Splinter Cell: ConViction

I played for about 20 minutes. Didn't get past the point where i had to save the scientist before i had to leave for class. Controls are fluid and the combat is super satisfying. For those worried about the game turning into a run n gun, i wouldnt. You cant take many hits at all. You really gotta use that Mark and Execute strategically. Cant wait for the full game.

I beat the entire demo by running up to every enemy and pressing B. I did not fire a single bullet at anything that wasn't from an execution animation, except for the one time they make you perform a mark and execute.

Demo's pretty good. The controls are certainly alot smoother than previous games.

I have a hard time believing that, or maybe there is a big difference between realistic and the other difficulties. I tried doing that a few times but was shot pretty quickly. Maybe i didn't break the enemies up enough.

I did it on both normal and realistic difficulties. You just have to run in and out of their line of sight a few times on realistic once you reach the tunnels. The enemies being grouped up actually makes it easier sometimes because you can take them out faster. When they stand in groups of two one will get shocked and not fire right away. The reason why it is so easy is because the enemeis don't advance on your position. If they see you next to cover they will walk right up to it and stop right in front, allowing you to melee them and roll right back into the shadows.

I also played to demo in a more "gears of war fashion". I didn't sneak and just shot everyone and used cover. That was extremely easy.

Sounds good to me. I just want to make Sam do cool stuff. I don't care if it's easier than the average difficulty level for action games.

Haha yea. It depends on how ya play. The franchise has always been like that. Iv always been a hand to hand stealth player in the past titles. I would rarely use my equipment other than like the light jammer. I would rarely fire my gun. Here i plan to go much more hardcore, grabbing dudes as human shields, using the mark and execute, even if all i need to do is run up to everyone and press B, thats just damn boring.

I almost never used equipment other than the ring airfoils to take out guys who were far away. I actually tried not to kill at all as Sam, but of course that's gonna go out the window for Conviction given how angry Sam is and how fun the "mark and execute" feature looks. I'm gonna be marking foreheads left and right. :awesome:

I can kill a man 15 different ways with a drinking straw

17 if I leave the wrapper on

Ha, I'm just the opposite of you guys. I relied almost entirely on gadgets. I never made it a point not to kill guys, but my guns were for emergencies only.

Hah, yea i only killed dudes when i had to. As made evident by the demo, i wont be doing that this time around.

I loved the demo. The gameplay is fantastic and the mark and excute is amazing. I really liked the interrogation, really simplistic but brutal as hell.

Yeah I like how you have to earn mark and executes.

Yea the mark and execute is a fantastic idea. Id love to see the next Hitman incorporate some form of it. It's super satisfying to mark two guys then grab another as a human shield then immediately putting 2 bullets into the marked mercs. Love that system.

Yeah, it's pretty good. The balance on it is great, because your forced to earn them, and only to a point because you can only max out at three. I can see it being a feature other games use.

I really liked the demo. The pace is alot faster, faster than any other Splinter Cell game before. But, I can see this game taking heat ala the same level as Double Agent. There are changes that have been made, and I don't know how I'll feel about it until I play and finish the full game.

Just curious, but has anyone been able to ghost through the demo? I'm pretty sure it's impossible, and we're not meant to, but just curious.

Loved the demo. It feels a lot more scaled down and more action-oriented than previous Splinter Cell games, but once I got used to the controls, it was a lot of fun. I played it normally the first time and then I tried Flash Facts' method of just meleeing everyone. FF must be a lot better at meleeing people than I am, 'cause I made it through the first bit okay but got cut down by crossfire really quickly once I went inside the building.

The only part of the demo I didn't really like is how slow you move when you're crouched. That used to be variable in earlier games, but it seems your speed is pretty set when crouched in Conviction. But that's a minor nitpick.

Yeah, the crouch walk was pressure sensitive before. I think it's part of the effort of keeping the pace fast. Same reason why Sam can fly across a pipe in 5 seconds now...the dude is seriously amped. I've heard that it is possible to ghost through the demo, but it's impossible w/o help. Be it Krav Maga or gadgets...enemy contact is necessary in the demo.

Interesting enough, I keep hearing that the demo is of an old build and not a direct piece of the final.

Btw, it's damn old...and features Hobo Sam, but I had never seen this video until today. Looking at the video, I'm more intrigued with what they were cooking up...but after playing the demo and looking at this video, it makes sense why it took so long for ConViction to get this far.

They pretty much built a new game from the ground up, then scrapped it to build another game...basically. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KytwEHjjsbI

But the Conviction crouch walk seems to be slower than the fastest crouch walk of previous games. That's what confused me.

What do you mean by ghosting?

Like when two people spoon while working with clay?

Yeah, the crouch walk now seems to be 100% silent but not as fast.

Being a Ghost is SC (or any stealth game, ie: MGS) usually means no detections. Some expand it to no alerts, no kills, no knockouts. You go through the level, and leave as little a trace as possible and so that it's as if you were never there. Being a ghost.

It varies, so you ghost where you can. The iceland boat level in DA, for example, you are required to atleast knockout enemies so being a ghost through that would just require no alerts. I just saw some videos on youtube, and I'm happy to see that being a ghost in the ConViction demo is possible. It's different, you need to leave more traces...and be pretty creative with the emp gadgets.

Ah, okay. Yeah, you're forced to melee one guy and mark and execute the two next dudes at the beginning, but I guess you could conceivably not touch anyone else in the demo level.

Yep. After that opening, you can get inside the building, in the room, up the pipe and down in the tunnels all the way to the scientist without touching a guard or being "detected".

Sam is more like Batman now. Atleast, from the Ghost walkthroughs I've seen for the ConViction demo. The guards will know he's around, just not know where he is exactly. So they're walking around expecting to get jumped.

The level design allows for it, really. There's like three paths to get past the fence area, so that tells me they've kept the stealth fans in mind. Like pat said, it doesn't seem like the game is going to make you be a run-and-gun player.

Being that the game was delayed to fix the AI. I wonder if this demo is before those fixes or after? Id assume before because its not like the dev's decided one day to give us a demo and then the next week there was one available. It takes longer to get a demo that the publisher wants to release.
