we should all learn welsh.
it sounds like you have peanut butter stuck to the roof of your mouth and I have seen some kick ass lettering with welsh words, so I'm going to say that it welsh for everyone!!!!

While it shouldn't be national law, states like mine, southern California, and New Mexico should require Spanish throughout gradeschool. The future and prosperity of the southwest cannot disclude our huge latino population. Whether they are bilingual or speak Spanish only, they work and contribute to the wealth of our states. We, therefore, need to stop plugging holes with our heads and create a special clause for bilingualism.

This really echoes my views as well.

There is a lot to be learned from people to learn another language. Not just the language, but it helps to understand other cultures better, and we live in a globally diverse world. It really enriches an individual to take the time to learn another language, and really in a medical situation, having some knowledge of another language ie. Spanish, or other languages could help save a life.

First they should learn proper English. :oldrazz:

anyone entering this country should learn how to speak english period.
like dew said i dont care what they speak at home, but they should learn english when communicating with the general public.

learning spansih should be an option in grade school. but people who enter our should assimulate themselves to the english language.

Why going political? I learned English for practicity ( and to post in here)... But I gotta admit it's a very poor languaje, Spanish is the most Beautiful Languaje Ever!!!!!! SPANISH FOREVER!!!

We're too lax with immigrants at the moment, we don't force them to learn English by putting out signs in Spanish, we also don't twist their arms to assimilate either. People that move to America should speak English and people that move to Mexico should speak Spanish.

President Theodore Roosevelt stated, "We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

It annoys me every time I see a Texan saying "Happy Cinco De Mayo". If you move here you're an American.

I'm not a racist nor am I a nationalist, but if we let this continue we'll end up like what happend in Quebec where they tried to leave the country.

It's very common in British schools to learn French from Grade School then in High School adding German to the lessons (I was also taught Latin but that's not really useful in modern world). It's incredibly useful to learn other languages for travel, in business and looks fantastic on resumes. With the world as it is at the moment I think Japanese would be very useful to be taught in High Schools.

So yes, I don't see why people in America shouldn't learn at least Spanish in schools.

I thought English was the most spoken language in the world
Really, the only major English countries are the UK, the USA, and the majority of Canada. A lot of Europeans can speak fluent English as well. Grand total, probably a billion people on the planet (out of 6.5 billion) speak English as their first language. After all, the most populous countries on the globe are China and India.

I don't believe that it should be mandatory for Americans to learn Spanish simply because thousands of Mexicans enter the country illegally every year. The US already has to support these people freeloading off of the system, so why should the citizens of the country have to adapt as well? I've no problem with southwestern states promoting the learning of Spanish in elementary or high school, but by no means should people from Idaho or Vermont have to learn it as well.

On a similar note, I'd like to see French being more actively promoted in Canadian high schools, especially out here in the west. I despise being a Canadian citizen who can't speak French. It's different from the states though, in that French is one of our officially recognized national languages. Spanish isn't in the states, and in all likelihood will never be.

You can speak it all you want in Mexico. It's this "Spanish Nationalism" that annoys me. If I moved to Japan I'd only speak Japanese.

I'm not against Americans learning Spanish, but I want immigrants to learn English too. Learning languages is good for you.

I usually don't subsribe to a political party but you could call me a 'liberal'. Immigration is my one "conservative button", I think that all immigrants should assimilate and speak the national language or in the case of the US the the commen language. I think that work places and schools should also become "English Only Areas".

Are you kidding me? You're saying a new immigrant can't go to work unless he/she takes maybe 2 - 10 years of English? For older immigrants, it's much more difficult to learn the English language. Many families would be separated. It's like not letting you work in Japan because you don't speak Japanese, or in Russia because you don't speak Russian. There are going to be people who can't speak the country's common language. Is it your problem? No. Deal with it and move on, that's all I can say. :o

I didn't suggest making Spanish an official second language. More the fact I think people should learn the language of closest neighbours. It's incredibly rude when you see English speaking tourists traveling all over the world assuming everyone will speak English. Training in other languages especially at a young age when it will stick with you - I can't see how that's a bad idea.

But while we are on the subject, Wales, Canada, Finland, Ireland, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, China and India (to name a few) don't seem particularly chaotic and they all have at least two official languages if not many more.

I think it shouldnt be mandatory but an option in schools. It wont hurt, after all, I'm trilingual (first language was Greek even though I was born and raised in California and I started learning spanish in middle school) and while that might not help my spelling, it definitely helps out my vocabulary and resume.

That said, Spanish? Well that makes sense here in California and some other states like Texas, but the whole country? Not really. If anything, more than French and Spanish should be offered in schools.

But really, does it hurt to know another language? If anything, that'll help you out at some point in life, whether at work or on vacation.

1.- this is complete and utter bull****.
there's a lot of English speakers we have tons of US citizens that merely live here because it's chaper.
here in Mexico and we don't mind.

about every single thing here is posted in English and spanish.
I don't care, I guess I have stronger stomachs than most of you.

2.- all empire hubs have had multiple languages spoken in them.
again, I can understand that it gets under your skin and stuff But this would be an issue if you were being forced to speak spanish.
which you're not.
and the argument of " I got pickles on my whopper because of this!!!:cmad:" is dumb, I've had english speaking idiots completely mess up my order and I see no rush to outlaw stupidity.

LOL and I love how illegals with no access to "the system" can magically freedload  that **** takes talent.

Whats your opinion on Hispanic immigrants coming to America without an understanding of English and then refusing to learn how to speak it?

LOL refusing to learn  LMAO!!! "I'm going to speak spanish forever!!!!! :cmad:"

They should force everyone to at least know two more languages than their own. Period. It's stupid to live in a world like this and only speak one language.

Oh, and if you move to Japan, you will learn Japanese but you won't starve to death if you only know english. It is also stupid to say that "If you move to X you should learn X" especially coming from Americans who, by the way, can go around to any other country because it will be almost secure that they will speak some english.

So yeah... More bilinguals/trilinguals/polyglots = less misunderstandings and more culture to your life

If you cannot speak the lingua franca you have no business here outside of being a tourist.
