Discovery Star Trek: Discovery - Part 1

I did always wonder why the turbolift on the Constitution Class wasn't central to the bridge. Starfleet Engineering Corps must've had a few too many Whiskey's when they drew up the design for the ships.

In the original blueprints the turbolifts are indeed positioned central in the saucer section, but it's the bridge that is set at an angle. This was because the viewscreen is a screen and not a window, so it doesnt matter if the bridge isn't facing directly forwards.

Abrams went the window/windscreen route in the reboot.

That would still throw me right off if I knew about it; just imagine being on a train facing backwards or sideways but travelling in one direction. I suppose the difference being that there's no motion in space (or shouldn't be at least as everything experienced in ship would be via artificial gravity). Still, an odd concept. Why not just design the bridge straight like any normal person? :p

Well it isn't a huge angle to be fair. Say the lift is 12 0'clock, direct forward is 6, the bridge would be pointing at between 4 & 5.

For motion the ships use inertia dampeners too so you wouldn't really notice the difference.

As to why? Well I don't think there is a physical reason, but maybe just a visual one for filming purposes. Might be they just thought it looked better on TV back then, lol.

Had no idea who Queen Po was. Only know now because of Afterbuzz's Discovery show, lol.

Who is she? When did she ever appear before? I don't recall an episode with her.

And why is Spock staying on Discovery? He'll obviously have to not go to the future because he's got to be on Kirk's Enterprise. What changes his mind or prevents him?

So I guess this will be the explanation for why there's no Spore Drive in all the previous shows because it ended up in the future?

I can't see this being the reason. If Discovery is trapped in the future (with her crew) then Season 3 will be them flying around a future where there is literally no life to explore, unless the future they end up in is a totally new/different one (because they beat control) in which case they'll be flying around in a far inferior ship and will be blasted apart by the first rebel Klingon ship they encounter. I find it hard to believe they're going to leave L'Rell and Tyler out of the show too, and as neither of them will be on the Discovery... I'm more willing to bet that this big plan of theirs backfires, and it's only Michael that is somehow lost, to then make her grand return in the S3 premier.

She's only appeared in one of the "Short Treks" before this episode.
I haven't watched them. I thought I'd missed an entire episode.

What if Spock does go to the future, but that undetonated photo torpedo that's sticking out of the Enterprise bridge in Burnham's visions is Spock in a capsule somehow brought back to the past and lodged into Enterprise?

Yeah I haven't seen them either...but I knew I hadn't missed an ep. Had me thinking this was a character from season one that I'd forgotten lol.

I did not say that. You quoted the wrong person.

Man it is hard to believe that next weeks episode is the Season Finale. To me it feels like we still have more episodes to go, but I guess that has a lot to do with this series going at such a fast pace. I can't wait to see how it ends though, especially after this weeks episode.

I absolutely loved the Enterprise design! I liked how the bridge looked like TOS but at the same time was more modern and realistic. It was nothing like the newer movie bridge and I appreciated that. Too much white and shine for my liking. I also loved the scene with the evacuation of Discovery, the bridges between ships looked so cool.

Such a fantastic episode, but I wasn't expecting it to end where it did. I thought the actual battle would be the cliffhanger. I cannot wait for next week's finale! I'm really curious where they're going to go. I'd actually enjoy them going into the future and plotting their own storyline free from prequel based storytelling. It could work I think. Maybe at least have them stranded there for a while, then get Spock back so it lines up with canon.

I think the movie bridge is much bigger and more spacious isn't it? And doesn't have any of the red and black trimming. It's meant to emulate the Apple store according to JJ Abrams, but then won't that look dated itself?

Really enjoyed the latest episode and really enjoying this season as a whole. The only thing I'm not looking forward to is saying goodbye to Pike. I feel there's still so much left to explore there.

Anyway, the Queen character reminded me of May... only less irritating. I liked the character design though.

The Abrams Enterprise mainly bears a basic similarity in external shape. That ungainly ship is more than twice the size of the original and actually bigger than the 1701-E. The bridge, engine room, shuttle bay etc, are all bigger.

And I'm another who ain't a fan of the lens flare happy Apple store bridge.

OMG I never thought about it before, but it *does* look like an Apple store! It's just way too flashy to me. Honestly I either prefer a more battle ready looking command center like Discovery's bridge or something comfy looking like the bridge of TNG's Enterprise. I imagine we'll never see another bridge as cozy looking as TNGs again since it would look extremely useless on a starship, but then again the Enterprise D was more of a family friendly cruise liner to some degree. Remember all the carpet?

While I agree that I enjoyed the look of TNG, DS9 and VOY bridges and interiors, you've got to think they had to switch it up. Plus the TOS bridge always looked like crap to me, something a fan could build inside a garage.. not something I'd expect to see 300 years from now. Plus I appreciate how they took the core of the elements of the TOS bridge and made it appropriately grander (the red accents, seating, captain's chair, etc.). But to each their own.

How Do You Improve on Perfection?

'Discovery''s production designer, Tamara Deverell, reveals how she brought the U.S.S. Enterprise into 2019.

The original bridge looked more black. This new bridge looks more grey/ steel blue.

Also, why didn't that Admiral wear the Enterprise uniform while she was acting as Captain? Pike wore the Discovery uniform while he held that position.

I don’t think they’ve quite got the uniform codes quite decided on yet. You’d think an admiral would be wearing the latest colours as standard anyway, although there were a few admirals in DS9 that wore red when Sisko etc were wearing Grey.

Starfleet is at war with an AI and fight for the future, no time for a fashion show :)

That can't be the case though, because the Admiral had been on Enterprise for a while, whereas Pike doesn't have much time to get changed back into Enterprise colours at the end when Discovery is going to the future, but he still does. The Admiral had plenty of time to put on an Enterprise uniform while simply minding the store.

If Burnham is such a hero in the Star Trek universe, why don't they have a ship named after her? The USS Burnham? Or maybe a Burnham-class Starship?

I'm going with the theory that Admirals can wear what they damn well please, and she simply prefers the blue. :p Per my previous post, Admiral Ross (DS9) wore old style uniforms whilst Sisko wore new.

Do we have a USS Archer? USS Kirk? USS Spock? USS Pike? Do we have an Archer Class, Kirk Class, Spock Class, Pike Class?

In short, no we don't (although I may recall a USS Archer being mentioned at some point in ST: Nemesis). There may well be a USS Burnham, but we've just not encountered it yet; the galaxy is a big place, and the ships of the Federation get about quite a bit.

Alternately, maybe she just isn't that big a hero? Or maybe the events unfolding here simply aren't made public? I doubt Starfleet is going to want to throw S31's business around like public knowledge, and they're not going to want the rest of the galaxy to know that they (humanity) was primarily responsible for nearly wiping out all sentient life.
