I never cared for Venom either. He just seemed like your typical 90's McFarlane-esque all style, no substance type of anti-character. Then when you take into account that his origin ties directly into Spidey having the symbiote suit first, it adds a lot of additional baggage to any Venom film. He also never really seemed like a character that can stand on his own, especially without the Spider-man tie-in.

E-mails show Arad begging Sony to greenlight Venom because the character is extremely popular in merchandising. Arad has always had a thing for Venom all the way back to him shoehorning the character into Spider-Man 3. But others like Michael De Luca and Matt Tolmach really don't have faith in a Venom movie. De Luca even wanted to go as far as using Ultimate Venom in a rebooted Spider-Man if Marvel isn't on board.

Basically, Venom is pretty much dead for the time being. The writers are gone, the director is gone, no one in Sony has much faith in the project asides from Avi Arad. That is the makings of a dead film.

Hippie hunter is there a story with all this?

If they wanted Venom done properly they should have introduced Eddie Brock in the first movie. The Venom stand alone sounded laughable, like a little kid making stories when playing with action figures. ''Eddie Brock becomes Venom in a super duper way, and then Carnage shows up, and then they fight, and...and...'' Sounds like Avi Arad alright.

Don't think you need to introduce Brock in the first film, but trying to put all that into just one stand alone was always going to be a nightmare struggle.

Good.

It was a dumb idea to do a solo Venom movie and to a lesser but nearly equal degree to do a Sinister Six movie.

The studio is full of hacks at the moment.

Interesting info here. Some Google translation issues, but I figure most of us can figure out the intent of the words.

You see looking at the e-mails, I just don't get why Sony got so ahead of itself and announced all these goofy Spider-Man Cinematic Universe plans. In these e-mails, Pascal comes off as indecisive. Like she's realistic in basically saying that Sony only has the rights to Spider-Man characters and can't really do what Marvel does with the union of heroes and such. They can only do stories about Spider-Man, his villains, relatives, girlfriends blah blah blah.

IMHO, that is not a basis for a shared cinematic universe.

LOL at that exchange with Jeff Robinov. He seemed to ask Pascal if Stan Lee can create another character in the world of Spider-Man. Unless I'm reading it wrong.

Didn't realize the Russo's were doing Avengers 3. I don't think that gives them any time to do a Spidey film until after that, when the rights will have expired unless Sony produces another film in between or gets an extension somehow.

Apparently they are doing to do a Sony film called Gray Man first.

However, would they really have time to do Civil War, then Gray Man, then Avengers 3 and 4?

Russo bros would be huge and a bright light at the end of this dark tunnel .

That report basically made it sound like the Russos want Sony to let them produce Spider-Man and they would either take over in a producer role from Tolmach and Arad, or they would have to work with the Russos and Marvel.

Seriously look at that exchange with Jeff Robinov. He actually seems to believe Stan Lee can create another character for the Spider-Man movies for Sony to use...

Where's Anti-Venom when you need him? He should be a part of Sony. He'd be anti a Venom movie.

Robinov is reaching. Garfield is old enough to play the adult version. Even if they switch directors, what's the point in replacing Garfield and rebooting again with an adult actor, when the guy is 30, or will be by 2018 or whatever? He is simply dead set against working with Marvel. I am sure he has his reasons, but I don't think he has a leg to stand on. I don't see many credible directors touching this thing.

James Gunn won't do it.

I'm not sure which director would do it honestly

The amount of indecisiveness seen with these execs and these producers is quite sad. Also their ideas lack any kind of sense. I don't know how anyone would approve Spider Man taking off the black suit because some people made fun of him wearing it...

The decision to make a shared universe within the ASM universe screwed Sony over so much. It probably lead to them interfering and screwing over much of ASM2, and probably lead to the situation they are currently in.

There's two solutions to this problem. One, Sony can give the character away to Marvel Studios, loosening the character of their indecisive grip. Second, Sony can go ahead and cancel the Sinister Six, Venom and the female spider man team up film, and just focus on ASM3.

From a business standpoint, if the film ends up making a billion at the box office, how much would each side potentially get?
