Shazam Shazam! Box Office Thread | Early Predictions

Well if Shazam is playing more like a Kids/family film, It's because WB marketed it that way.
"Family family family".
"A movie you can take your kids to".
We heard those types of things constantly in the marketing.
Not the publics fault if they followed suit.
Well, I looked at some of the box office collections of kids movies, granted that they need to be adjusted for inflation but just to give an idea, Shazam is not performing like those..

The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl

Domestic: $39,177,684 56.4%
+ Foreign: $30,248,282 43.6%
---------------------------------------------------------
= Worldwide: $69,425,966

Spy Kids: All the Time in the World

Domestic: $38,538,188 45.0%
+ Foreign: $47,026,122 55.0%
------------------------------------------------
= Worldwide: $85,564,310

Why should that make any difference, look at animated movies like Lego movie/ Minions movie, it's primarily for kids, yet adults go to see it and they do well.
Somebody pointed out about PostTrak exit poll. While Shazam has a good score in general (I saw the score at BO article before, forget its precise number), apparently kids are the one who gave it higher score in average.
But it's just one day, BO folks are waiting for Wednesday number.

This is too. Even the poster and the last trailer.

They even hide any hint of its darker aspects and cause some parents complain. Heck, some social media users were warning people about it.
I'm surprised it doesn't bite WB in the butt more, even (gratefully) got an A Cinemascore.

Not surprised at Shazam's drop, it is playing like a kids movie or at least similarly enough. That is how they advertised it. I'm still expecting a sub -40% for it's second weekend, but I'll wait till Wednesday for a better guess.

Funny enough going by your avatar, look up Ralph Breaks the Internet.
- 1st monday: 83% drop
- 2nd monday: 85% drop
- 3rd monday: 77% drop

And it opened at 56 million, although it had another 20 million from wednesday and thursday before the weekend. Ended at 200 million.

Aquaman had literally nothing to do with this movie. For better or worse, we are not yet at a point where the general audience makes a natural association with the “DC” brand or logo unlike Marvel. You throw “Marvel” on Captain Marvel, it makes a billion. The GA is taking these DC movies at face value as they come and its also because DC’s advertising each of these things as their own individual thing. Maybe in a few years after Joker, BOP, WW84 and Batman do well the DC name will start to click with people but until then then these are all standing on their own legs.
I think a fair part of the GA still don’t even know what DC stands for, which makes branding a bit more complicated. Marvel stands out because it is an unusual word but if they had branded as “MS” I bet awareness would be lower.

The horror and mythical stuff was good. Not sure why they didn’t play that up too. One guy I know who had decided against seeing it in the cinema perked up when I mentioned that as he’d thought it was an outright comedy.

Probably because the family audience was their first target, with the older crowd getting the message that it wasn’t just a kid flick via WOM after OW. So keep spreading the word!

The Monday drop was to be expected. It’s April, not July.

This CANNOT be said enough. School is on so day showings will get nothing and it was the NCAA Title Game so that would hit it hard as well. People's expectations of this film are ridiculous.

I think they have a responsibility to show anything that might make it not appropriate for kids of a certain age to help parents decide whether it's right for their kids to see it. And I think it would have done better with more adults as along with the comedy which I believe looked good to many, it would have had another hook. Like how Deadpool has great comedy but also great action. That extra hook might have been the difference between those who were on the verge of deciding whether to see the film in a cinema or wait. The WoM will likely be good, but it needs to make money quickly with Endgame on the horizon. I think we'll get some very good weekend holds before then at least.

I agree they could have shown stuff in the trailers that wouldn't spoil things but still give a more "action adventure" tone, like they could have shown the Sins attacking the Wizard in some quick action cuts. I don't think showing the Sins would bother anyone.

This might factor into the bigger drop, in addition to the reasons already stated:
Deadline:

While general audiences enjoyed Billy Batson at 4 stars, 61% recommend.” The general moviegoers, who are the overwhelming majority of the audience, have way less enthusiasm about the movie.

Another factor that BOT guys are bringing up is the NCAA final was last night, which might have taken eyeballs away.

Pretty sure a couple of people around here said the same thing.

The movie is doing fine people need to chill the bleep out.

I was looking at the Fantastic Four (2005) numbers (a movie that made 330m on the same 100m budget and got a sequel) and I ended up looking at the budget at The Numbers compared to Box Office Mojo.
Both FF and Shazam have larger budgets reported by Box Office Mojo compared to The Numbers.
Shazam's budget is reportededly 85 million by The Numbers instead of 100 million. FF's is 87.5m.

Most doom and gloom in social media are unfortunately from people who are weirdly rooting this movie to fail or somehow to 'prove something', anyway.
Most media and BO folks think it's fine.
WB is working on its sequel and Black Adam movie.
We're fine, we survived Justice League BO doom and gloom phase.

It's more likely below $100M.
The $100M budget was from 2 weeks ago but Variety etc wrote below that number ever since.

Yeah, the budget reports are all over the place. I’ve been figuring 90 just as a compromise number. But that they are already putting a sequel into motion tells me that whatever we think, WB/NL are happy with its performance and really that’s all that matters. We’re going to get more Shazam and that’s all i wanted.

I feel that way, too,
Nothing to worry about now, so, anything it makes from this point is GRAVY!

I think people are overly sensitive about this movie and any talk of disappointing box office is totally dismissed cuz of the smaller budget--- but the audience doesn't know that the budget is smaller to them this is just another comic action packed movie and on that front this one came up short. Its the lowest opening gross of any DC movie and when its said and done, while it will 100% be profitable, the audiences didn't turn up in droves for this and support like most of us thought.

Just look at the poll up top! Almost 60% of us said this movie was gonna do over 700 million globally. That poll is a true measure of our collective expectations for this. Now people are having an about face and saying they never expected this movie to do those kinds of numbers.

And lastly seeing that only 60% of adults would reccomend this movie is perfectly aligned with my earlier thoughts that this movie is aimed at kids and personally I would NOT reccomend it to anyone over the age of 16, now on the other hand, I would highly recommend this to the kiddies!

Lol you seem to be in the minority on treating a very profitable movie as a disappointment, I guess the critics, various box office experts, mainstream press and fans are all wrong and sensitive. I bet Marvel were so disappointed when Cap and Thor made 300-450M when they started out, and you were very critical of their "disappointments"

And if you browse my posts, I have said it will make 350M and that would be a win, right from the start.
