why is that such a surprise? Politicians have been concerned about videogame practices for like 25 years

They've been concerned about video games' potential relation to violence in children. I expect that from politicians. It's just funny and unexpected that lootboxes have drawn the attention of politicians. What's next? Legislation against releasing games that need day one patches? :p

The issue is that it's gambling and deliberately predatory. A day one patch isn't the same thing. To steal someone else's line: they wouldn't let Joe Camel sell kids cigarettes and they're not going to let Star Wars sell kids gambling and that's exactly what happens speaking my professional experience working in triple A customer support, I used to get calls about kids charging hundreds of dollars to their parents cards buying these things for Overwatch and any of the EA Sports titles. This has been a problem for a few years now.

your correct, but this is a different animal as the others have said. but they have been after some certain games for the wrongest of reasons and other time's depending on the situation for good reason. but it's the former we see al too often in for the wrongest rea,son when it's certain adults that should take responciblity for them selves among other thing's.

Ok here's what I got from EPN.tv it's a video clip of the same politian making the statment. below

Battlefront 2 Might be Outlawed? - The Rundown - Electric Playground

Today in the Rundown, we have more bad news for Star Wars Battlefront 2, and how it might be outlawed in an entire US state. We also have some brighter news with new DLC for Battlefield 1, the latest on the new Star Wars movie The Last Jedi, an early look at the next Jurassic Park film, two new weapons for PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, and finally, details on what Square Enix has planned for the Nintendo Switch!

Physical sales are down 70% in Japan. If this is applicable all over the world, and UK sales indicate that it might, this is not going to be pretty.

Greed killed a potentially good game.

I'm thoroughly enjoying the game, but this is so amazing to witness.
They got away with the "first" Battlefront in how they overcharged for it,
now it's just all coming back around to bite them in the rear end. They never
should have had the whole loot box mechanism to start with; or, at least, charge
for it. I don't see how anyone thought that was going to be a good idea.

I can't wait to see what comes of this whole situation.

I do see the irony in the government focusing so much attention on this as opposed to....other stuff going on.

Priorities man. They managed to **** Battlefront up twice.

This isn't getting that much attention, it's the rep from Hawaii and governments outside of the US. The fact that it's getting talked about at all makes the coverage of this seem bigger than it actually is.

EA is trying exploit addiction for profit the same way Marlboro and drug dealers do. The real issue right now is their allowed to sell to children where Marlboro is not. It's a big ****ing deal.

On the plus side, hopefully this means that Disney drops EA and finds another company to make Star Wars games

Rocksteady would be pretty awesome

All this discussion and repercussions so far have been delicious. It's like watching a new episode everyday of your favorite series.

One of the states down here has determined loot boxes fall under the Australian definition of gambling. They can't do anything to prevent the companies from putting the system in the games, but they can ensure the rating on the games is R18+, which means adults only.

*Edit*

Crap, missed a curse word in the video.

Look up Skill Up's video on Youtube "The Untold History of EA's Long (and Rich) Pay-2-Win Love Affair". It's well researched and informative. Hope his predictions come true. The Star Wars license being taken away from EA, Andrew Wilson (who's pretty much responsible for this disgusting level of monetization in video games) being removed as CEO of EA, and maybe Overwatch even removing loot boxes, because they apparently don't make that much money off of them anyway.

EA just needs to get rid of the loot box system
and just allow people to spend credits on what
people actually want. It's a quick and easy enough
fix, though the damage is already done.

They need to overhaul the system completely. Your character progression is intrinsically tied to the loot boxes. Which revolves around getting cards to improve your character's abilities, giving you a clear and unfair advantage, when your character is equipped with a bunch of epic cards, that increase your damage by like 30%, or make your shields deplete only half as fast. The entire card system is complete and utter bs.

So the loot boxes and Star Cards need to go. If the it were a PvE only game, I wouldn't mind the stat improving cards. But they have no place in a PvP focused game.

No. They simply need to tie the Star Cards to achievement. The more you play, the better you do, you get stronger. Nothing wrong with that.

Or a cheaper, less complicated solution:

truth be told it's only EA and possbly WB entertaiment games that will be inthe most troble and those that fallowed them . thaosther did just the cosmetic like over watch will be fine. and it's be come the deal of it'snot fare to lump them all over the poor chose /action of a few.

ok so this is what I have for you all today I didn't do this last night cause uhh yeah MHO's shut down and other things I'm dealing with.

So here'swhat the UK said about the loot box deal on why loot box's aren't gambling (Reason being the person gambling has to be able to get what ever they get out of the game erning's wise real life cash out for them selves and get cash for them selves out of those earning's from the game according to the UK Gambling commision) as stated in both the video (from EPN.tv) and article form from PCGN below .

(Special note this same problem will be fall the United states cause the
same Rules applies with the gambiling system there , & same for canada etc.)

It's not that simple. You can't take the current Star Cards as they are and just make them milestone achievements. And there's a lot wrong with it, if you're completely overpowered, just because you've played longer. I don't mind a minor stat improvement, or the choice between different loadouts that you've unlocked, but balance is the key.

Here's an article that talks about them.

Loot Boxes Aside, Battlefront 2's Broken Star Cards Must Be Fixed Before Launch

Past that, some measure of “upgrading” skills feels like it could still be balanced. Upgrading the range of a thermal detonator explosion from 6 meters to 7 meters when fully maxed seems acceptable. Increasing points acquired when using a certain skill from 5 to 9 when upgraded seems alright.

But far too many of Battlefront 2’s upgrades seem like they go totally off the deep end. Forget the fact that you can essentially gamble for them in loot crates. Upgrades like these should not be in a shooter like this to begin with, particularly one that wants to act like it’s for more casual players.

The Heavy trooper has an upgrade that increases the strength of his shield by 40% when fully maxed.

The Specialist has an upgrade that reduces her mine’s cooldown from 30 seconds to 16.

An interceptor has an upgrade that can increase its rate of fire by 20%.

A bomber can get an upgrade that gives it 40% more health.

Boba Fett has an upgrade that reduces his damage taken while using his rockets by 100%.

You get what I’m saying here. Many of the upgrades found in Battlefront 2 are massive power boosts, either offensively or defensively, and they stack on top of one another. In a starfighter, for instance, you can combine maxed fire rate, damage increase and heat sink cards to deal absolutely insane DPS that people without those cards cannot keep up with. You can dump a bunch of maxed cards into a hero that takes them from a nuisance to an unkillable death machine.

With Microtransactions taken out for the moment it might not be pay-to-win anymore, but it's still a broken and unbalanced mess.

I'm already seeing the gap widen.
The newbies are getting slaughtered
by those who have been playing since launch.

The Star Cards need to be simply rewarded by
completing the solo campaign or something along those
lines. It shouldn't be a jump and a hurdle to.

It causes things to be way too even in PvP.
