Sony Image works is working on the fx of this movie

What movies have they done work on? WATCHMEN does have some effects, but not likely anything uber-difficult. Some "teleportations", some "fires", and the "New York event".

I'm only really worried about the final scene, if they keep the book's ending. It has to look horrifically real as possible to get the full impact, imo.

Well, the final scene is just a big teleportation, right? We really just see the aftermath, with blood and bodies in the street.

I also think we may be overlooking the one big effect that runs as a constant throughout this film, and that is Dr. Manhattan himself. It's up to Sony Imageworks (I think?) to make him look as convincing as possible.

There's also Mars, the giant floating platform thing Doc Manhattan rides in, Rorschach's inkblot pattern movements, the OwlShip, and is Bubastis going to be in this film?

There's actually quite a bit of FX to be done for this film. I just wonder who's going to get what out of that list of FX houses.

Let's hope some of the faker stuff from Spidey3 was down to them being rushed as it was a very sfx-heavy movie compared to this story. I put the sfx being not of the quality of the first 2 Spidey movies down to Dystryka quitting and not supervising the team anymore. They did do some good stuff with Sandman though, esp the disintegration/transformation scene. A blue person walking around is what I'd think would be their main concern, don't recall that being done before, or the blots, but it sounded like the blots were coming along, according to a report from Snyder a while back.

Five visual effects companies are working on this. Secondly, Imageworks did great work on the Spider-Man films regarding Doc Ock, Sandman and Venom. I also found their work on Superman Returns and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (they did all the CG characters bar Aslan, who was done by R&H) excellent.

Oh god , are we gonna complain again that if VFX need to be done only ILM and WETA are the chosen ones .

Sony ImageWorks has done some damn good work on many movies. Let me say this again :
ALL STUDIOS HAVE DELIVERED GOOD AND BAD WORK.

I love the virtual city that Sony created in the spider-man movies . They also have experience in creating CG humans which would mean that they are have been hired for shots featuring NY as well as creating Dr. Manhatten

The saving grace is that this film isn't really that SFX heavy so whatever they do work on will be better because of that.

I do not like Sony Imageworks.

How is it not VFX heavy ?
1 They have to create a virtual human and make him grow in size in a believeble manner.
2 They have to create a giant glass palace in mars of all places and also make it float.
3 For the scenes where Nite Owl is flying with Archie ( in NY , antartica)
4 Last but not least , they have create NY as it looked in the 80's. Doesn't seem like alot of work on paper but once you really go into he details it's far more difficult.

Compared to the amount of effects in most movies like this, it's not really that much. Dr. Manhattan is the most effects heavy part of this movie.

i think any movie where there is a main character who is completely cgi is pretty vfx heavy. thats why the movie is already done filming, yet is still a year away from its release date. because of all the special effects and editing in needed. other movies like saw for example with practically no cgi can come out every single year.

Doctor Manhattan's effects will make or break this film, IMO. That's no small task.

Sony Image isn't a horrible company, nor is it the greatest company - no reason to truly worry.

Sony Imageworks isn't great compared with ILM or Weta Digital. Hopefully this turns out okay.

That blows.

But hey, few films have just one FX company, the last 'Narnia film had a dozen; ILM, WETA, Rythem & Hues, Zoic, Sony, etc. But Sony is so showy and careless, I hope its not gonna be some mindless FX extravaganza. DO we know whos directing the FX? Because the FX in 300 were pretty bad from time to time (yes, im talking about the wolf.)

But just remember, Spider-man came out 6 years ago, and many of the FX in that movie still look great. Remember Spider-Man 2? Granted, those were under FX master John Dykstra, so it just depends on who's leading them.

Also, dont forget the sandman sequence in Spider-Man 3, or The Vampires in I am Legend (actually, you're more than free to forget that one....eck)

Don't forget:
-Doc Ock's tentacles (and the train sequence...damn)
-The entire movie Surf's Up
-The Transformation scenes in GHost Rider (That was fairly low budget)
-The flying scenes in Superman Returns
-Stuart Little
-Venom
-The Birth of Sandman
-The Symbiote

Doesn't bode well. I don't like their effects work much at all.

I remember with Greengrass, they were intending to do Dr. Manhattan mostly live-action, with CGI effects added on top of the physical being. According to those who had seen the screentests, it looked fantastic.

Wow...theres alot of b****ing that comes with the Watchmen territory, huh?

Sony Imageworks isnt bad. Jesus, anything less than ILM and you guys strap on your lifevests and prepare to abandon ship. Why dont you guys chill out. I love Watchmen too, but I happen to have faith in what is happening with the film.

I think they can do a good job as they're pretty experienced with the superhero genre.

Here's confirmation...

Sony Pictures Imageworks has announced the six features the company is working on:

Sony Pictures Imageworks, the award-winning digital production company whose most recent project HANCOCK opens July 2nd, today announced six major motion picture projects that are currently in production at the facility.

The films include:

• Action thriller EAGLE EYE for DreamWorks Pictures
• Mystery adventure WATCHMEN for Warner Bros. Pictures
• Dramatic thriller UNTITLED RIDLEY SCOTT FILM for Warner Bros. Pictures
• Family adventure G-FORCE, a Jerry Bruckheimer Production for Walt Disney Pictures
• Suspense thriller VALKYRIE for United Artists
• Animated comedy CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS for Sony Pictures Animation and Columbia Pictures

Earlier this year, Sony Pictures Imageworks completed work on the live-action SPEED RACER for Warner Bros. Pictures. In this high-octane family film, Imageworks created three racing sequences; the Desert Rally, Mountain Switchback and Snake’s Demise.

Imageworks is also working on OPEN SEASON 2, Sony Pictures Animation’s sequel to the $190 million hit OPEN SEASON for Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

Each of these films presents unique stories and characters that challenge and inspire Imageworks artists.

There are heroes… there are superheroes… and then there’s Hancock (Will Smith). With great power comes great responsibility – everyone knows that – everyone, that is, but Hancock. Edgy, conflicted, sarcastic, and misunderstood, Hancock’s well-intentioned heroics might get the job done and save countless lives, but always seem to leave jaw-dropping damage in their wake. The public has finally had enough – as grateful as they are to have their local hero, the good citizens of Los Angeles are wondering what they ever did to deserve this guy. Hancock isn’t the kind of man who cares what other people think – until the day that he saves the life of PR executive Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman), and the sardonic superhero begins to realize that he may have a vulnerable side after all. Facing that will be Hancock’s greatest challenge yet – and a task that may prove impossible as Ray’s wife, Mary (Charlize Theron), insists that he’s a lost cause. John Dykstra, visual effects designer for HANCOCK, has won Academy Awards® for SPIDER-MAN™ 2 (2005 Best Achievement in Visual Effects) and STAR WARS (1978 Best Effects, Visual Effects) along with nominations for his work on SPIDER-MAN™, STUART LITTLE and STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE. Ken Kee-Suk Hahn is the digital effects supervisor for Imageworks. Hahn most recently served as the digital effects supervisor on SPIDER-MAN™ 3. HANCOCK is directed by Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights) and produced by Akiva Goldsman, James Lassiter, Michael Mann and Will Smith.

EAGLE EYE is a race-against-time thriller starring Shia LaBeouf, Michelle Monaghan, Rosario Dawson, Anthony Mackie and Billy Bob Thornton. Two unsuspecting Americans are separately drawn into a conspiracy by a mysterious woman they have never met, but who seems to know their every move. By the time they discover her frightening identity, they have become her unwitting accomplices in a diabolical assassination plot. EAGLE EYE is directed by D.J. Caruso (DISTURBIA) and produced by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Patrick Crowley. Edward McDonnell serves as executive producer. Imageworks’ Academy Award® nominee Jim Berney will serve as visual effects supervisor with David Smith as digital effects supervisor and Bob Pietzman as CG supervisor.

A complex, multi-layered mystery adventure, WATCHMEN is set in an alternate 1985 America – in which costumed superheroes are not only real but have ultimately been outlawed – in which one former hero goes looking for the truth behind the murder of one of his own, but uncovers a devastating conspiracy to drag the world implacably closer to its own end. Imageworks’ Pete Travers, a longtime fan of the graphic novel, is the film’s visual effects supervisor, with Dan Kramer as the digital effects supervisor, and Kenn McDonald, who most recently worked on BEOWULF, will serve as the animation supervisor. WATCHMEN is directed by Zack Snyder (300) and produced by Lawrence Gordon (DIE HARD), Lloyd Levin (UNITED 93) and Deborah Snyder (300), with Herbert W. Gains serving as executive producer. It is based on the only graphic novel to win the prestigious Hugo Award and to be named among TIME Magazine’s “100 Best English Language Novels from 1923 to the Present.”

The UNTITLED RIDLEY SCOTT FILM based on Washington Post columnist David Ignatius’ 2007 novel about a CIA operative, Roger Ferris (Leonardo DiCaprio), who uncovers a lead on a major terrorist leader suspected to be operating out of Jordan. When Ferris devises a plan to infiltrate his network, he must first win the backing of cunning CIA veteran Ed Hoffman (Russell Crowe) and the collegial, but perhaps suspect, head of Jordanian intelligence. Although ostensibly his allies, Ferris questions how far he can really trust these men without putting his entire operation – and his life – on the line. Imageworks’ Sheena Duggal will serve as the film’s visual effects supervisor along with John Monos as CG supervisor.

From Jerry Bruckheimer Productions comes G-FORCE for Walt Disney Pictures. Directed by Hoyt Yeatman, Academy Award winner for Best Achievement in Visual Effects for MIGHTY JOE YOUNG, this live-action/CG family feature follows an elite team of highly trained covert agents employing unique tactics and nano-technology must avert a looming global disaster. The Imageworks team is led by Academy Award®-winning visual effects supervisor Scott Stokdyk. Stokdyk has worked on all three SPIDER-MAN™ movies, including the recent blockbuster SPIDER-MAN™ 3. He won the 2005 Oscar® for Achievement in Visual Effects for his work on SPIDER-MAN™ 2, and was nominated for SPIDER-MAN in 2002. Stokdyk received his first Oscar® nomination in 2000 as Digital Effects Supervisor for the creation of the incredible disappearing man and gorilla in HOLLOW MAN. The G-FORCE crew also includes digital effects supervisor Seth Maury and animation supervisor Troy Saliba. Imageworks will also be delivering the 3D Stereoscopic version of the film, led by Rob Engle, senior stereographer & digital effects supervisor at Imageworks.

Bringing a fresh and surprise-filled take to a world people only thought they knew, Bryan Singer (THE USUAL SUSPECTS, X-MEN, SUPERMAN RETURNS) re-teams with his Academy Award®-winning USUAL SUSPECTS screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie on VALKYRIE, a suspense thriller based on the true story of the daring and ingenious plot to assassinate the most monstrous villain the world has ever known. Tom Cruise heads an internationally acclaimed ensemble that includes Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Eddie Izzard, Christian Berkel, Thomas Kretschmann, Terrance Stamp and acclaimed stage actress Carice Van Houten. VALKYRIE, a United Artist’s production, will be released by MGM. Imageworks’ Academy Award® nominee Rich Hoover will serve as senior visual effects supervisor along with CG supervisors Peter Nofz, Dan Eaton, Theo Bialek and Patrick Witting.

Boog and Elliot are back for more crazy adventures. After falling head over hooves in love with Giselle, Elliot's road to the altar takes a slight detour when Mr. Weenie is kidnapped by a group of pampered pets determined to return him to his owners. Boog, Elliot, McSquizzy, Buddy and the rest of the woodland creatures launch a full-scale rescue mission for their sausage-shaped friend and soon find themselves in enemy camp: the world of the pets. Led by a toy poodle named Fifi, the pets do not plan to let Mr. Weenie go without a fight. Can a toy poodle REALLY bring down a 900-pound grizzly bear? Will Elliot ever marry Giselle? Find out in OPEN SEASON 2.

From the Wachowski brothers and producer Joel Silver, creators of the groundbreaking THE MATRIX trilogy, comes the live-action, high-octane film SPEED RACER, which follows the adventures of the young racecar driver Speed (Emile Hirsch) in his quest for glory in his thunderous Mach 5. Joel Silver, who previously worked with the Wachowski brothers on THE MATRIX movies and V FOR VENDETTA, produced the film under his Silver Pictures banner. Grant Hill, Andy Wachowski and Larry Wachowski are also producers. David Lane Seltzer, Michael Lambert and Bruce Berman are the executive producers. The film stars Emile Hirsch; Christina Ricci; John Goodman; Susan Sarandon; Matthew Fox; Benno Fürmann; Hiroyuki Sanada; Asian pop superstar Rain, making his American feature film debut; and Richard Roundtree. The film is a Warner Bros. Pictures presentation, in association with Village Roadshow Pictures, of a Silver Pictures Production, in association with Anarchos Productions. Imageworks’ Academy Award® winning visual effects supervisor Kevin Mack oversaw this project along with Peter Nofz serving as digital effects supervisor.
