Comics So I have the option between Birthright and Man of Steel.

man of steel definatly. I never cared for Birthright. The whole "Soul-Vision" thing never seemed right to me.

Man of Steel. It set the foundation for Superman's entire post-crisis mythos (which was fantastic) until Birthright came out and stirred things up, provoking all of these pointless continuity changes that have come out of DC since BR's publication.

I would recommend Man of Steel over Birthright.

Man of Steel, no question. Best Superman comic ever.

I'm reading Birthright now for the first time. I think if you want the classic origin of Superman from the post-crisis era, go with Man of Steel. But at this point, I still think that Birthright was the more interesting read.

I've only read Birthright, which I highly recommend. I've been dying to read Man of Steel.

Birthright - Apart from a few small things like the "Soul-vision" I thought it was great. It takes the best elements from earlier origins and what people who've only seen the films thinks when they hear Superman and blend them together for a great new origin story.

I can't imagine a Superman that doesn't eat filet mignon (was that what he ordered in Kingdom Come? It's been a long time)

but yeah a vegetarian hippy CK just doesn't seem so super to me.

While Birthright as a mini and "elseworld" was ok, Man of Steel defines the character for me imo.

I thought BIRTHRIGHT was a more interesting read. MAN OF STEEL was okay. The best Superman origin tale is SUPERMAN FOR ALL SEASONS, no battle.

In my opinion, because of Infinite Crisis and whats going on with Superman Confidential, I'd pick neither. I've been reading and reviewing Cpnfidential (Superman AND Batman) and from the whole story of Kryptonite to the ship of Kal-El's, to the fact that this series is about what happened to Superman in this Post-IC continuity, MoS nor Birthright doesn't fit what's shown in this series.

I'd say get both as "past-stories" knowing full well they aren't in continuity anymore. I'm just waiting for a new origin story that's Post-IC. That Annual comign up sounds like it will include that.

And five years later, they're just going to retcon that too.

I've given up on expecting DC to make an origin story for Superman and stick to it. At least while the current editorial staff is in charge of things, in any case.

Birthright. A more traditional origen redux.

I read the man of steel when it first came out, and I remember what a Superman fan I went to school with told me about his opinion about John Byrnes take... "The Kryptonian are Klingons and Superman hatches from a Scapeship Egg on earth like friggin Mork." Yeah, it was kinda dumb funny, but it's pretty close to what you see that Byrne brought to the Mythos. Most of which is pretty much discarded at this point.

What is that, some kind of "ghetto" power that turns him into James Brown?

Don't read Birthright, IC retconned it as the official origin.

Does it matter if it's 'official continuity' or not? Who really cares?

There are fifty years of great Superman stories that are technically 'not-continuity' anymore. Doesn't matter. All that matters is; is it a good story?

no, if I remember correctly Superman could see the essesance of all living things including plants and animals. if was really weird and just didn't seem superman to me.

Where can I find "The Man of Steel"? Is it still in print?

you can probably find it online... try Ebay or Amazon or even Barnes and Noble...
