Spider-man 3.1 finally?!

^Interesting little breadcrumb.

Still no solid confirmation either way by now is unbelievable. In case anyone else wants to try their luck asking Sony, here's the address I contacted:

You will probably get the same stock answer I did, but hey. Have a go, we might bother them enough to find an answer.

What in tarnation is an "Editor's cut" and who is the editor?

The description on Amazon said it was a Sam Raimi supervised re-cut of the movie.

Unsure on who the editor is, could be Bob Murawski, the editor of the original movie.

Right, I don't think I've ever seen an "editor's cut" as part of an alternate edito of a movie.

Now I wonder if Murawski did the cut and Raimi signed off on it. So weird that they now at this point have came up with another name for this version(if it even exists.)

Not sure I've seen that description used before. I guess it's closest comparison is the Alien 3 Assembly Cut, which was based on an early rough cut by the director after he rejected the offer to revisit it.

It opens up the possibility that Raimi could be less involved than you'd hope. As with 2.1, he might just sign off on it. We know the guy wasn't satisfied, but he's never expressed a desire to revisit it, at least to my knowledge. My biggest fear would be that it is just the film as-is with 2 minutes of its most divisive moments removed. That would suck.

Couldn't agree more. Also I now see many people turned off by the idea of anything being cut and now simply just want en extended cut.
So they don't want an alternate cut just a bloated IMO, cut with everything it -- which is not what we're going to get if we get anything at all.

Pretty sure I read Raimi saying he was against 2.1, he's one of those filmmakers who feel the theatrical version should be the only version of a film the public should see, the definitive version. Sony made and released 2.1 anyway, he had no say in stopping it.

With Spider-Man 3, his feelings on that may be different because obviously he has admitted he wasn't happy with the movie, it wasn't really his own, so being able to go back and re-edit it into something slightly better he may jump on the chance at.

UPDATE: Not sure if this is the exact interview I recall reading, but he comments on 2.1 and and a possible 3.1 here.

Recently Spiderman 2.1 came out with 8 additional minutes. Were you involved in that?

Yes, that I supervised. And Sony came to me and said, we want to make a 2.1 that gives fans more of the movie. I said but well, the problem is, I want to be good to you Sony, but the problem is you gave me my director’s cut with the main picture, and I don’t want to punish you now, but that, I really liked, that was the movie I wanted to make and you let me make it and I’m thankful for it. They said well, don’t you have things we could still put in that the fans may want to see? I said okay, we won’t call it the director’s cut, but there’s some additional insight into character, there’s a few lines, there’s a few little action bits that were, maybe were unnecessary to make the point that they said the fans would want to see, so that’s what 2.1 is.

On 3.1, before the changed his tune on how he felt about the movie.

So Spiderman 3 is completely your director’s cut then? I assume it’s the same?

Yes, we’ve had a very good relationship like that throughout all the pictures. There are discussions and there’s compromises that you make in any relationship, but I’m very happy with the picture.

So, according to DBS' latest video, the Spider-Man 3 bonus disc is not 3.1.

That dude had nothing to add. The disc wouldn't need to have 3.1 on it, so it doesn't indicate anything. You've got to imagine that Sony would have said something by now. This is such a stupid situation.

They don't view it as a priority release. Like I mentioned before, I don't think they think it would move units to even mention it--3.1 had been sitting finished so they figure they might as well release it now to recoup some money on it and so it wasn't made for nothing.

Whenever they give us the full detailed breakdown of the release specs, all will be revealed. I don't think it's anything weird--many catalog releases can go to the 11th hour without getting a press release. I'll bet Japan got theirs detailed so early because Spider-Man 3 might have maintained its popularity there.

That probably confirms no 3.1. then. Shame, but it is what it is.

Still up on Sony Japan's official site. Let's wait and see.

Hard to be optimistic but I'll give 'em the benefit of the doubt.

Thing is, even if it doesn't come on this set, I think this proved it was planned or possibly ready-to-release. If this new development is accurate, then perhaps they've decided to give it a solo release or something?

EDIT: The product description on Amazon.jp has indeed removed mention of 3.1--but the disc runtime is still the same (486 minutes), which counted the 137 minute 3.1 into it.

Like I said, wait and see.

could be 2 things. We atleast have a confermation of an alternate cut or this has drummerd up so much interest that it might get released at somepoint

All we had to see on a foreign Amazon listing was "3.1", "137" to start a never ending stream of excitement and speculation that this release was ever anything more than what it is......

A quick cash grab tie-in for a re-boot movie.

Not a single word on a UHD 4K release, not a mention of any kind of movie cash promotion and not a single word on anything about the digibook release other than one stinking picture.

They really learned a lot since they screwed this movie up in the first place in 2007, haven't they?

Sony really sucks, don't they?

It could just be a basic re-release and not some sort of new cut.

There's no coverage or promotion of this anywhere. I can't believe for a second that Sony Pictures is stealth releasing a new re-edited version of Spider-Man 3.
