I'm getting pretty tired of being called a racist about it too, I don't give a rat's ass if they're Polish, Japanese or Mexicans. It just happens the most of them are Mexicans in this area.

I don't think you're a racist.
you're making an issue out of something that Isn't though.
the Spawn asks if everyone should HAVE to learn spanish.
no one HAS to learn spanish, and no one will ever HAVE to learn Spanish.
it's dumb and it's the same Issue that bubbles up whenever a speficif minority is brought to the foreground.

again, a mishandled food order comes from incompetence, and will Keep happening even if everyone speaks the SAME language.
NON issue, seriously.

You can speak it all you want in Mexico. It's this "Spanish Nationalism" that annoys me. If I moved to Japan I'd only speak Japanese.

When I Visit the USA or England (not so often) I Always speak in english...

But I still Prefer and love my Languaje, therefore I Spect it to expand al over the world. Anything wrong with that?

I think everyone should speak english, if thats the official language of the country you're in. Plenty of people here don't work and claim benefits because they don't speak enough english to get a job. I'm hoping that sometime soon they'll cut benefits for people who aren't learning english with a view to getting a job.

If I was going to move to Italy, I'd learn Italian. We're emigrating to Canada in a few years, and so we're learning french. Sure, most Canadians speak english, but some are more comfortable in french. Its common courtesy.

Every citizen of the world should learn Esperanto as a second language; then no matter where anyone goes, or whomever one happens to meet, there would be no issue of communication, or who should speaks who's language.

Esperanto as the world's lingua franca; it's a great idea that never caught on.

:o :cwink:  :woot: :oldrazz: :wow: :word:

I think it's always good to be at least bilingual. Learning a second language should be optional though. Should everyone in America HAVE TO learn Spanish? No. They should be able to choose what language they want to learn. That being said, considering one of our closest neighbor is a Spanish-speaking nation and we have many Spanish-speaking people in our country, it can be quite beneficial to learn the language. But it should not be made mandatory to learn Spanish.

I think people should speak the Lingua Franca, and not be required to learn a foreign one. English should be a prerequisite for obtaining residency in the country.

The sheer irony of people arguing that others should speak english by calling it "the lingua franca" is pretty funny.

I'm surprised by the results...

That`s right.Only one language,it makes sence.America has English from its former British rule.America is not going to make a whole new language, simply keep the one they first had.Like i said,German and French should or was secondary.

There are more German Immigrants than any other group, yet they dumped their language and never spoke it again. Why shouldn Mexican immigrants do the same thing?

When Wal-Mart puts both spanish and english on their packages, they're propagating a form of indirect slavery. Fact of the matter is, if a Mexican wants to come to the land of opportunity, they're not going to get very far without being able to read and speak english.

well, you're ignoring three key facts.
one
German and English have the same roots, therefore learning one from the other is ridiculously simple.
like Italian or to a lesser extent, portuguese for Spanish speakers.
second.
"they never spoke it again" Is a lie, plain simple, Language is part of a person's heritage and most people place a lot of value in that.
third.
I haven't seen anyone not want to learn English. I haven't heard of people that want to live in the US not learn it.
if you're talking about the Illegal immigrants, it's simple, if they knew Enligsh to begin with they wouldn't have to leave.

plus you misspelled "shouldn't" but that doesn't make your point any less valid. I just thought It was Ironic given your post from yesterday.

Then you have obviously never lived in a border city. I lived in El Paso, TX for two years and met quite a lot of people who lived in the U.S., one had lived here for 30 years and had never learned English.

The point is, in El Paso, the people catered to the Spanish speaking, therefore, they didn't need to learn English to get by. As a result, I myself was forced to learn Spanish in order to cater to immigrants who refused to speak English. I now live in Atlanta, GA, and the people here do NOT cater to people who don't speak English, and it therefore forces them to learn English to get by. If the immigrants sre put into a situation where they MUST learn English, they will, other wise, you better get ready to learn a new language yourself.

honestly i think that everyone should have to learn some random Native American language.
take it back to the ORIGINAL native tongue.

I wouldnt mind learning spanish (seen that im going to be spending a couple of months in South America)

LOL Most Americans have a hard enough time learning English.

no alot of my old roomates live in Argentina and Peru and only know spanish.
ahhh... i just think it's super cool when people know Portuguese.
it's quite different from Spanish.
i just find it amazing that in every other part of the world people know multiple languages and in America, "the melting pot" we refuse to learn more than one.
