Stolen Uber Accounts Are Selling for a Dollar on the Dark Net

jp0946evujekxlpogilm.jpg

Anyone with a spare dollar can buy access to stolen, active Uber account information. Vendors on the new darknet market AlphaBay are peddling Uber user details.

You can buy all sorts of illicit stuff through darknet markets, from drugs to weapons to counterfeit goods. But this is the first time we've seen a high-profile sale of Uber account info, enabling people who pay for the stolen details to log in to Uber and take rides using someone else's account. One vendor, Courvoisier, who jumped over to AlphaBay after Evolution shut down, has already sold hundreds of these accounts.

Motherboard's Joseph Cox dug around and contacted some of the people whose accounts leaked, confirming that at least some of the accounts are legit:

Motherboard received a sample of names and passwords available and verified that at least some of the accounts were active by contacting those users. The data includes names, usernames, passwords, partial credit card data, and telephone numbers for Uber customers.

Looking at the feedback, it's clear that people like what they're getting. It's all positive, with remarks like speedy delivery and work perfect.

Courvoisier told Cox they have thousands of passwords, but oddly enough, Uber has stated that there has been no data breach:

"We investigated and found no evidence of a breach. Attempting to fraudulently access or sell accounts is illegal and we notified the authorities about this report. This is a good opportunity to remind people to use strong and unique usernames and passwords and to avoid reusing the same credentials across multiple sites and services."

So that's weird. It's not clear how the vendors gained access to so many Uber account details without hacking Uber. They could've hacked the Uber users individually.

[Requisite part of the article where I tell you guys not to actually buy stolen Uber account information, don't do that, it's very rude.]

Uber users have had to deal with leaked information before; over 50,000 drivers had their account details exposed last year thanks to a security screw-up. This time, it's not clear who screwed up—but some users are screwed.

Inmate Walks Free After Emailing Release Instructions to Prison Staff

wb9e6stxtzgegpep5xb7.jpg

An inmate who was in prison for multiple charges of fraud is apparently up to his old tricks. Posing as a senior court clerk, Neil Moore, 28, used an illicit mobile phone to email fake bail instructions to prison staff, who released him. Well, that's embarrassing.

Moore was being held at Wandsworth Prison in the UK for persuading organizations to give him nearly 3 million US dollars, by posing as staff from Barclays Bank, Lloyds Bank and Santander. In his most recent deception, which a trial judge describes as "ingenious," Moore set up a fake web domain closely resembling that of the court service's official address. He used it to email the prison's custody inbox with instructions for his release. The deception was uncovered three days later, when solicitors went to interview Moore, only to find him gone.

Apparently, Moore felt guilty about his latest, because he surrendered himself only three days after he was discovered missing. He'll be sentenced on April 20th for 8 counts of fraud and one count of escape. For his next trick, Moore will spend 20 years tunneling himself out with a rock hammer.

Cops Question Harvey Weinstein Over Alleged Assault of 22-Year-Old Woman

cmtizylwir5iaixxvb2v.jpg

The New York Daily News reports that the NYPD has questioned film mogul Harvey Weinstein about allegations that he groped a 22-year-year old woman this weekend at a New York movie theater.

According to police sources who spoke with the Daily News, the woman claims Weinstein grabbed her genitals and breasts Friday evening at the Tribeca Film Center.

From the Daily News:

Weinstein has been questioned by police, and Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance will determine whether to file charges, a police source said.

"He initiated the contact," the source said of Weinstein. "He saw her and spoke to her. She didn't know who he was until he approached her."

Weinstein's reps haven't replied to the News' request for comment.

"Obsessed" Teacher Sent Thousands of Texts to 11-Year-Old Student

ztkpn49v3qbhqqwc1tui.jpg

A former Pittsburgh elementary school teacher is accused of being "obsessed" with one of her 11-year-old students, sending the girl thousands of text messages over a period of two weeks, and planning to run away with (and possibly even adopt) her.

Geraldine Alcorn, 28, was charged Wednesday with "child luring, corruption of minors and attempting to interfere with custody of the child," Pittsburgh's WPXI reported. She's currently free on a $100,000 bond and forbidden from contacting the child.

Police say that Alcorn's texts to the alleged victim—2,400 of them in just two weeks, according to the girl's mother—showed a "deep love" between teacher and student, and mentioned going "on the run" together.

And it (allegedly) gets creepier! Per WPXI:

Police said after the girl's mother discovered the messages on her iPod, she found handwritten letters in her daughter's school binder labeled "Things Ms. Alcorn and I can do," "What we can do" and "When we can do it."

Neighbors told Channel 11 Wednesday that they saw Alcorn on the front porch of the 11-year-old girl's house but always assumed she was an aunt or relative.

Alcorn also allegedly brought the girl to her own home at some point.

Alcorn was suspended by Pittsburgh Public Schools in early March; she resigned, then stopped by her former school to collect her things. Afterward, the girl found "gifts and several letters, some encrypted, in her locker and desk," according to court documents.

By "encrypted," police mean that Alcorn allegedly circled the digits of her phone number on the girl's math worksheet.

"Police don't believe Alcorn's attraction to the girl was sexual," WPXI reports.

Eight Dead, 10 Injured After Church Van Runs Stop Sign and Crashes

h9nkdrr1mo1ag8ljfi8z.jpg

A church van carrying 18 people ran a stop sign on U.S. Highway 27 in Glades County, Fla. before crossing four lanes of traffic and crashing into a canal early Monday. Eight people were killed and 10 were injured in the crash.

Lt. Greg Bueno, a Florida Highway Patrol spokesman, told CNN that the van belonged to a church in Fort Pierce, and was heading back from a trip to Fort Myers. While police have not released the name of the church the van is associated with, WPBF has identified the van as belonging to Independent Haitian Assembly of God.

According to the Associated Press, a four-year-old was among the van's passengers and is in stable condition; the driver was reportedly killed in the crash. Bueno also told USA Today that three passengers are currently in serious condition.

Rutgers Student Allegedly Took LSD, Got Naked, Stabbed Friend

eyj5t8zqzluojuvjz6eb.jpg

A Rutgers student was arrested for attempted murder on Saturday after police say the man removed his clothing and stabbed a classmate in the neck under the influence of LSD, the Associated Press reports.

Authorities say they found 22-year-old Kevin Huang "naked and pacing" when they arrived at the apartment where the stabbing occurred early Saturday morning.

According to a witness, Huang and 23-year-old Andrew Kim had taken LSD earlier in the evening when Huang suddenly became violent, got naked and started to destroy the apartment. After leaving to get help, the witness reportedly returned to find Kim bleeding from the neck.

While detaining Huang, police allegedly observed a large amount cash and drugs in the apartment, ultimately finding "15 pounds of marijuana, approximately 500 bars of Xanax, a significant amount of cocaine, other unidentified pills and crystals" after securing a search warrant.

Personal Details of World Leaders Leaked Due to Outlook Autofill

ihjhp4dkvs1x5uvxkzu7.jpg

It was all fun and games at the G20 Summit in Australia—until somebody accidentally leaked highly personal details of the world's most powerful leaders—including the names, passport numbers, birth dates, and visa details of everyone from Barack Obama to Vladimir Putin. The cause of the leak? Microsoft Outlook's autofill.

The most shocking thing about the G20 leak isn't actually the autofill detail, either, it's the secrecy. Australian officials decided not to tell 31 of the world's most powerful leaders that they'd accidentally shared their sensitive personal information with random people. In a letter obtained by The Guardian, an officer with the Australian privacy commission explains the incident and the reason the data was withheld:

The cause of the breach was human error. [Redacted] failed to check that the autofill function in Microsoft Outlook had entered the correct person's details into the email 'To' field. This led to the email being sent to the wrong person.

Yep that would do it. And why not tell the world leaders about the error?

Given that the risks of the breach are considered very low and the actions that have been taken to limit the further distribution of the email, I do not consider it necessary to notify the clients of the breach.

Just to be safe, the officer says that the recipient of the leaked email—a member of the local organizing committee of the Asian Cup—deleted the email and "emptied their deleted items folder." Case closed!

Not so fast. Australia's government has been under fire recently for passing controversial data retention legislation, so officials hiding an incident like this doesn't look good for transparency. Furthermore, when you leak the passport numbers of folks like Angela Merkel, Xi Jinping, Shinzo Abe, and David Cameron, you can't expect nobody to find out. Those viral photos of Putin holding a koala can only distract people for so long.

The FBI Would Like Us All to Unencrypt Our Phones

uvlahloy8mx2zxhc9bgd.jpg

When Apple decided to encrypt its iPhones by default, the move was hailed as a major step forward for security. Except, of course, by the FBI, which is now saying that such encryption should be outlawed. For the safety of Americans, of course.

This past week, FBI director Jim Comey came before the House Appropriations Committee to plead for a law which would force tech companies to create a backdoor into any communications device that uses encryption. Over at The Guardian, Trevor Timm explains why the Bureau's anxiety over the idea of Americans having more secure phones is not only hypocritical, but completely misguided:

The idea that all of a sudden the FBI is "going dark" and won't be able to investigate criminals anymore thanks to a tiny improvement of cell phone security is patently absurd. Even if the phone itself is protected by a passphrase that encrypts the device, the FBI can still go to telecom companies to get all the phone metadata they want. They can also still track anyone they choose by getting a cell phone's location information 24 hours a day, and of course they can still wiretap the calls themselves. Let's not forget that with a four digit passcode - like iPhones come with by default - can easily broken into by the FBI without anyone's help anyways. So a vast majority of this debate is already moot.

The only thing that's possibly more disturbing than the FBI's desire to make all of us less safe is the utter lack of technological literacy apparent among members of the Appropriations Committee Comey is now trying to persuade. Take, for example, this clip from the hearing, in which Representative John Carter, chairman of the subcommittee on Homeland Security, rambles for three cringeworthy minutes on the supposed "dangers" of encryption. The worst part? He prefaces his comments by saying, point blank, "I don't know anything about this stuff."

There you have it—a man in charge of doling out billions of dollars of cybersecurity money openly admits that he knows nothing about cybersecurity. The scene would be hilarious if its implications weren't so disturbing.

I think this tweet by Computer Science professor Matt Blaze sums up the situation perfectly: "Basically, the FBI is saying that they think you're more likely to commit a crime than need to protect yourself against crime."

Woman Arrested for Killing a Toddler in a Fast Food Restaurant Bathroom

iqtbn4kpc7hc8v0lie3m.png

NYPD officers responding to a fast food restaurant in midtown Manhattan today reportedly discovered a gruesome crime scene: a woman smothering a toddler to death.

Cops tell the New York Daily News that the woman, identified as Latisha Fisher, brought a two-year-old, Gabriel Ortiz, into a bathroom at Five Boro Burger in midtown around 3 p.m. Monday. It's not clear how they were related.

When a woman walked into the bathroom and saw the mother holding her hand over the baby's mouth, Fisher said "I put my hand over his mouth to put him to sleep," according to cops.

At some point the woman locked herself in the bathroom, according to police sources.

According to reports, customers and restaurant employees tried to intervene but had trouble bypassing the locked door.

When workers forced open the door, the child was unconscious and foaming at the mouth, according to the sources.

Ortiz was reportedly pronounced dead at Bellevue hospital.

Woman Stabbed Boyfriend Because He Ate All of Their Salsa

uvgxj7bziqq1j3jugy4s.jpg

The snack-provoked crime wave continues in America: One week after a father allegedly shot his son in the butt over an empty orange juice container, a woman in Akron, Ohio, allegedly stabbed her boyfriend in the stomach because he ate all of their salsa.

The Northeast Ohio Media Group reports that, Sunday evening, Phyllis Jefferson, 50, let her boyfriend know that he was eating too much of their salsa. He apparently continued to eat the salsa, because Jefferson ended up, allegedly, stabbing him with a pen in his hip for not sharing.

Things only got worse for the 61-year-old boyfriend. Evidently still angry, Jefferson knocked over the couple's TV. When her boyfriend stood up to catch it, she allegedly grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed him in his stomach.

The boyfriend was found by police outside their apartment clutching his stomach, his hands and shirt covered in blood, and was treated at a local hospital. Jefferson fled the couple's home but was arrested on a nearby interstate. She was charged with felonious assault and one misdemeanor count of criminal damaging.

The World's Most Famous Musicians Just Hosted a Bonkers Press Conference

fqlvixutvnrrbdelunfb.png

Only a few minutes ago, the entire music industry stood on a stage in a collective display of how rich and out of touch they are. They think you are willing to pay up to double the price of other streaming music services to pay for their streaming music service, because they are crazy.

Imagine this: canceling your Spotify subscription, and paying $20 for a Tidal subscription instead. It's more expensive because it's "higher quality" and "artist-owned," which is important because Usher, Daft Punk, and Madonna have been living in wretched penury for far too long, and it's time for people to give back. The modern-day Our Gang (which counted among its members not only the aforementioned supernovas, but also Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Kanye West, Chris Martin, and Jack White) held a "keynote" to promote Tidal, the already extant European streaming company Jay Z recently purchased for $56 million because he's bored.

freupwu6qb4d9yptkyiv.png

Jay Z and Beyonce (also present, beaming) dug up an old email thread (SUBJ: SURPRISE BRUNCH PARTY SATURDAY!), hit reply-all, and look at how many of their family friends turned out to stand on stage, visibly uncomfortable, and listen to Alicia Keys give an incoherent speech. At the conclusion of Keys' statement, which merged the rarely combined traits of being about an app and quoting Nietzsche, the artists all signed some sort of "declaration" one by one. I don't know what the document said—it was probably just a blank piece of paper, or perhaps an original copy of the Declaration of Independence that Deadmau5 received as a White Elephant gift.

ykbjujesieftwsjgzjbe.png

When it came time for Madonna to sign, she put her whole leg up on the table, as if to say to the world World, I'm MADONNA and yes I am not too old to move my leg this way. No one is going to use Tidal. These dummies!

Naked German Violinist Arrested for Allegedly Choking Woman at NYC Hotel

nkzddlqjbr28aelwtytp.jpg

A German violinist on tour in the U.S. was arrested after he reportedly got naked at a Manhattan hotel and tried to strangle another guest, a 64-year-old woman, in her room.

Witnesses spotted Stefan Arzberger, the 42-year-old lead violinist for the Leipzig String Quartet, walking around the Hudson Hotel buck naked Friday morning, police told the New York Post.

According to the criminal complaint against Arzberger, he knocked on the victim's door around 8 a.m., barged in, and choked her "so hard that the blood vessels in her eyes were ruptured," the Post reports.

Arzberger, who has no criminal record, was charged with strangulation and burglary. He's since been released on bond.

The Leipzig String quartet has since released a statement claiming the situation was more complicated than it initially appeared:

We have to announce that Stefan became on Sat. 26th victim of a serious crime in New York City. Things are in clearance now. At this time the lawyers do not allow to divulge more information. We feel great solidarity and hope for a sudden end of that nightmare! Stefan, we are with you!

A source told the Post someone may have drugged the violinist's drink, and claimed he has no memory of what he did that morning.

Terrifying video shows just how distracted teens can be when they drive

http://sploid.gizmodo.com/terrifyin...d-teens-can-be-1693889379/+kcampbelldollaghan

Damn it you stupid teens need to pay attention!

Just watched that video and wow, you've got teens literally staring at their phones for like 10 seconds while driving. I'm guilty of looking at my phone for a second or 2 here and there but I make a big effort to not text and drive.

But you'll never stop me from singing. Never.

The problem with this is it's ignoring all the adults who do the same damned thing or worse all the time. You know, the ones who are supposedly be mature, intelligent and not "dumb teens."

They don't and good luck to them trying. That ******* can say it's illegal but he has no law backing him up on that. If he wants to spy on someone he can get a ****ing warrant like the Consitution demands.

People have a right to privacy and their efforts have only fueled the fire to enforce even more encryption on everything (which is a damned good thing) making it harder for them to spy illegally on innocent people.

Manhunt Underway After Armed Prisoner Escapes Virginia Hospital

ahhn1nmjmhb16je1hmad.jpg

Fairfax County, Va. police are searching for an accused, armed bank robber who escaped the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus in Falls Church early Tuesday morning. Wossen "Bicycle Bandit" Assaye is wanted for allegedly robbing 12 banks in Northern Virginia and escaping on his bike.

According to the Washington Post, Assaye, 42, was arrested by police last week in connection with the bank robberies. He was taken to the hospital for treatment last Friday after apparently trying to harm himself while custody at Alexandria City Jail.

Police told NBC Washington that around 2 a.m. Tuesday morning, Assaye, 42, overpowered private security officers hired to guard his hospital room, allegedly taking one officer's weapon before fleeing. One shot was reported fired, but no injuries were reported. The hospital was briefly under lockdown while authorities searched for Assaye; police have since given the all-clear.

Hours later, at around 7 a.m. local time, a woman was carjacked miles away from the hospital and identified Assaye to police as her carjacker. Authorities believe Assaye may be in hiding with the help of his girlfriend, whose name has not be released but whose photo has.

Update, 12:06 p.m.: Assaye, the Washington Post reports, has been arrested by police in D.C. after carjacking another vehicle.

No One Has Any Idea How This Buick Ended Up On This Bridge Bike Path

mmx7wwrw65cyrsx3fyu8.jpg

Well, I mean, people have some idea. The Buick was driven on the bike path. It's just that most people can't figure out how someone would be clueless enough to drive a full-grown Buick all the way onto a bridge bike path on Lake Shore Drive by Chicago's Navy Pier.

What's remarkable about this is not that someone was dumb or drunk or *****ey or some other 'd' enough to drive on a bike path, but that to get the car to this point, they would have have to have driven about a full mile on the narrow bike path to get to where the car was found.

The Buick's right front wheel and axle are pretty well damaged, suggesting that at least at some point the reality of driving a full-width car on a narrow bike path made itself known. How, exactly did someone manage to get that far down the bike path? There's some interesting theorteical discussion happening at Reddit Chicago about it, but so far no one really knows what sort of black magic managed to put this Buick there on that bridge's bike path with no clear damage to any fences or barriers visible.

Be happy, my friends: there is still magic in this world. Stupid, stupid magic.
