The Defenders Sigourney Weaver is the Big Bad Villain of The Defenders

So much for her playing Janet.

I don't understand why people keep saying every older actress working with marvel in Janet when Rudd said they are still very early in development.

We won't hear who is playing Janet until casting starts next year I would imagine.

My inside sources are telling me that she is playing Marvel's version of Hillary Clinton.

Seriously though, I'm thinking MCU Viper or Lucia Von Bardas

She can't. Both of them are at Fox. Madame HYDRA is with the X-Men rights. Lucia Von Bardas is with the Fantastic Four.

The rights may be split with Madam Hydra available to Marvel and Viper with FOX.

My guess would be a version of Typhoid Mary.

older Typhoid Mary? Some weird Bullseye/Lady Bullseye hybrid? Titania? I'm at a loss...

Great that they managed to get her. I have no idea who she could be. What female villains in the Marvel universe are there that aren't just fighters but also big bads? I can't think of anyone on a Kingpin level or even slightly below that. I'm guessing she'll just be a politician or businesswoman who employs the Hand.

Lucia Von Bardas is with the Fantastic Four.

She's Latverian, but she never appeared in a Fantastic Four comic. My best guess is she's a Marvel character, they just can't say she's from Latveria.

I don't think looking to the actual Defenders comic for a clue to her identity will help since the lineup is different and they fought much bigger foes, not street level villains. Which comic can we look to instead?

I think her character kinda loses her purpose if she is not from Latveria, her role as a post Doom Latverian Prime Minister is what defined her.

I think that they could go with really out of left field choice, I don't think they make her a really physical villain, I think Typhoid Mary should be around Matt's age and I don't think she would make a great Titania (who really isn't a Big Bad villain anyway.)

I wonder if they will make the Beast (the demon, not the X-Men character) the villain and have Weaver play the Beast's human form. Really the Beast is such a nebulous character, that Weaver could play that character and that would fit with Defenders trailer, which suggests the Hand will be involved.

I was under the impression that the Black Sky was the MCU's version of the Beast.

Heroes for Hire and I guess Daredevil

and if I were a betting Nerd Supreme, I'd bet that Sigourney is an adaptation of Celia Ricadonna

Unless that is confirmed in the show, that just seems like conjecture at this point.

Sure.

And nobody seems to have brought this up but I think it's worth considering that Sigourney might be a gender flipped version of a male character. There's precedent; I could totally see her as a female Silvermane or one the thousands of mob bosses in Marvel lore. Just putting it out there.

Plus the Marvel TV villains tend to be far more interesting/get far more development/nuance, than their film villains.

Just timing and speculation. The article I read used the term binge-watching which made me think of Netflix obviously (even though it wasn't used in a Netflix specific context), but more so the timing of the comments, which made it seem like an announcement could be imminent. NYCC was just around the corner and a place where such an announcement could be made (and was Netflix heavy on the Marvel side).
I am sorry, I accidentally quoted the wrong post. I was responding to a money issue. My mistake.

I think if she is supposed to be a threat to the entire Defenders team, I would assume she be more of a powerful villain then just another crime boss.

What would a female Silvermane or Ma Gnucci bring to the table that Fisk or Cottonmouth couldn't do? DD and Cage defeated crime bosses on their own, I think the Defenders series needs something a bit different to be the Big Bad of the series.

I could see the Black Sky being a weapon the Beast uses and the Beast is a separate character.

Speaking about Silvermane and other mobsters... I'd like to see Hammerhead soon. And Tombstone, too. I think they would fit well in Netflix sphere, even though they are mainly Spider-Man villains.

I said this in a different thread, but I think Weaver is going to be playing a politician or mobster who cuts a deal with the Hand, hoping they'll take the vigilantes out of the picture for her. Just a personal prediction.

She's nearly 70 years old. I find it hard to imagine she'll be doing much ass-kicking.

Maybe Monica Rappaccini, since illegal experimentation seems to be a recurring thing in these shows.

I thought there was something about the Hand worshipping the Black Sky or something like that.

Anyway, I don't think there are any female members of Snakeroot (or, frankly, many prominent ones anyway). My guess is she's more likely to be a westerner reaching out to team up with the Hand than anything else, which points towards crime boss. No idea, though.

As for places to look, I'd look towards Daredevil, Heroes for Hire, Iron Fist solo (may still be mystical), or anything Marvel Knights. I'd also consider others who fight organized crime and the Maggia, so even Iron Man could be in play.

Anyone think she could be playing someone connected to The Hand through Nobu's associate "Tyler" who showed up in the last episode of season 2? Maybe she's from the IGH company that's shown up in DD, JJ and Luke Cage before this.

Edit: The character "Tyler" being:

Actually, that makes a whole lot of sense. The Beast as is is a giant human/bull hybrid made out of smoke. That's way too expensive to do for 8-10 episodes. I think she may very well be The Beast or at the very least the leader of the Snakeroot. Maybe she's a gender-flipped Ken Wind?

Since Drew Goddard is involved, that's probably the connection. She was in Cabin in the Woods.

Hopefully she will get lots of good scenes and dialogue and it's not just a "female kingpin" or something.
