The movies should still be about Peter, but they should be more about his responsibility towards the city, not just in his personal problems that just happen to be tied to some sort of wider-scale peril. The movies should start focusing on his role as a hero - that is enough to put him at odds against a villain; there needn't be some sort of personal connection (and this is the only reason why I would actually not want to see the Lizard next).
I partly agree with this, partly disagree. I think it's great when Spider-Man fights random crime, just guys trying to rob a bank, or villains with no personal connection to him. On the other hand, part of what makes Spider-Man stories so great are the relationships he has with his supporting cast, and the way that the soap-opera drama plays out. Like it or not, Spidey's strongest villains are all really closely connected to him, and I think that's why people wanna see the Lizard more than any other villain. It adds to the tragedy of the story. Look at Iron Man, Obadiah Stane was Tony Stark's mentor. Look at Batman Begins, Ducard was Bruce Wayne's teacher.
So bottom line, the main villain should be connected to Peter Parker, but that doesn't mean that every villain featured should be changed to make him connected, like Sandman. Throw some extra random bad guys in there, Kraven, Vulture, Electro, whatever.
