Rebels Star Wars: Rebels

Too me the most interesting sounding characters on Star Wars: Rebels are Kanan Jarrus and Sabine Wren.

P.S How long before ANH does "Rebels" take place?

IGN - Star Wars Rebels: Dave Filoni Discusses the Approach, the Characters and Fan Skepticism
An in-depth interview on what to expect from the animated series.
April 27

At WonderCon last week, shortly after the Star Wars Rebels panel had concluded, I sat down with one of the show’s executive producers, Dave Filoni, to discuss the upcoming Star Wars animated series.

Filoni is now a Star Wars veteran, having recently wrapped up his six-season stint as the supervising director on Star Wars: The Clone Wars, where he worked alongside George Lucas. During our lengthy conversation, Filoni talked about the approach to Rebels — also executive produced by Greg Weisman (Gargoyles, The Spectacular Spider-Man, Young Justice) and Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past) — which is set five years before the original Star Wars film, A New Hope, along with what to expect from the central characters.

We also chatted quite a bit about fan skepticism and adult fans who bristle hearing that Rebels is lighter in tone than The Clone Wars or includes a young teenage boy as one of the heroes - territory Filoni is very familiar with, having faced very similar reaction to The Clone Wars when that series launched.

Great interview, can't wait! They still have not released the date of the "summer" episode yet have they?

The main things he said that made me go yes, we are good is that it's serialized, character story driven show, that's all that matters.

Great interview.

Anyway, I'm perfectly happy with it being "lighter". The OT is far less dark then the PT and also happens to be far better. Despite what many fans seem to believe; dark=/=good.

Nerdist - Dave Filoni Discusses STAR WARS REBELS

Dave Filoni attended WonderCon for the Star Wars Rebels panel, and the executive producer sat down with Nerdist for an in-depth discussion about the upcoming animated series. Rebels focuses on the crew of a spaceship called Ghost; the ragtag bunch includes a droid, a Force-sensitive kid, a Jedi, a Twi’lek pilot, an artistic Mandalorian, and a big purple Lasat called Zeb. Filoni talks about the diverse ensemble cast and the challenges of appealing to new and old fans of Star Wars, and he also dropped a couple exclusive tidbits about the effects on the show and more details about the show’s villain, the Inquisitor.

NERDIST: One thing I am very much looking forward to in Rebels is that we have a group that’s diverse not only in gender but in age and race. Was that a very conscious decision going in or was it more, “we wrote good characters and this is what worked out?”

DAVE FILONI: A little bit of both. You look around at what’s been done, and there are a lot of characters that exist of a certain color, certain personality, and a certain age. You go, “We don’t want to be just Luke Skywalker again. We don’t want to be just a little blonde kid again.” I think George was way ahead of his time to have Leia be a brunette, frankly. My wife always brings that one up.

Nerdist - Vanessa Marshall On Playing Hera Syndulla on STAR WARS REBELS

Every spaceship needs a pilot, and when it comes to getting Ghost around the galaxy in Star Wars Rebels, it’s Hera Syndulla. The kick-butt yet caring Twi’lek is voiced by Vanessa Marshall; You may recognize her from her roles in Young Justice (Black Canary) and The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes (Black Widow). Portraying smart and strong female characters isn’t new for her, but Marshall is very excited to be part of the Star Wars universe. We caught up with her at WonderCon to discuss how she got involved with Rebels and how Hera and her fellow rebels are faring in a universe where the Empire is taking control.

Still, better than this...

Between the art design and that ludicrous energy slingshot Im still not liking what Im seeing. The whole thing just looks like Disney is trying hard to appeal to 6 year olds.
I have to agree. The show may turn out to be widely appealing, but I haven't felt much interest (if any) since it was announced.

I wouldn't worry too much about the energy slingshot. At least, not at this point. I've learned never to trust a trailer, and especially never to trust a poster. Both, especially the latter, can be extremely misleading and are simply marketing tools intended to appeal to its intended audience - and like it or not, the posters aren't aimed at us.

The energy slingshot could very well be omni-present and a major part of the character or it could be a directive from executives for the intention of selling toys and rarely ever used in the show itself. Heck, it could even be outright absent!

Is there any word on whether Dee Bradley Baker will be voicing some of the Stormtroopers? That's something I'm very much curious about regarding Rebels--it's connection to Clone Wars. Will we be seeing Captain Rex and Commander Cody?

XD is a network that prides itself on the little boy demographic. We can hope they age the show up as the audience grows up with it. And the show in general finds its footing. If it lasts that long to do that.

I don't think so at all. People said the same thing about TCW. Dave is a great story teller. I tire of this consistent "Disneyfying" talk. TCW was aimed at kids as well. But was in reality for everyone. I bet after a few episodes just like with TCW it will show its wide appeal. People claimed Snips was designed for kids and little girls and she's a fan favorite now.

Well said. The whole "Disneyfying" allegation that has been flung at Disney throughout this whole process, is frankly ****ing stupid.

It's a stupid complaint, but I find it has a bit more merit in regard to this series, as at least this is animated and on a network aimed at a young audience. I rolled my eyes really hard when a certain Hype member who shall remain nameless gave the same label to the Episode VII cast, overlooking Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Andy Serkis and Max Von Sydow, and instead honing in on the teenage/twenty-something female. SUCH a Disneyfied cast!
