should i buy an xbox360

I would expect Skyrim to run better on a 360 because of Bethesda's PC history. Probably Mass Effect too.

Though I don't really care about comparisons much so I don't follow them a lot, but from the majority of articles I've seen the 360 versions are almost always better. Sometimes only slightly. From what I've read the PS3's ram and some bus bottlenecks are what keep multiplatforms from parity. John Carmack has been mentioning it in RAGE interviews lately. If you want in depth anaysis in order to make a more informed opinion I'd suggest looking at sites that compare two on a technical level. I think more importantly than graphical differences are the performance differences which those types of sites usually cover as well. A lot of people seem yo use digitalfoundry.

Proceed with caution though, the rabbit hole is deep.

hmmm........this is very interesting. Luckily, I'm planning to get Skyrim and ME3 for the 360.........lol

thanks!

so, if I ultimately decided to start getting more multi-platforms games for the PS3 ( especially upcoming ones like Skyrim, Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect 3, etc. ), I shouldn't feel bad for missing out on some huge graphical improvement offered by the 360 versions. Correct?

cuz I really do like the exclusives available for the PS3, as well as the free online.

No man, even if there is slight differences from one version to the other, they are going to be EXTREMELY minimal. For instance, in the Ghostbusters video game that released a few years ago, the difference between the systems was that on the 360 version, when your proton stream caused damage you could see tiny firery embers left by the stream, however on the PS3 there were no little embers. I mean usually its things that small thats different. Lighting in games also tends to be better on the 360, with the latest Mortal Kombat being a good example but again man, its all such small irrelevant details that it doesnt matter which system you go with, you are going to get the same game.

So on the PS3 is the blu-ray player rate 720p and not 1080p?

No it plays 1080p

I've been trying to determine the same thing. Whether I should get an XBOX360 or PS3, especially after watching the E3 conference.

What games are you interested in? Are you a big online gameplay fan? What systems do your friends have? Those are the questions you need to ask yourself.

I have both systems because i couldnt just pick one over the other. I prefer the online experience of the 360 but prefer some of the exclusive games Sony offers(Metal Gear, Uncharted, inFamous).

Actually, this is an issue I've been confused about myself.

I own both a PS3 and a 360. I'm trying to build up my PS3 collection; I also like the fact that PSN is free. I hardly play online, but it's nice to know that feature is free and available if I want to.

One thing that has made me hesistant to buy more PS3 games is the "fact" that, for most multi-platform games, I've noticed the PS3 versions say they support 720p on the back of the box. Whereas the 360 versions say they support 1080p.

This also shows up on my HDtv. The PS3 games show they run at 720p while the 360 games show they run at 1080p.

Does this mean that the 360 games do indeed run at a higher resolution, thus equalling better graphics than the PS3 games?

Based on Asteroid-Man's post, it would seem both systems run games at 720p. But then, why do the 360 games say they support ( and run ) at 1080p?

That's the part I'm confused by.

cuz if there's no real difference in graphical quality, I will start buying more multi-platform games for the PS3 instead.

don't mean to hijack the thread. but perhaps it is relevant to the discussion of PS3 vs 360.
As far as I know, both systems up-convert. I think 360 just states that it's 1080p either way, whereas the PS3 won't because the PS3 can support native 1080p AND upconverted 1080p (from 720p) - so I guess it's easier to distinguish for the players.

EDIT: Unless 360's upconversion is based on an encryption within the graphics field data on the disc and not just a sharpening of the video data.

Not many games are in full 1080p...

I mean, correct me if I'm wrong but DAII on the 360 ran in 1080p but the PS3 version ran 720p.

I had the PS3 version and it did indeed run in 720... not sure about the 360 version, that's just what I was told.

you are correct. I have the 360 version and it does run in 1080p.

I'm sorry to say this............but I'm still confused...........lol.

if PS3 can support 1080p, why don't the game boxes say they can support 1080p, and why don't the games say they run in 1080p on my hdtv?

PS3 EXCLUSSIVE games were CREATED and burned in 1080p because they can easily fit on a BluRay Disc. 360 games can only burn 720p because of the disc size. I'm guessing 360 encrypts the games that have remaining data space on their discs so that the console can properly convert the actual 3D graphics field to 1080p, as opposed to just up-converting the 2D video by sharpening the image. PS3 does not support graphics encryption because it doesn't need it when its discs can just burn at native 1080p. However, games available on BOTH consoles are burned in 720p because they were first developed ON 360's (as it's easier) and then ported to PS3.

Because PS3 can only up-convert the 2D Video (what you see on the TV - the actual "pictures" if you might), it advertises the games at 720p to distinguish the difference between a TRUE 1080p game on the console and a 720p game + up-conversion.

360 on the other hand will advertise 1080p on the games with encryption available (which converts the 3D graphics (or the digital three-dimensional graphics WITHIN the game world)) even though they were burned at 720p. Their games which were burned at 720p with no space left over on the disc for the encryption, will just include the standard VIDEO (picture) up-conversion and be advertised at 720p.

wow.........thanks!

so, PS3 only advertises 720p on multi-platform games because it does not upconvert to 1080p. IOW, those games are not "true 1080p" and PS3 does NOT advertise them as such.

OTOH, Microsoft advertises 1080p on multi-platform games because it does upconvert the 720p games to 1080p. However, those games aren't "true 1080p," just upconverted 720p.

Is that correct?

And isn't that a case of Microsoft "fudging" the numbers.......so to speak?

Well they BOTH up-convert, 360 just put extra effort into find a BETTER method of doing so, whereas the PS3 does a standard up-convert.

And no, because if Microsoft has enough room on the disc, it will (I'm assuming) implement the encryption up-conversion, which will pretty much give you true 1080p - but if they don't have room, they'll do a standard up-conversion (like the PS3) and just label it 720p like the PS3.
