Spawn Reboot | Blumhouse

At least this time someone other than McFarlane talked about this. I was beginning to think it was all in his head.

Yeah and it's Jason Blum. That man actually gets s*** done.

Spawn Movie: Script Taking On a New Direction - IGN

In an interview with Abu Dhabi Culture as part of their #CulturAllConversations series, Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions has said that the Spawn live-action movie with Jamie Foxx is still not quite ready, with the script taking a completely new direction. Blum also reiterated that the film would be R-rated.

“The script has got to be right. There is a real desire [for the movie], you have Jamie Foxx, and Spawn, and Todd McFarlane, and like, 'You've just gotta make the movie!'", Blum said. “I think probably I've frustrated Todd a little bit, and I've just said, like, we don’t just have to make the movie, you know we have to make the right movie, with the right script. And it’s a hard script to get right – and, you know, the recent events in the United States around race have made it even harder to get it right. You've got to do it really carefully and thoughtfully.”

“So, we're going to make the movie, definitely. I don’t know when we are going to make the movie. We are actually kind of re-tackling... we're going down a different direction with the story than we had in the past, but we are not going to make the movie until that script is great. But one of these days it will be great and we will make it.”

I wonder what he's getting at, trying to make it more woke to an extent?

I think Spawn may hold the record for most rebooted reboot.

Interesting that he commented on race relations. I know Spawn is black but has the series really ever really focused on the struggles of being black in America? I haven't read a lot of the comics so I'm not sure. But I wonder if he's hinting that the film needs to be centered more on the black hero it's named after and not on a white cop. I personally think that's the route to go; Spawn is a more interesting protagonist than a cop. And given how few black superheroes there are on the big screen, it might rub people the wrong way if the guy the movie is named after is just lurking in the background while 80% of the movie focuses on the white guy.

As long as it means that Spawn will be in the movie for more than 10 minutes than I'm all for it honestly. The movie is called Spawn after all so it only makes sense that he be the main focus and Jamie Foxx is a talented enough dramatic to really pull those kinds of scenes off.

You don't get an actor of his caliber in the title role for nothing.

Yeah, I agree. I can't imagine Foxx would agree to do it if he's just silently skulking around in the background the whole time.

But if they want to make this happen, they'd better move quickly. Foxx is already in his fifties.

Todd should probably open up for some help on reworking the script, honestly. I know he wants total control but outside perspective isn't always a bad thing, if Jason Blum can moderate getting an intermediary voice on the script filling out the new kinds of changes they're looking for now it might help give it some broader perspective than what Todd's bringing as the attached creator who's after perfection with this for so long.

I'm assuming that's what this delay is about. "nice script man great great... Buuut could do with more.. Punch! "

Yeah, I think Todd is in over his head here. Screenwriting and directing is very different that writing a drawing a comic book. Todd's a smart guy and obviously he knows these characters better than anyone but he should at least be consulting with some people who have made movies before if he wants this to be successful. And if they want to make this a commentary about the black experience in America or something to that effect... then I certainly hope that he's consulting with people who have lived that experience (i.e. not rich white guys) so it feels authentic.

He really should it off to someone who is an actual director. Doesn’t have to be a big name either, someone like Julius Avery would be perfect.

There was that one episode about some KKK guy killing minorities, and even that, they didn’t really explore race.

Are you referring to the animated series? I really need to give that a watch. I always forget it exists.

Wow, so they're just tossing out Todd's script completely now huh? We all knew the Spawnless Spawn movie wasn't gonna fly.

It's very strange to me how this is having so much trouble getting off the ground when the character's still proving very viable, always is a top-seller in the industry, having some high-profile high-selling book launches, the toys are going strong, he had a big video game appearance, it's practically a new Spawn-issance. Scratch that, the issue with this getting on the ground is probably Todd's insistence on directing and being so close to it. I mean he has the right to be close to it but I think being that close is what's making it a hard sell for the money peeps. Him doing all the major Spawn pushes again recently is probably all part of a calculated effort to convince the money peeps to pull the trigger, but again it's a different world.

Are Jamie Foxx and Jeremy Renner still involved with this? I forgot it was even happening.

You guys remember that Neil Gaiman sued Todd McFarlane several years ago, right? Holy hell I just read Gaiman’s deposition and it’s absolutely hilarious. He calls Rob Liefeld “illiterate garbage” dismisses Image Comics as “the joke of the industry” and paints a picture of McFarlane as an idiot with a third grade education.

I somehow missed this all these years and I’ve just now read up on it. Totally here for Gaiman ripping Liefeld’s mediocre ass to shreds lol.

why even get Foxx for this, we all know that Michael Jai White can still do it, and I think he would do it better. Foxx doesn’t have the edge this character needs.
