Steven Spielberg's West Side Story adaptation

Hopefully it will go to VOD soon
Probably by February the latest. Although pretty much every movie goes to VOD/Blu-ray 2-3 months after theatrical release these days anyway.

Yeah, not before February. I can see them wanting to get any last pennies they can when Oscar nominations are announced in a couple of weeks. I think most are banking on this to score a lot of them.

I would be shocked if it doesn't nab quite a few.

Perhaps a Spider-Man cameo would have improved its box office. :crso:

Wait what? Its already out? I havent seen any Trailers or so...i have heard absolutely nothing about this for a while now.
I thought later this year it would come out.

Doesnt look like a Disaster to me, i mean it made at least 48 million so far.
Making all in all 10 million would be a disaster to me, but still...not good at all.

That has to be Spielberg's biggest flop, right? Even taking his name out of it, audiences just aren't going for movie musicals that much these days unless it's Disney. Either way, he still set out to do what he wanted and achieved that goal. The awards season attention will probably help it since I think this will be seen a lot more by people at home in the coming months.

I don't like musicals, West Side Story was one of the few I did like (along with The Sound of Music and Grease), it's hard to see how it could be surpassed.

I watched this movie back to back with original and it was great. The direction, acting, cinematography was second to none. I was blown away start to finish and it may be one of the best films, if not the best movie of 2021. Excellent film.

I love to see all the praise this is getting on social media, but it hurts that none of these people showed up to support the movie when it was in theaters. Really brilliant work from a master of cinema and a great cast & crew. The most "Spielberg" movie he's done since Catch Me If You Can.

I’ll probably see it on Wednesday or Thursday once it hits Disney+.

yeah when I saw it in theaters I was the only person in the theater.

Not sure what they were expecting. They knew the target audience wasn’t back yet when they released it.

The target audience is everyone though. I'm sure they were hoping young audiences would come out and embrace it.

While it didn't do so hot at the box office, ultimately it's not like there was the chance of a sequel riding on it. It's about to get a whole lot of eyes on it once it hits streaming.

Problem is how do we get more movies like this made when they crumple at the box office. 'Evan Hansen' excluded, 2021 was an incredible year for movie musicals, yet could ultimately hurt the genre even more than 'Cats' did.

I really like movie musicals but I just don’t have a desire to watch them in a theater. It looks like a lot of people feel the same way. Did West Side Story really need to be made for $100 million?

I hear you but you have to look at the circumstances too. Looking at the two biggest musicals this year and putting the easy excuse of the pandemic aside, In the Heights was released on HBO Max the same day as its theatrical run which didn't do it any favors at the box office and West Side Story, as great as it is, is still a remake which wouldn't necessarily draw a huge amount of attention since it's been done before (albeit not quite as lovingly crafted as Spielberg's). I don't think either of those failing at the box office spells danger for musicals in Hollywood. I'm expecting Wicked will turn things around in that department.

I forgot about Wicked then I looked up that Ariana Grande is going to be Glinda and any enthusiasm I had just left.

Have you seen it? Every dollar is on the screen. The film is the most cinematic movie I have seen in awhile. Probably my favorite theatrical experience since Dunkirk in 70mm.

I mean... irrefutably yes. It's peak cinema, a movie that is made to be seen on the big screen. You couldn't have pulled it off to this degree for less. And while I'm very happy more people will see it on streaming, it just won't be the same.

But what was the money spent on? Special effects? The cast salaries? You couldn’t get the same quality for less money?
