I knew this was going to disappointing. Oh well, I'll at least rent it.
Not surprisd. Shaba makes another crappy Spidey game. Guess I shouldnt say that until I try it. I'll give it a shot, but not exepcting much

I played a few minutes of the PSP version and I have to say, its actually somewhat decent based on the small bit I tried. But then again, it might actually bad and repetitve like the other versions but I didnt play enough to really assess that

Another?

This is Shaba's first attempt. That'd be Treyarch you're thinking of.

your'e somewhat right. I was actually thinking of Vicarious Visions, who made the horrible Spider-man 3 for the PS2/Wii. I got them confused with Shaba, who made the horrible PS2 port Tony Hawk 8. Activision really needs to restructure its development studios bc alot of them flat out suck

Nope. Fire and sonics.

Nothing about electricity that I've seen hurts a symbiote.

Well, electricity can burn you too. I think when it runs through a symbiote, it should be hurt. In USM didn't Peter get it off with electricity? But in 616 of course, it only tickled Venom when he beat Electro.
just a thought...
for those who've seen the Spectacular series...the black suit gets a little torn when it is attacked by Electro, then it recovers itself and Ock says he'd love to analyse it....

you guys...there are several reviews out there...all saying this game is AT LEAST an 80%...and then IGN comes on with a 5.5 and everyone is acting like they are the only ones that matter. Watch the damn video review from IGN...the reviewer is horrible and if you watch the video the game looks like a lot of fun.

Seriously people...lighten up and try it for yourself first...or at least read another friggen review!

Hey 0neDisturbedSOB (or anyone who has the damn game),

Here's what I want to know about the game:

1. How big is the sandbox (Manhattan)?
2. I want a detailed description of the webslinging:
- Is it faster than Spider-Man 3's (that was a disappointment), can you get going really fast?
- do you have a boost?
- hows the momentum?
- what kind of acrobatics can you pull and what buttons do you press to pull them off?
- any duel web?
3. How's the combat?
4. Is it really that repetative and, if so, is it something that can be over looks because the combat and move set is so damn fun?
5. How are the graphic?
- Screen tearing...does it happen much / does it really effect the fun of the game?
- Is there much framerate slowdown? Does it effect the fun of the game?
6. Have you played SM2, SM3, USM? How would you compare Web of Shadows to them?
7. Most importantly: Is it fun? do the pros outweigh the cons? are you happy you bought it?

Thanks in advance :)

Venom is uneffected by Electro

Spidey knocks himself out with elecrticity, but the symbiote is still on him nonetheless

Eh like others are saying, the IGN review makes a ton of good points as to why this game is mediocre.

-Sub par visuals.
-Horribly repetitive gameplay and combat.
-Horrid story.

Some of the animations looks nice, but like the review said, when you seem em 30 times in one battle, I'm sure it gets old fast.

I predicted this game to get reviews in the 6-7 range. I have no faith in Activision, as a publisher or as a judge of talent with the developers they hire. I still plan on playing this game, just due to my love for anything Spider-Man, but it a damn shame that a developer thats worth a damn cant put out a Spider-Man game.

I know...i was the first one to make the point that IGN had valid points. But I want to hear from more variety...and the majority of the variety i have read so far have said that IGN is largely the minority here. Their points may be valid...but apparently the cons are outweighed by the pros.

Bottom line is, I have my standards for what I will find fun. I can overlook slowdown, not-so-amazing graphics, and meh story when it comes to a Spider-Man game because #1 I'm a massive Spidey fan and #2 I'm a massive action game fan. I don't play Devil May Cry for the damn story.

So...I want my questions answers from someone from here that's a spidey fan and action game fan like me. I was never expecting this game to be Metal Gear Solid 4 quality...i just wanted a large sandbox that I could websling through every so often (like the SM2 days), have amazing combat abilities, and for it to run smooth enough that it doesn't impede the fun. All other qualities are secondary for me when it comes to this game.

Honestly, I'm like WTF, are we ever gonna get a good SM game, I loved SM2 on ps2, and I thought that this one was gonna deliver much in the same way the last gen version did. I still want to play this game, but damn, I wished it would have gotten a better review.

Yeah...I'm looking forward to when we get a Spider-Man game that actually focuses on all elements of game quality: amazing story, graphics, and gameplay. It feels like they never really try to make an amazing story for a Spider-Man game...which is sad, because it's very possible. It seems like they are either trying to get one spidey element or another hammered down...but let all the other elements of the game fall to the side.

For SM2 they focused on webslinging physics and recreating Manhattan while the story mode and the random crimes fell short. In USM they focused on the story, but let the webslinging become way too slow and kid friendly, the combat was a joke, and the city got tiny. Then with SM3 they did a little better with the webslinging than SM2, but still too slow and the air tricks sucked in comparison, the city was larger but the graphics were very meh for what is capable now-a-days, the combat was frustratingly button mash (for example...I WANTED TO BE ABLE TO SHOOT WEB BULLETS WITHOUT HAVING TO PRESS PUNCH FIRST!!!), and once again the story mode and random crimes fell short.

Now we have WoS where the combat is said to be incredible, the webslinging (while still having no duel web quite like SM2...which is frustrating) is very fun, has a good sized sandbox...but the graphics still aren't as good as they could be, the challenges get repetitive, and the story is still meh.

Activision,

Take. your. friggen. TIME ON THE NEXT GAME! get it all in one package! you have all the elements separated into 4 games!!! and give us SM2 WEBSLINGING BACK!!!!!!! #*$*@!

Like I said I would, I went and shelled out $60 for this game after I got off of work, and I can honestly say it was a complete waste of money.

Just kidding....

I've only played it for about 2hrs total, but I have enjoyed it so far. Yes it's true the story is a bit hard to follow, and some of them missions are repetitive, but overall it's a nice change up with the Spider-Man games since the last 3 have been based on the movies. The combat is pretty solid, and the upgrades add a nice twist to your basic moves. Once you chain together combos you'll be blown away with how fluid Spidey moves.

In terms of the city, it's pretty big, at least as big as the others have been if not bigger.

The swinging is by far the best I've encountered on a Spider-Man game, and although I haven't upgraded his swing you still get to move pretty fast, and the little ariel acrobatics he pulls off are the best I've seen to date.

I've read the reviews, and I honestly don't know where the hell IGN got a 5.5 or whatever from. They were right on some aspects (the story), but on others they were WAY off.

I'll play some more tonight and then write more in the morning, but so far I am happy with my purchase, and I would recommend it to anyone who's been a fan of the last few Spider-Man games.

NICE! thanks man...I'm looking forward to you follow up, and if you could answers my questions listed above (though you already answers some of them with this post) i'd appreciate it!

Im glad I dodged this bullet.

How about letting some people that have played the game answer these questions? Greg Miller is screwing ALOT of fans out of a good game. it's ADDICTING. I've been playing from 4. p.m to 4. a.m. which is foolish because i have a long day tommorow....er....today. anyways....on to the questions. :yay:

  1. Manhattan is HUGE. very nice size. about the size of sm3's city probably a little bigger. The scope of it is definitely larger. :yay:
  2. There's easy swing. where its kind of like usm and sm3 and than there's advanced swing, where you speed up with a boost that can be leveled up. the swing system is not sm2. but it is definitely refined and very fun. im not the only one saying this....even greg from ign says it.
  3. combat is really deep. button mashing will get you through but thats the case for ninja gaiden as well. you dont learn the really flashy moves unless you practice. combos are time based.
  4. isnt every game repetitve? I'll get back to this later....but yet it does kind of start out slow...but its a spidey action game. things are always switched up on you to keep it fresh though.
  5. havent encountered screen tearing. it does slow down here and there but not often. theres also some pop in.
  6. i've owned all of them. and while sm2 STILL has its own perks...most likely the story. I was not as addicted to that game as I am to this one. I've been playing for 12 hours and still haven't beaten it. (which i beat sm2 under quicker time on my first playthrough)
  7. YES YES YES very happy. worth every penny for me. even with its flaws. if your scared of buying it...i recommend at least renting it. don't let Greg screw you out of an awesome game. there is NO way in hell this is as bad as superman returns, the incredible hulk, iron man, and sonic the hedgehog. NO freakin way!

Im glad I dodged this bullet.
I'm glad you spoke up. Because I will make some very good points as well. :cwink:

IGN gave GTA 4 a 10. why is that relevant? Because you encounter the SAME problems he smashed WOS for.

He says the game is repetitive.
GTA 4 involves driving to X location killing X bad guy, and escaping.
Don't get me started about how long it took to drive back if you fail the mission. checkpoints would have been nice.

GTA 4 was released broken. It needed a patch to prevent it from freezing end of story. It may not have affected many of you on here that have bought it. but how about the people who rented it and it stopped them from playing it while Rockstar made the patch? that rendered their rental useless because "it works in the shops ps3 it should work in yours."

I loved GTA 4 but it was definitely not perfect.WOS has its problems as well but it is still a fun game.

story isn't top notch but everything else that is there is done well.

the coolest thing is catching a civiallain out of an exploding car and webbing them to saftey all during combat.

this game is unique and thats what makes it really fun.

now for the true bad....

Spider-man's voice acting is bad to start out with (it gets better as the game goes on.) but they STILL could have hired someone else that would have suited the game much better.

story is kinda flatline. its there....but everythings just kinda happening. theres no real personal emotion to it. even though venom has some morals, in this game its kinda like "venoms evil accept it!"

but its not a hard story to follow at all. unless your ******ed. its just that you don't find yourself caring that much about these characters sometimes....and if you do care...well than its because your actively reading the comics.

the combat is well done though. you have to practice. if you button mash you'll suck. same thing with Ninja Gaiden. the cool moves take practice. (the system isnt hard to learn.)

Another review by Team Xbox. They scored it even lower with 5.1. I'll still rent it though and form my own opinion on the game.

I havent played WoS yet, but this is alot different. Every game is repetitive to a certain degree. GTA IV certainly was. But the difference comes in the fact that there is ALOT of variation and other stuff going on that the repetitiveness is overlooked and/or becomes inconsequential. If it involved having to do the same mission types 4 times in a row, that would have made it more noticeable and boring. Fortunetly for the game, things were spread out and the player was given alot of freedom, so they arent doing the same thing one after the other. It seems as if WoS isnt structured the same way and that is where the problem lies

I may give it a rental. I agree with you on GTA4 though, quite possibly the most overrated game this gen, I think San Andreas Is a much better and engrossing experience. Ive become very jaded with this gen, when a game gets consistently low scores I tend to stay away and when a game gets consistently fantastic scores I grow suspicious because most of these games (Halo 3, Assassin's Creed, Resistance, GTA4 ect.) are average at best. The only two games Ive played this gen that even come close to living up to the hype are Bioshock and MGS4 and those games have the same major flaw: They're both painfully easy.

Alot of GTA 4 was basically go here kill this person escape. I loved that game, and trust an owner of gta 4 and wos. there is almost no difference in mission structure nor how long it takes to get new ones.

WOS starts out slow but the game definitely opens up to different mission types.

minor spoiler

one mission has you protecting a court house while fighting off mechs and bombers.

you have to strap the bomb to your back and dump it off to the bomb squad before it blows up.

somewhat major spoiler

something happens during the game that causes the police to shoot at spidey during gameplay if they see him.

missions do change up, combat does open up. situations in combat do not stay the same so you are always constantly learning to adjust.

dont get me wrong this is NOT the best game I've ever played by any means. but its still very much fun.

definitely :applaud, I agree. your right, all games have flaws.

assassins creeds story was VERY dissapointing to me and that game got a 9.
i can strongly compare assassins creed to WoS in gameplay design. its very similar but more fun to use the acrobatics and fight because they are done very well.

in that game you can spam the counter to kill people. in WoS you have to switch up your attacks or the bosses adapt since it has dynamic difficulty.

(GTA4) San andreas and vice city are great example in comparison to sm2 and WOS.

GTA 4 is a definite step backwards gameplay CONTENT wise. but what it does....it does well. same with WoS.

but i don't blame you if you rent it. Just play it.....don't let that bull crap review let you think this is a bad game. cause its definitely not.

He did make some good points. but I definitely don't think his actual review lined up with his score. from what he was saying i imagined it would have gotten a 7 or maybe a 6.5. but c'mon a 5.5? :whatever:

5.5 isn't even the lowest. Team Xbox actually gave it a 5.1

They scored it overall pretty low.

- Gameplay: 5.8
- Graphics: 5.2
- Audio: 4.5
- Longevity: 5.4
- Innovation: 4.0

maybe if you just count the story missions but you arent taking into account all the side missions, and other stuff that the developers put into the game to pass the time by

Now that I can agree on bc that game was repetitive in every sense of the word and unlike GTA IV there was not alot of variation and extras to make up for it

Since I don't have a xbox, i really can't say i use that site...:csad:

I was using ign as a reference because i could recall ign's scores for all the games i referenced off the top of my head. :cwink:

whats really sad more than anything else is letting a REVIEW, affect your own thoughts about something. if you go back to my other thread where i originally posted the ign review, you'll see that i didnt dismiss it until i actually played the game.
