Action-Adventure Sonic 3... and Shadow

Action movies and adventure films.
This was a really fun time, but I still think I enjoyed the second movie more. Now, maybe that will change once I rewatch those movies but something about the first half of this movie felt off to me.

That being said I loved the third act of this movie and this is easily Jim Carrey's best performance in the franchise and whoever came up with the idea of playing off himself deserves a HUGE raise IMO.

Those scenes were gold and Keanu as Shadow was genius casting as well.

For now, I would give it like a 7.5 out of 10.

Carrey's Robotnik works for me because he totally commits to the character's eccentric zaniness. The dude was already halfway to space before, but being stranded on the Mushroom Planet made him even crazier. He's not phoning in the performance. He's basically playing a wacky cartoon character in live-action. It's very goofy but he's so charismatic and good at it that it kind of weirdly works.

Just my two cents.

Totally agreed. Jim is NOT phoning it in here, he clearly enjoys making these movies. This third movie was his best performance out of all three. I'm almost worried what Sonic 4 will be without him.

Also...they kind of wasted Kristen Ritter, didn't they.

You will probably have to do something like Sonic Heroes with Neo Metal Sonic as the villain. The thing is that it was Gerald Robotnik as the true villain this time, but it was still Carrey playing Gerald Robotnik.

The other problem is that Robotnik is deeply tied to many of the threats in the other Sonic games. But then again, Carrey already came back for this movie when he said the only thing that would draw him back before is a "golden script." Sounds like he just needs a good contract offer.

I don't think I ever could've been convinced years ago that Sonic would be the one that would have the best video game based movies, and a successful trilogy at that!

This movie was an absolute blast. I think I actually give the edge to Sonic 2. There were things in Sonic 3 where it felt like they just brushed through a few things quickly but that said it was always entertaining and I really liked the last 30 minutes. Man they really nailed Shadow's backstory.

Also I LOVED the first post credit scene.

Going tomorrow. Been avoiding this thread and videos about it. Looks like it's doing good at the Box Office. I remember thinking it could have a good chance to beat Mufasa if it has good word of mouth, looks like it does! Gotta go fast!

Don't feel sorry for Kristen. She could have been a hedgehog.

Ended up seeing this today because my friend was taking his kids and nephews to it and needed some backup so I tagged along. Kind of the same as the first two for me, didn't love it, didn't hate it but I was entertained. Especially by Jim Carrey. But I swear, all the kids in the theater ERUPTED at the mid credits scene. It was like being at a birthday party at Chuck E Cheese, I was laughing so hard at the amped up reaction that tears were streaming down my face. You would think that a ghost flew out of the screen or something.

Meanwhile there's me who hasn't played a Sonic game in the last 30 years:

As someone who grew up with Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast, I absolutely loved this movie. Jim Carrey had me laughing soooo much haha. I loved all the story they took from SA2. The end credit scene(s)!

I loved that they actually put Crush 40 in here! I just wish they let it play out through more of the battle

Glady they finally used some f'n game music in a Sonic the Hedgehog movie, it only took like four years, lol.

I saw that Escape the City was in the credits, but I don't recall hearing it in the film at all. Did anyone notice Escape the City in the film?

They probably didn’t want to spend too much on the first movie because it was already such a gamble due to video game movies not having a great reputation up to that point and not guaranteed to make bank. They also spent another few million redesigning and reanimating Sonic, and the music from Sonic 3 and Knuckles, which Sonic 2 is based on, is wrapped up in a lot of legal issues with the Michael Jackson estate because he contributed a lot to that game.

Also, licensing music is expensive, and most of the time it’s just not worth it. A lot of films with songs are even lucky to have what they have. These movies, as fun and entertaining as they are, don’t make an insane amount of money relative to their budgets. The only reason they were able to get “Live and Learn” for this film was because a) it’s pretty vital to and has a lot of association with the character of Shadow, and b) I imagine the music rights to secure it were a lot easier to maneuver.

-Sonic 1: $85 million budget, $319,715,68 worldwide box office

-Sonic 2: $110 million budget, $405,421,518 worldwide box office

It’s hard to say what Sonic 3 will make in the end, but it cost $122 million, opened up to $62 million, and will gradually open internationally from December 25 to the middle of January. A lot of people are on vacation celebrating Christmas right now, so there’s probably going to be a bit of a lull right now. That Christmas to January window is going to be the true test.

If I was betting on what the worldwide total will probably end up being, I would guess somewhere in the $500–$600 million range, maybe $700 million. Those first two films were released during and around the Covid pandemic, which definitely affected their box office a bit. Taking that into account, I imagine with how popular it’s being received and being in a fairly normal pandemic free environment, it could do very well. But, with Bird Flu upcoming and Trump as the next POTUS, we’ll see. Covid had a %1 mortality rate, and that really did a number on the box office and theaters. Bird Flu death rate is 50%, and if it’s handled the way Covid was by Trump in 2020, theaters are probably going to suffer even more.

Hmmm i didnt know all of that about the music because i’ve also been frustrated that they surprisingly used no music/themes from the games in these movies unlike say Super Mario from last year which incorporated so much game music which i feel added to the fun experience of that movie.

Live and Learn when Sonic and Shadow go super to fight Gerald and stop him destroying the Earth and Amy's mid credits scene are apparently the major crowd pleasers.

The fact that Ice Cap didn't play during the snowboarding sequence in the second movie is still a travesty, in my opinion. If not Sonic 3, then at least from Sonic Adventure.

I can understanding not using much music from the first two games because Masato Nakamura still owns the rights to that music, but there's a plethora of music to pick across all of the games. Though it makes me wonder who composed the Green Hill music within the movies since it's Tom's ringtone. :hmm:

I would have lost my ISH if they had played the theme from “Super Sonic Racing” when Sonic powered up at the end of the last movie. That would have made an already awesome moment just blissful in my opinion.
