Red Dead Redemption publisher president defends lockboxes

Not everyone in the video game industry is shying away from lockboxes or denouncing them outright. Take-Two Interactive President Karl Slatoff took the side of the ESA by saying that he doesn’t consider lockboxes gambling and that the Red Dead Redemption 2 studio will continue using microtransactions going forward.

“The whole gambling regulator thing, we don’t view that sort of thing as gambling. Our view of it is the same as the ESA statement for the most part,” Slatoff said during a recent confererence. “That’s going to play its course, but in terms of the consumer and the noise you hear in the market right now, it’s all about content […] You can’t force the consumer to do anything. You try to do your best to create the best experience you possibly can to drive engagement. And driving engagement creates value in entertainment. That’s just how it’s always been and always will be.”

As the conversation over lockboxes continues to ramp up,

I never wanted EA to have the Star Wars licence, but I doubt a petition will make a difference. Only thing that could make Disney take think twice about EA is the furore over lootboxes creating enough bad PR around the time of release of The Last Jedi, but I doubt even then they would pull it. We'll probably see paid lootboxes back as early as just after the opening weekend of the film and EA will back to their usual tricks.

I doubt any negative PR about the game would effect The Last Jedi,
even in the slightest. It's the future of Star Wars gaming that's on the line.

Look's like they are getting their wish

For those of you who are actually playing this, is it worth getting the standard edition on PC?

I hope that picks up steam. The video game industry is getting out of control with loot boxes, season passes, and DLC. Having the government sucker-punch them in the face would be a real treat.

And honestly, I've only had this game for about three weeks and I'm about ready to uninstall it. Broken gameplay mechanics and Galactic Assault is laggy as hell. Enormous waste of money.

If they do decide to not reintroduce them they're probably hoping that giving in to players on this game will cause a lot of the uproar about lootboxes to die down and get lawmakers attention off of it.

Took the plunge and bought it Wednesday night. I’m only just now getting off Endor, but hopefully I’ll have more time to play through the campaign this weekend, maybe some of the other modes as well.

Anybody else having an issue with the game making them restart the campaign over and over again?

Should I buy this game or wait for the drama to cool down?

I would wait until the progression system has been re-worked, confirmation that Microtransactions won't return, and they fix the servers and take care of the bugs.

Definitely play the DLC mission before seeing The Last Jedi. They dovetail into each other nicely.

Yeah, after playing it I would imagine that there is more story to be added in a few months once more people have seen the film.

If all a company like EA wants to make is games filled with micro-transactions; than aren't they already charging us more than $60 for their games? What would be the difference?
