As unfortunate as it is, the mod will have to ban "B" for at least a short period of time, whether it be a week or permanent, "B" cannot get away with his/her action, it would set a bad example for other hypester who are looking for any precedent as to why they can get away with "murder"

HYPESTER A seems to appear in nearly every thread HYPESTER B participates in. He makes subtle knocks and insinuations about gay people, but he is civil about it and never uses gay jokes. He also never attacks HYPESTER B directly publicly or privately.

Question: The gay poster believes he's being singled out and harrassed and demands that you discipline HYPESTER A based on "assumptions." What do you do?

KEY POINT: Note that Hypester A is not "direct" with his trolling, nor has he attacked anyone. Technically he has not broken the rules. This is a gray area.

I tell Hypester B to stop being so gay, he's the only homosexual complaining.

Scenario #2

Posting pornography on public boards is condemned by the site's rules. However, Hypester B is now claiming that Hypester A is sending him heterosexually-themed porn via PM. Please note that no derrogatory comments are included, but it is a known fact that Hypester A hates gay individuals. Hypester B feels that the harrassment has elevated to a new level and blames you--the moderator--for only choosing to "monitor" the situation from Scenario 1.

How would you mediate the conflict?

KEY NOTE: According to the site's rules, PMs (private messages) are inadmissable for judgement and should not be posted publicly. However, Hypester B has forwarded you the PMs containing porn for proof.

How has Hypester A broken the rules? Let's review the facts again in this case:

The first part of this is easy. Hypester B should have never posted Porn, that's just a no brainer, with or without spoilers it's still on there for anyone to see. I have seen it happen too many times and the quick reaction of bannning/probation. Although I would sympathize with B, his actions are beyond reasonable, especially when he did not take the previous advice on simply blocking the person (now I am unclear b/c I don't block anyone but does it block pm's as well as messages). But so not to whipe the guy out of existence I would give a probation for him to cool off. Not to mention the deletion of the porn and closing of an unneccesary thread (if not deleted).

(EDIT since I was under the impression you could use it if it came directly from the person - as mentioned later on in the thread) Hypester A I couldn't do anything b/c they haven't really broken any rules but I let them know that if they had posted something like that in the forum that they would be using a deragotory word in a hateful manner and would warrant at least a severe warning.....

I would have to agree with this. The ends do not justify the means. Hypster B has to be temp banned for posting the porn publically now. I would also temp ban Hypster A, because quite frankly, his PM to the mod still contains rough language which in my opinion, lessens his credibility that he is somehow innocent in all this. If he would speak to a mod this way, he no doubt spoke to other posters this way.

Temp ban them both to give them a cooling off period, say 5 days, and then monitor their return very closely. One more screw up by either one and it's a permanent ban. It's a priveldge not a right to post here. If they cannot act like civilized humans, then they need to find another place to go.

Ban Hypster B for posting pornography. No matter what the circumstances, that is an automatic ban.

As for Hypster A, warn him that he instigated the situation and he is the reason that it escalated. He pretty much stalked Hypster B into various threads and persumably went off topic while taking his under the table shots. Regardless of what happened via PM, he pushed Hypster B. I'd inform him that if he behaves like that towards any other openly gay members, he will be banned. That will be his only warning.
