So, I just turned down two promotions.

Best Buy is gonna call me for an interview soon. If that falls apart, I'll just job search in my town. It's a big-ass city.
If it didn't work out with Best Buy, I hope you'll find a better job elsewhere where you can feel happy and appreciated.

Well... I hate to break this to you but you're a failure. :(

NOT! :cmad:

One of my friends looked for a better paying job (same duties basically) and once it was certain that he's getting the job, he told his boss about it and his boss asked him how much they're offering him and ended up offering him more than the other company. Plus 3 months bonus pay at the end of the year. They must really like him.

Yep. That's been known to happen as well. It's a bit different when you go to them and announce you're leaving and have already found another job because you're not happy. It makes them realize you're valuable because someone else tried to snap you up, so they do what it takes to keep you around.

do not remain in your home town. i repeat, go out in the world. this 'store' sounds like a black hole to nowhere. don't let them sucker you in.

It's a job to get him through college. I doubt it will turn into a black hole.

At least when it comes to your effort of not wanting to sound homoerotic.

The thing with my friend is that he's been working for them for so long and didn't get a pay-raise so he thought he should look elsewhere.
Good move on his part and he's very fortunate that his employer finally realized how valuable he is to the company.

CConn, what are your plans after college and what are you planning to study? What is your goal. Retail is a very large sector but on the low end not the most profitable. The jobs get interesting at a higher level and the pay as well.

I realise you are only 19 and what you are doing is great and will look fantastic on your resume when you get out (of course the name of your college will also be very important). Keep it up but make sure you focus on what your goal truly is and what steps you have to take to get there.

Right now, you are obviously on track for anything within the retail sector.

Oh, don't worry, I'm sure I'll transfer to the store in Brooklyn one day.

Well, right now I'm into just taking the steps that qware in front of me. I'm Team Leader of (relatively) quiet area of the store, next I hope to be made Eletronics Team Lead, then Senior Team Lead. Executive would be next... But after that I'd really have to decide whether I'd want to move past that or not. There's definitely a chance to get your own store and even move up in the district and company in that way.

And then, of course, with any of this, I'd get the experience to be able to work in any form of retail or even consumer company.

I haven't noticed that. Except for their shifts are long as hell. 6-4 or 2-12, 5 days a week, yikes,

I didn't notice until I'd worked there long enough to watch 5 execs cycle through and get tossed around the district/country on a whim.

I've recently escaped from retail and I turned down one promotion because of all the BS that occurs as you move up. I work for a dot.com now and I'm in line for a promotion which I will get at any cost. I'm talking I'll do some Jim Profit type stuff to make sure I get it.

It's true they rotate Store Team Leaders very often, but that isn't exactly the case with the other Executives. Most of them, at my store, have been there since my store opened years ago.
