Hey, I'm still trying to get my hands on the game. The review doesn't affect that. I decided from the start that I would rent it first, no amazing review would've had an effect on that decision.

But I probably won't get my hands on it till next week, because I've got too much to do. I don't feel like popping it in for only 1-2 hours after I get home from work.

maybe if you just count the story missions but you arent taking into account all the side missions, and other stuff that the developers put into the game to pass the time by

Now that I can agree on bc that game was repetitive in every sense of the word and unlike GTA IV there was not alot of variation and extras to make up for it

Let's put it this way, I've been playing for 12 hours straight and JUST reached act II.

red spidey move list is 65 percent complete
black suit is 15 percent complete.

GTA 4 had plenty of chase/seek/kill missions with different flavors. sure you had the dating system and the friends system and all that....but the killer thing that you have to realize that ALOT of the depth that went into the game....wasn't gameplay.

the game lacks true depth in that regard. there really aren't that many weapon types. im sure the game would have gotten a lower score if it were not for the multiplayer.

the variations you might be speaking of are mainly made up of one instance and boom its over.

non spoiler (locating a target with your cellphone.) its a great game. i promise you i love it also. probably a little more than WOS. i am not saying WOS is better...just by comparison it doesn't fall as short as you might think.

WE'RE GAMERS THATS HOW WE ROLL!!! :woot:

thats all im pissed about. don't let that greg cat cheat you out of a good experience, dont dismiss it as a bad game BEFORE you play it.

THANK YOU!

I haven't been here guys because I've been playing this game to-death. Real quick review. Love it. Fricken love it so far. More than SM1, SM2, SM3 or USM. More than HULK UD. It is one of the best games I've ever played. The swinging is amazing. I fricken love this game. Well off to go play some more. 360 must be burning up by now... :D

thats funny....because if i remember right you were one of the posters that felt this game was going to suck hard.

bet you didnt know IGN gave it a 5.5/10 and team xbox gave it a 5.1/10

now does it deserve that?

EDIT: DUDE! watch the review....you will laugh trust me. especially when you see how the guy in the video is playing.

Um...I am reading reports all over other boards that the Wii version of this game are getting 6 alternate costumes that the other versions don't get.

I have read that both the Ben Reilly Spider-Man costume and Spidey 2099 are unlockable. That sucks for the other versions if true. Maybe DLC later down the road.

Someone on gamefaqs said he unlocked Spider-Carnage.

Yea, so far I have read Cosmic Spidey, Spider-Man 2099, Spider-Carnage, and Ben Reilly Spider-Man....and I'm sure I read Iron-Spider somewhere....but I can't be sure.

From everything I have read, it seems the Wii also has a decent version, and not just a PS2 port, but a version that they put some great work into. They must have learned from the travisty that was SM3.

I'm playing the Wii version, and so far it really seems to be exactly like the PS3/360 versions, just with not so great graphics. I keep flicking my Wiimote and keep making that homing web attack. But I don't know what the next-gen versions are like, so I don't know if it's missing anything.

One thing I did like about the Wii SM3 was the remote web slinging, which really did make the swinging more fun. I'm hoping the web swinging in this is as good if not better. I have read that the game works much better than SM3 did and seems to not have the glitches the other did either.

They changed a little thing as far as swinging is concerned. In SM3 you need to use the wiiimote and nunchack. It was really fun and made you feel more like spidey because you used both hands. In WOS all you need is the Wiimote. Takes a bit of the fun factor out.

And the camera is a pain in the ass IMO. Because you need the D-Pad to move the camera. But it's okay in battle, because everytime you lock-onto an enemy, the camera automatically adjusts.

Whaaat... the Wii version gets unlockable costumes but the PS/360 version doesn't? That's sort of a deal breaker for me, as I'm a sucker for alternate costumes in superhero games.

I'm still very much looking forward to playing this, but I'd much rather spend $5 on a 5 day rental than $60 on it when I'd probably be done with it in five days anyway.

Hey 0neDisturbedSOB (or anyone who has the damn game),

Here's what I want to know about the game:

1. How big is the sandbox (Manhattan)?
2. I want a detailed description of the webslinging:
- Is it faster than Spider-Man 3's (that was a disappointment), can you get going really fast?
- do you have a boost?
- hows the momentum?
- what kind of acrobatics can you pull and what buttons do you press to pull them off?
- any duel web?
3. How's the combat?
4. Is it really that repetative and, if so, is it something that can be over looks because the combat and move set is so damn fun?
5. How are the graphic?
- Screen tearing...does it happen much / does it really effect the fun of the game?
- Is there much framerate slowdown? Does it effect the fun of the game?
6. Have you played SM2, SM3, USM? How would you compare Web of Shadows to them?
7. Most importantly: Is it fun? do the pros outweigh the cons? are you happy you bought it?

Thanks in advance :)

Played some more last night so I'm better suited to answer the questions you asked me:

1) The city is huge, and IMO looks just as good as it did in Spider-Man 3. This time around much of the city is destructible. I got nailed by this big ass gang member and he sent me flying down the street crashing through whatever I hit. The animation of Spider-Man stopping himself is pretty cool, he uses his "adhesiveness" to slow down the momentum.

2) The web swinging in the game is the best I've encountered in a Spider-Man game. When you swing you can gain some good momentum, and as you level up he's able to go faster and further. I love that you can turn around corners without having to shoot another webline. It's seamless. As you collect these spider icons you level up, as you level up your faster, stronger, etc. It automatically upgrades your swinging with each level.

3) So far the combat seems to be a lot different than the last few games that have come out which is a welcomed change for me. The classic suit relies on speed attacks, while the black costume relies more on power and damage. The upgrades are pretty good, and I love that you can transition from one enemy to another without having to stop and re-aim your camera....the animations are awesome too.

4) It is repetitive, but most superhero games are. In the beginning it's Luke Cage telling you to go stop this gang, and go save these people. It acts as sort of a long training session.

5) Graphics look solid to me. I haven't noticed any screen tearing yet so it might be something that happens later or whatever, but nothing on my end. Some of the models look a bit weird, but it's not something I would call "bad." I really like the animations for Spider-Man's moves while fighting or swinging....they nailed the poses.

6) I own all of the Spider-Man games since the ones on PSone. I loved the movie games (Spider-Man 3 was boring, but still better than the movie), but Ultimate Spider-Man has been my favorite because of the look and comics. I would say Web of Shadows stacks up nicely to any of them. It looks better than any of them, and has a more complete combat system than the others, and like I said earlier, the swinging is the best yet.

7) I'm glad I bought it, then again I bought Iron Man (before I knew how frustrating it is). If you're a Spider-Man fan I'm sure you'll enjoy it simply because it's not based on any particular movie or comic storyline. They've nailed Spidey's movement and mannerisms, and while some of the voice acting isn't the best, it's also not the worst I've heard. I think it's a solid game, and it's certainly better than Spider-Man 3 (movie and game).

Oh, and in response to IGN complaining about the lack of depth pertaining to MJ and Spidey's relationship. I think it's pretty well established that MJ and Peter are either married or a couple since this is based in the comics universe. I don't think they needed to go back and explain the back story for all of these characters. Spider-Man makes reference to being bitten when he was a "kid" so it's obvious he's older in this game. If you're a TRUE fan of the source material then you should be able to fill in the blanks as it relates to MJ and Peter's relationship. I mean hell, if they're going to go back and have to explain it for everyone then why not go all the way back and break down his origin for the non-fans? I think they count on the people playing this to be fans and know what's been going on.

That's my 2 cents. Hope it helps.

I agree even Movie fans only doesn't need all that info. No matter how you got into Spidey you'll know about Pete and MJ.

Yeah, I was worried about alot of things. The only thing I might still think could have been alot better was the opening with Peter and MJ. You know what I'm taling about.

And no, there is no way it should get a 5.5. But I was also one of the few people that loved SM3...so...go figure. The learning curve on the swing takes a while but when you get good and collect alot of those spider icons it's gets really addicting. You can get really fast. I'm level 7 or 8 now.

All the little things that make the swing so differnent than the last ones made it so hard to get everything down. But I think they gave us so much with it is really what makes it hard. He can climb his webs, bounce off walls if you hold the jump button on a wall, he can dodge now, if you tap jump and hit a direction you can control exactly where he jumps on up down left or right, swing vertically on polls, and if you time your jumps right you jump even higher (took me forever to figure that one out)

I love it. But I can see anyone else that haven't played the others having a hard time with the swing system.

I FRICKEN HATE IGN! THEY NEED TO USE SPOILER WARNINGS! HE JUST RUINED A HUGE PART! I FRICKEN HATE THOSE GUYS! I'm so done with them.

AGREED

oops....my bad dude. I totally forgot about the huge spoiler in the review. :csad:

I just thought he made some pretty bad points and complaints about the game...

And here we...go

In case you are like me and rarely look at who a post is by and rather just read what they have to say, I've been posting in this thread about how disappointed I was in WoS. It was my most hyped game of '08, but after reading some of the crippling problems in the game I decided I wasn't even going to buy it, and rather just wait for a rental.

But being a Spidey ****e eventually won out, and now here I sit typing this, getting ready to play it for the first time.

I have very mixed expectations now, as I've read very mixed reviews. I want this game to be good, but I'm not going to delude myself and make problems out to be lesser than they really are. At the same time, I'm not going to be overly harsh on anything because of my disappointment in how much better this game could have (potentially) been.

Anyway, I'll be posting a "mini review" (i.e. thorough first impressions) in this thread later. Hopefully it can help some of you other people out who are still on the fence.

I've been reading Spider-Man comics for over 20years, so I think I more than qualify as a "Spider-fan." Having said that, I do enjoy this game, and I am glad I bought it. It isn't without it's flaws, but IMO the good outweighs the bad hands down. To be honest with you, the biggest problem I have with the game is the really, really bad box art cover. It's terrible. It looks like the cover to some cheesy 80's movie about street justice.

Spider-Man: Streets of Rage

"It's payback; this time, it's for real!"
