Stephen King's Epic "The Dark Tower" - Part 1

I remember back when Ron Howard was on the project there was a rumor that Jennifer Carpenter was being considered for Susannah. I have no idea if that was true though.

One thing that did bother me about that version though was how, in the concept art, they showed Susannah walking. All things considered though, that version still seemed to be closer to the source material than whatever the hell we're getting.

Jennifer Carpenter as Susannah would have caused outrage perhaps moreso than Elba as Roland. It would give the film the unwanted bad buzz that it doesn't need.

Totally agree on that one; though like I said I don't know if it's true.

casting a white actress as Susannah may restore the racial tension dynamic those two characters are meant to have. If they are both black it would be harder to sell.

Also potential book spoilers:

At the end of the book, i vaguely remember Eddie, Susannah and Jake being killed, but then meeting up in another reality, but not looking the same?Wasn't Oy made into a dog? with that in mind it explains how the film is Rolands last time around even though he looks different it also explain the different looks of each character if it deviates from the books.

Susannah didn't die, she went through a door near the tower and met Eddie and Jake as brothers in another reality. Oy wasn't there either, he stayed with Roland and later died fighting Mordred.

Ah, its been a while since I've read them. The Idea still works though, I really need to re-read them before the film.

I only finished the last book this year, so that's how I remember. Otherwise I would have probably been the same as yourself.

Making Susannah white would be such a massive mistake that the movie would justifiably get ripped apart by pretty much everyone under the sun. Being African-American is integral to her character; she was involved in the Civil Rights Movement and when she develops her split personality, her "Detta" self is VERY distrusting towards white people. To remove all that would be essentially making her a different character.

It's almost an entirely different thing that changing Roland's race. I mean, my main issue there is just that King was very specific about Roland's appearance and how he was sort of a subconscious inspiration for Clint Eastwood's Man with No Name character. So I was hoping for a Roland that matched that description. But in the end, that really doesn't matter as long as Elba is good in the role. But making Susannah white would pretty much be pissing on the source material.

Yeah, I think King himself would put up a big stink if Susannah was white.

another cool thing to mentioned here is that The Soundtrack comes from Junkie XL so i hope he made a Mad Max Fury Road Like OST for The Movie with many drum elements

If they do have Susannah, she should be black. One would think that many black actresses would love to be a part of a major blockbuster tentpole franchise. Whitewashing Susannah would cause major outrage as it would rob a black actress a chance to be in a major Hollywood franchise, of which we have so few of.

Yeah, for sure. I remember Naomie Harris expressed interest in the role a while back; she would make a good Susannah, I think. But my personal favorite for the role is Danai Gurira.

So many badass poses by Elba in that new batch, whipped up a poster from one of them:

Looks like he's still got his right fingers.

Quick question: What rating are they aiming for?

Roland And The CGI Knife?

Here is a photo of Roland and one of the bad guys and if you look close you’ll see that the man has a knife in his back in the first photo (only the handle is sticking out) and then on the second photo it’s gone. On the second photo Roland is also holding in something. Could that be the knife’s handle? We don’t see the blade but maybe, just maybe, they will add a huge blade with CGI later on? What do you think?

Not really crazy about Roland's costume. I'm not sure I'd know it was Wild West era garb if I just saw these pics and didn't know the context.

Mid World isn't reall pure wild west though. It's more of a post apocalypse western setting. Which I feel kinda shows in his clothes.

Considering gunslinger's are supposed to be knights, I'm not too bothered the costume is a little more fancy.

Very cool Salem's Lot reference with Barlow and Straker's.

Don't mind Roland's costume. But still the story they are going for is really bugging me. Why make a sequel story to something most of the audience won't have read?

To me it's like they took the easy way out. This way they can change things to how they want and have the excuse that it's the next go round.

Costume doesn't bother me to much. Just wish it was a bit more worn.
