I'd almost considering watching that movie just to see James in a cameo.

It's a really funny movie, I would recommend it even withouth the Spidey references.

Really hilarious movie. Most I've laughed in the theater in a long time (well since Hot Fuzz anyway). Very quality comedy that was raunchy and smart and the best of both worlds.

BTW the references were not a plug in by Sony. James Franco is part of the Apataw group that includes Seth Rogan, Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann.

This guy made Freaks and Geeks with Franco and is about to make another movie with him and Rogan next year. In between he made 40 Year Old Virgin and I think its safe to say Steve Carrell is part of the crew too now and also had a hilarious cameo in Knocked Up.

This seemed like promoting a buddy who made it bigger in a blockbuster franchise in Franco and just gleefully mentioning it (knowing they'd come out a month afterwards anyway and not hurt their own box office).

It had nothing to do with promotion but more an in-joke between the filmmakers/actors who are very close and do a lot of movies together.
