A random thought, but one I keep forgetting to post: did anyone notice how the headquarters for the Summit were based upon the design for Blofeld's headquarters in OHMSS?

On a disconnected note, I am quite happy as I just picked up a theatrical poster of the film from the local theater.

Were they? The meeting place looked like it was on the side of a mountain, not built on top of one. Or I am I completely wrong about one of them?

Cumberbatch's Sherlock vs. Harris' Moriarty would've been glory incarnate.

Cumberbatch's Sherlock destroy's Harris's Moriarty in 5 seconds flat. To straight forward, to easy to explain. His wants and needs, that of an ordinary man.

I meant if Harris had played Moriarty in BBC's Sherlock.

I suppose not.

Tom Hardy, on the other hand....

Awesome mental image is awesome.

I was referring to the architecture. I believe you're right about the placement, but have not had a chance to check, as I am on my lunch break.

And Moffat's Sherlock wins best adaptation of "The Final Problem". Kind of sucks for this movie that it came around at pretty much the same time.

As much as I love this movie I'm going to have to agree. The Reichenbach Fall is the best adaption of the Final Problem by a clear mile. Though I do like the Russian Vasily Livanov version as well.

saw it last night
thought it was much better than the first movie
a bit too much slow motion for my taste though, but other than that it was great

8/10

Saw it last night and, to my surprise, it was pretty decent. It did do what I feared: it took away all pretense of mystery-solving and turned it into a location-hopping Hollywood action flick that happens to be set in the 1890s--but Jared Harris's awesome, cold menace as Moriarty (a level of composure that hides his madness and is the complete opposite of Downey's manic Holmes) made the film immensely entertaining. Anytime he was on screen, the movie came alive in a way the somewhat turgid first film never did. He and Holmes' battle of wits, particularly at the chess board, elevated this above the dumbness the trailer promised.

Though with that said it had a few problems I still disliked. Again, there was no mystery and it was a generic actioner for most of the film. This became almost painful during the 10-minutes of pure slow motion inanity in the German woods shootout/battle sequence. Also, Noomi Rapace was fine as Sim...but like Irene Adler in the first, she had little to do other than look nice as the female tag-along for Holmes and Watson (no denying the charming chemistry between Downey and Law) and to market in the trailer. Which leads to....

KILLING off Irene Adler? Really?! One of the great characters of Sherlock Holmes mythos?

Overall, it was even less like Doyle's creation than the first film, but the Holmes-Moriarty scenes made it more entertaining and ultimately it worked as what it was.

7/10

My opinion.

Funny thing happened in the cinema. My missus, during one of the slow-mo sections, asked me if the director guy is the same one who did Watchmen. I lol'd. Quietly, of course.

Guy Ritchie's slow mo is better than Snyder's though. I thought the escape scene in the forest was brilliant.

Although it's opened lower then the first movie , the sequel is holding up quite well. THe way things are going , this has a good chance of making as much as the first one.

I see it ending at 190ishmil but I think that 210mil is out of the question. Still it's saved itself from embarrassment by not dying after that low opening weekend. I'm sure a 3rd will be made but it's clear in the U.S that the audience didn't grow from the first film and that's notable because usually films that only do early 200mil and were said to be well received get some sort of bump.

A sub $200 million finish is completely fine for this movie. Its heading for a WW total of $450-500 million which is around the first film.

I'll just add that this was MUCH BETTER than Iron Man 2. It may not really be Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, but they're pretty entertaining. Although I wonder if a third one will work. The thing that kept this movie from dissolving into Hollywood explosion boringness was a top-notch villain played by Jared Harris. I hope they return to it revolving around a mystery for a third, because if it's a similar plot without Moriarty....I could see the series stumbling very hard.

I really don't know where they could go with this for a third film. I imagine Moran will play a part when Sherlock re-emerges but I have no idea what could happen after that. Where do you go after Moriarty?

I was thinking maybe the Hound of the Baskervilles. The thought of Holmes having a slow mo fight scene with a giant dog is rather amusing. :o

Though it'll more than likely be an original story similar to the first film.

It could start with Watson following clues and hints that Holmes' has lief tto find him. And in the process, Holmes has been investigating a case, and is able to do so easily since everyone thinks he's dead.

Hey, he survived and went on to be the villain in LXG! Hehe...

But in seriousness, it was done so much better in the comic.

The idea of Moriarty is cool in LXG, with him manipulating everyone to joining a team to get what he wants, it's in the comic, and the film, which was fine, but Richard Roxburgh didn't really fare well. I didn't really buy him as the Napoleon of Crime, this criminal genius in the end. It's funny too, being that he played Sherlock Holmes in a Hound of the Baskervilles adaptation.

In the League comic as I recall, Moriarty survived the fall as well.
