In talking with the other mods, I didn't think it would be prudent to award points to any of the contestants as this is not a tourney, but rather a problem-solving debate.

After the Bonus Round I am going to release a synopsis for each Scenario and how the problems should have been handled. You guys will be able to read that and gauge how you did.

I am not so sure that a PM should be inadmissable for judgement. If this PM was sent to a mod and this guy clearly admits breaking a serious rule, I would ban him permanently. He is only going to stir up trouble and harass other users if he stays. This guy has to go. I say ban him and be done.

Others may have mentioned it, but I missed it....of those up there the only one that I saw that went to other Mods is Spiderfan-930.....that was what made the difference for me......getting another take on things is important.

Scenario #3
For 600 Points

Disgusted and fueled by what he percieves to be ineptness and poor management on your part (as a mod), Hypester B--a known homosexual user--ambushes Hypester A in a public thread. He reveals to everyone that Hypester A has been harrassing him with pornographic PMs, but his demands for justice have been ignored by you (the mod). To prove his story legit, Hypester B actually posts the PMs and porn in SPOILER TAGS for other users to verify.

Hypester B then proceeds to completely rip Hypester A apart verbally, using full expletives in a textbook flaming session. Accusations are hurled that Hypester A is a hypocritical gay basher who actually commits homosexual acts himself "on the down low". Hypester B also insults him with sexually-explicit, vulgar comments accusing Hypester A's father of incest and molestation. Other users reading the interchange turn on Hypester B and begin defending Hypester A, a user who is generally well-liked despite his sometimes crass-but-subtle comments. A 2 page flame war results.

Hypester A--a user who has previously expressed his dislike for gays--does not reply publicly to any of Hypester B's insults. Instead, he sends you a PM asking for mediation in his behalf. His message to you reads:

Man....a whole day of mod contest missed. Damn job and actually having to do work for once!!

Instantly ban Hypester B who, though he has clearly gone over the edge due to Hypester A's coy stalking, has CLEARLY broken the rules...severely. Delete any and all related posts in the flame war and let the other Hypesters revel in the throwdown...which they'll probably post in summation in the Hype encyclopedia.

Tell Hypester A that his warning is still in effect and that there are still gay Hypesters who would take what he was doing in the past as stalking. Inform Hypester A that even though we cannot prove he PMed Hypester B porn that Hypester B didn't go on a rampage for nothing...something had to trigger it seeing as how Hypester B has been a normal poster beforehand. Then post an animated gif of Robert DeNiro from Meet the Parents doing his 'I'm watching you' thingy to Greg Focker.

What do you do?

Unfortunately, poster B has crossed the line and must be placed on probation. I would let him know the how and why he crossed the line. I would also tell him that he allowed poster A to get under his skin, causing him to break the rules, which was probably his original intention. He must have patience and allow the mods to do their jobs. He must be above the games that poster A is playing.

The offending material would have to be deleted, and if a thread was made, it would have to be locked or deleted. I would also let both posters know that any further direct contact in either PM or on the boards that results in harrassment will result in discplinary action for one or both. If they can't play nice, then don't play at all.

There's not much you can do with this, other than store it up for information. At least poster B wasn't lying. Actually, I would look into changing the "PM's are off-limits" rule. It seems poster A is deliberately using the rules to harrass poster B. I would reiterate that no further contact between the two should be made, on the boards or by PM. That would be the best course of action to take to prevent future occurances.

I think that the first step would be to handle this via PM. I think you would have to reply Hypester B and let him know that you will watch Hypster A for a certain period of time and if his assumptions turn out to be correct you will act on your own judgement. I think the main point is to make Hypster B comfortable and let them know you are watching for this type of behavior and will pay close attention to this poster. I think at this point you would also notify other Mods of said reply. If you did find that Hypester A was acting inconsiderate of Hypster B after monitoring them, then I think you would have to warn them initially.

I think that Spiderfan did a much better job than I because of the fact he asked for the input of other Mods, I merely notified the Mods of the situation and my stance on the situation in the 1st scenario.
