You should check it out again, for me it's still my favorite Batman movie. I put it above any live action batman movie.

What an excellent movie this was. It is my personal favorite Batman film to date and I think it is very close to TDK objectively speaking. Yes, I really mean that.

I am going to make a statement that I think a lot of people will disagree with, including the people that love this film just as much as I do. I think that Andrea Beaumont is the best love interest Batman has ever had. I am including all the mediums Batman has been present in for the past 74 years when I say that. The reason why I believe this is because I always saw Andrea as Bruce's true love, something Bruce has never officially had.

Don't get me wrong, people. Batman has always had a lot of great love interests. Heck, I would argue the character has some of the best love interests in all of comics. However, he has never had a woman that I considered to be his Lois Lane, or a primary love interest in other words. Most other major superheroes have an iconic "it" girl. Superman has Lois Lane, Flash has Iris West, Green Lantern has Carrol Ferris, Spider-Man had Gwen Stacy prior to her death and Mary Jane after her death, and the list goes on. Sure that the primary love interest might not always be there. There might be times when someone like Peter Parker goes after Betty Brant or Black Cat but in the end, things always go back to him and MJ being together because it is who his true love is. Same thing goes for all the couples that I have listed.

On the other hand, I really felt that Andrea was always the DCAU's Batman's primary true love. Maybe this is due to her ties to his pre-Batman days or due to the wonderful chemistry they had. Maybe due to both or maybe due to an entirely different reason. However, that is always what I felt throughout the entire length of the DCAU. It may sound weird since her and Bruce are never together again after he becomes Batman (excluding the events in MOTP) but I think that is there to add to the Batman/Superman dynamic. I think it represents the fact that Batman is surrounded in tragedy while Superman is surrounded in optimism. This is why Clark is able to live his life with Lois throughout the DCAU while Bruce has to abandon his primary love in order to be Batman.

Certainly my favorite Bat-film as well. Every story beat is so well executed. And then there's the imagery about "the future"...

I love the flashbacks of Bruce and Andrea visiting the very utopian future-theme-park. Bruce has so much optimism then. His future is filled with Andrea and joy.

Then the actual park is later filled with despair. Only the Joker, Batman's eternal enemy, lives in the future with him. Its a shift from utopia to dystopia. The robots start singing "Welcome Gotham to the future" and the Joker silences them... "I haaaate that song!" Such a powerful and iconic villain introduction. He hates Gotham's happy future and wants to kill it.

Its no coincidence that Joker calls the Phantasm "the Ghost of Christmas Future."

In each scene Batman's inevitable future is indicated. At the theme park, he sees the inspiration for the batmobile. When he proposes to Andrea, bats fly out of the cave (sends chills up my spine every time). Its like Bruce is locked into a fate that he can't escape, no matter how much he wants to try. He can't escape tragedy. But he refuses to become that which he fights against.

I still regret not seeing this on the big screen back in '93. I really do wish they'd get the old band back together and do another one-off movie set in the BTAS-verse and released it in theaters. Although it wouldn't be quite the same without the late, great Shirley Walker. Alas...

Oh, no doubt. The skeptic in me is saying it'll never happen anyway, but the optimist in me can't help but note that the 60s series is getting rebooted in comic book form. Crazier things have happened...

Damn, now I feel like we should start a petition or twitter campaign or something to get their attention. I mean, Timm has recently produced a ton of those DC Animated movies. Conroy and Hamill have reprised their roles recently. The fanbase would go nuts for it.

I also hear that Dini is quietly working on his own little epic Batman graphic novel, so he's still attached to the character too obviously.

Ugh, the more I talk about it the more I want it to happen.
