EXCLUSIVE EARLY REVIEW: 'Transformers' blows Spidey, Sparrow and Surfer away!

by Steve Mason

When the dust settles from this 2007 summer of sequels, one movie will stand above all others. For originality and excitement and action and special effects and flat-out fun, the hands-down winner is Transformers (Dreamworks/Paramount). When all is said and done, I'll be surprised if this testosterone-injected thrill ride doesn't finish as the top-grossing movie of the year.

A generation of boys (and some girls) grew up on Transformers toys, cartoons and comic books in the '80s, and those same fans, now in their late 20s and early 30s, are ready to introduce their kids to this major touchstone of their collective childhood. Michael Bay was the ideal choice to direct the new movie. He can choreograph action and "blow stuff up" with the best of 'em, and he's always been on the cutting edge of movie special effects because of his stake in Digital Domain. On top of everything that Bay bring, however, Steven Spielberg's fingerprints are unmistakable. As Executive Producer, he has managed to inject into Transformers the sweetness, humor and sense of wonder that are the hallmarks of his best work...

...The movie flies at breakneck pace toward a robot battle royale. It's Optimus Prime, Bumblebee and the Autobots vs. Megatron and the Decepticons, and this is Bay at his best. The effects are an astounding whirr of changing forms and perfectly choreographed transitions, in the midst of an incredible chase, filled with explosions and blasts and detonations. In addition to the visual effects people, the sound guys and sound editors will also be recognized at the Oscars. The squealing of tires, the metal-on-metal scraping and the rumbling of oncoming giant robots makes for a visceral, one-of-a-kind moviegoing experience.

All I have to say is WOW!!!!

And look at the B.O. prediction at the bottom. I won't say I told you so!

I will not be suprised with that B.O. Transformers are gonna rule the summer. Nothing but positive reviews so far.

Really hoping for the top two to be TF and SM3. TF, imo, from everything I've seen, read, etc. looks to be a film that really deserves to be in the top three. If that happens.

I've noticed that NOBODY thus far has said this movie DRAGGED at any point. I think that's a great sign.

Wow...that is quite a prediction. I hope he's right...that would be awesome if Transformers blows away the competition like that.

But there's still one HYOOJ obstacle.

That review^ promises everything that Shia, Spielberg and Bay has said them selves about the film!!!!

Boy, this is gonna be goooood!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think this film will hit with the same impact (if not BIGGER) than that of the first Jurassic Park!!!

Dude, I'm not the least bit worried that Harry Potter 5 will be bigger than TF! HP5 is just gonna be more of the same ****!!! TF will trumble over EVERYTHING this summer has had to offer of blockbusters! It's gonna be UNREAL!!!:woot: :woot: :woot:

HP5 doesn't look ANY cooler than the previous films, it really doesn't... like I said, just more of the same.

Keep acting blind. I'm all for hoping this movie does good...but I'm not going to ignore the monster franchise that is Harry Potter.

I really like some of the Harry Potter films but Im not that thrilled about watching him make out with an asian girl and fight a skinny bald man who cant smell. Not this time around anyways. Not HP or Die Hard, TF is the one must-see left this summer and that is the way most people(non TF fans meaning) i know feel :trans:

Jurassic Park was outta left field though. No one expected something like that, nor did it receive as much press as this movie.

Now where I will agree with you is that it may surprise people like Jurassic Park did. So both will be winners in the end. I am getting the feeling that this is starting to get bigger than any of us imagined.

Potter's still young. Transformers spans a few generations of fans. so it's safe to bet it'll have a fighting chance against the scarred wizard.

Anyone that thinks Harry Potter isn't a big franchise is special needs. Those movies are REALLY great, and the books are even better. I'm not gonna feed this drivel anymore though/.

Harry Potter has female appeal...something Transformers does not have in abundance. There are no big male leads in this movie to draw the female audience like Pirates, Harry Potter or even SM3 (Tobey and James have quite a following). You CANNOT count out the female audience. They took a lot of business away from SR last year by going to see Devil Wears Prada instead. Transformers is still going to have to fight an uphill battle.

Harry Potter?

I hope the Transformers rips out Harry Potter's optics at the box office.

Shocked to see Devil Wears Prada make $325 Million worldwide. Just goes to show that some stuff has "fangirls" just like the type of stuff we debate on the boards. I wonder if they bicker and argue here about shoes and stuff like we do here on the boards.

Anywho, I am really stoked about Harry Potter. Having both those movies come out around the same exact time is non-sensical, but it definitely is for the benefit of everyone. That and I hear this upcoming movie should be the best HP of the bunch.

plus the book is poping up soon... it will rattle the geekyHP fans into a sort of orgasm then will bring in the $$$

DIE HARD IS DIE HARD....lol
