"So You Think You Can Mod?"--A Hype Reality Show!

So all people who may take something and say they feel threatened can get someone else a warning? The thread thing may be a coincidence and he has said nothing wrong at this point. So, all you can do is look at the posts. If the posts don't yield anything to make me feel he is threatening him, I don't see where a warning is meritted. Monitorization maybe, but not a warning.

THREADS...plural. There is a pattern...not a singular event. Nip it in the head right away...who has time to 'monitor' someone? You need to deal with things like that efficiently because, as you alluded, there are multiple things like that to deal with on a daily basis.

Hypester A is obviously trolling him so he is breaking the rules.

Sounds like the "A" in hypester "A" stands for a**hole, make that his sig, and change his name to hypester a**hole

I know many posters who appear in threads I do, so again, I'd have to look at what is being said and how he is doing it. Without singling him out, I don't think you have enough to warn Hypster A.

This can be monitored by looking at it yourself occassionally, and asking another mod to do so, also.

This is not just about the one posters feelings. You have to be fair to both posters. In your scenario, I think you're being more generous to Hypster B. He is getting a warning for breaking no rules. I don't think that is right. The fair thing (to me) is to watch it, but not warn at this time.

For 400 Points:

"HYPESTER A has made it known that he despises gay people. He knows that HYPESTER B is gay because they've mentioned it publicly. HYPESTER A seems to appear in nearly every thread HYPESTER B participates in. He makes subtle knocks and insinuations about gay people, but he is civil about it and never uses gay jokes. He also never attacks HYPESTER B directly publicly or privately.

Question: The gay poster believes he's being singled out and harrassed and demands that you discipline HYPESTER A based on "assumptions." What do you do?

KEY POINT: Note that Hypester A is not "direct" with his trolling, nor has he attacked anyone. Technically he has not broken the rules. This is a gray area
.

I think that the first step would be to handle this via PM. I think you would have to reply Hypester B and let him know that you will watch Hypster A for a certain period of time and if his assumptions turn out to be correct you will act on your own judgement. I think the main point is to make Hypster B comfortable and let them know you are watching for this type of behavior and will pay close attention to this poster. I think at this point you would also notify other Mods of said reply. If you did find that Hypester A was acting inconsiderate of Hypster B after monitoring them, then I think you would have to warn them initially.

I am starting to wonder if the Mods are using this thread to do their dirty work for them.....

They are just herding us in like cattle, then we'll get message saying, "you think can do our jobs....well how are you gonna do that banned", and then we all get banned, its a trap

Look for a pattern. If its there then what harm is there to warn Hypester A?

It can be fixed by warning him...quick fix.

I don't see how I'm being to generous to Hypester B at all if I've done my research beforehand. Its clear that Hypester A is being coy about harassing Hypester B. It should be made abundantly clear that harassment should not be allowed...so put the message through and don't dance around the subject.

From the description, it just says he posts in many of the same threads the other does, and doesn't single him out. I don't think this warrants the warning quite yet.

Harassment should not be allowed, but at this point, I don't feel he has crossed that line. This to me is like arresting someone for drugs before you lift up the shirt they are hiding under...not quite there yet.

Psh...haven't you seen Minority Report. That's me man! I can see things before they happen. Quick justice and embarrassing punishment!

But pre-crime in Minority Report was flawed and didn't work.

Until he is officially wrong, there is not much that can be done.

Common sense might dictate otherwise...you can't look at things face value for fear of being too nice.

And he might have done nothing wrong...that is why you WARN him not to. I never said I'd put him on probation right away...as I've stated before. There's nothing wrong with a verbal warning.

It is much like the law though. If this were taken to the police as a stalking case, they would say about the same thing I am.

This is the Hype though...not the police. Everything is subject to perception here. You can't look at everything so black and white...there is waay too much grey area to do that.

But, I've stated what I'd do so I'm done with Scenario 1.

The law is not black and white either, but there is still conduct for grey area cases.

I'm also done with scenario #1.

advise Hypester A that even though he isn't breaking any of the rules, some people might find the knocks and insinuations possibly offensive, and kindly ask him to stop before something worse happens and it becomes an issue.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm......

The answer is simple.

Ban Hypester A without any warning and when he or she logs on, it will give no description as to why they were banned.

And then delete the thread that caused the issue.

Also, I would make no mention that it was I who did that or appear in said thread nor would my name appear as who's currently online, leaving the non-moderators oblivious to any goings on.
