him in this film would add a ton of gravitas to it. For what other film could they possibly get him to star in the MCU?

And how about someone like Jet Li? Is he likely?

Not getting at least Jackie Chan would be a huge missed opportunity.

Of course, with Black Panther, they did still miss out on casting a lot of famous black actors like Denzel and many others. And apart from Forrest Whitaker and Angela Bassett, not many of them were huge black stars.

But to not have Jackie Chan in an MCU martial arts movie would seem like madness.

When the Shang Chi forum opens, we need a similar thread to the one in Black Panther about black actors they could cast in that movie but for Asian actors.

If they want Jackie Chan, they would get him. I can't imagine a world that he wouldn't want to be in this. And personally, I think casting him as a villain is exactly the sort of thing Marvel would do. (See Redford in TWS)

Maybe they'll get Ming Na Wen in a role but not as Agent May.

This might be my most anticipated upcoming MCU movie aside from the obvious Avengers 4.

I can definitely see them getting Jackie Chan in this and I'd welcome it.

I'm curious to see how quickly this develops. Early next year we hear about a director?

This is a project where the stunt team is gonna be really important. We've seen audiences are willing to forgive so-so action or dodgy CGI if they are invested in the story and characters, but this is definitely a character where the fighting is actually gonna matter a lot.

I could see Jackie Chan as The Prince Of Orphans aka the green mist.

Donnie Yen might make a good Zheng Zu. Not sure he has the gravitas to pull off the part but he certainly has the marital arts skills.

Jing Lusi would be my pick for Leiko Wu. British-Chinese actress Lusi was in Stan Lee's Lucky Man and Crazy Rich Asians.
