Uber Driver Took Woman to Airport then Went Back to Rob Her House

jucjs1cnet0zr0vwmnuo.png

An Uber driver in Denver was arrested this week after he allegedly drove a woman to the airport, then drove right back to her house to rob it.

Cops say 51-year-old Gerald Montgomery picked up the victim on Thursday outside her Denver home. After dropping her at the airport, he allegedly doubled back to her home and tried to break in. Unfortunately for him, the victim didn't live alone.

Montgomery did not realize his passenger had a roommate who was still in the house and he fled when the "homeowner observed his actions", according to a police report.

The roommate was reportedly able to identify him based off a screenshot of the Uber receipt. In a statement, the company said it "immediately removed the driver's access to the Uber platform, pending an investigation."

But you won't be hearing Montgomery's side of the story—Denver's FOX 31 notes Montgomery "declined our request to be interviewed... in jail."

What a moron. Who could have guessed letting anyone with access to a vehicle become an Uber driver would turn into bad press?

Teen Playing With Cat Dies After Accidentally Shooting Himself in Head

dovjxhzeksneqxvn198i.jpg

The teenager who accidentally shot himself in the head Monday night after dropping his handgun as he was playing with a cat in a Nashville park has died.

Just after 10 pm Monday, 19-year-old Craig Lambert was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the head.

Witnesses told police that the accident occurred as Lambert—a student at Tennessee State University—sat with friends at a picnic table in Hadley Park. As the 19-year-old played with a cat, he either dropped his gun or it fell from his pocket, depending on which local news report you believe.

Metro police spokesman Dan Aaron told The Tennessean that the gun hit the ground and discharged, firing one bullet which struck Lambert in the head.

Teacher Takes an Axe to the Nuts in Physics Demonstration Gone Wrong

[YT]lzCtmkwU_-k[/YT]

This painful video is going around today as a story about a teacher who lost his job after accidentally bashing a student in the nuts with the flat side of an axe during a classroom demonstration. But according to someone who was there, it was actually the teacher with his sack on—or rather, just a little too close to—the chopping block.

dn85gb7hduhz2ol3qdtj.gif

The student seen here filming the debacle told Reddit:

He was just fine - it was a graze - not a full on partitioning. The person holding the axe is a member of staff (either an assistant principal or a hall monitor) that we asked to come help with the demonstration.

The teacher walked funny for like a couple of days and then he was just fine.

AP Physics I is fun because of stupid things like this happening.

So, there you have it: Despite appearances, the unfortunate axe swing got more jean than peen, and no one seems to have been fired over what could have been a truly tragic nutshot. The teacher is actually a hero who put his body on the line to teach high school students ... well, I'm not sure what, actually, but something.

Update: It was a lesson on force and area, the same student explained on Reddit. Specifically:

The concrete block is placed on a bed of sharp ass nails. The force is distributed across all the nails and thus the individual pressure from each nail is minuscule does not cause any damage to the teacher under the bed of nails

Yet another story showing how everyone who wants to carry a gun needs to go to gun safety courses. I highly doubt this would have happened had the safety been on

Two points:

1. Why was a 19 year old carying a handgun? You have to be 21 in the US to biy or own a handgun so either he bought it illegally, stole it, or a parent gave it to him. Either way someone is probably going to be in trouble if the cops find out who he got it from.

2. ThIs is a good example of why a person should always make sure their gun has a drop safety. Handguns made by Glock and Springfields and some other manufacturers have what's known as a drop safety. It an internal mechanism that keeps the firing pin from hitting the bullet. So that if the gun gets dropped or bounced around the firing pin wont move and tap the bullet. That safety can only be disengaged by pulling the trigger. Any gun without a drop safety should only be carried in a secure holster.

Gaza Man "Cheated" Into Selling Banksy Painted on His Door for $175

niyzjkgbfcnkip2ubped.png

When Banksy lands in a city and begins a street art-making spree, there's a routine that usually follows. First, the stenciled paintings are ignored, then, after people realize what they are, they are gawked at and occasionally vandalized. Eventually, they are cordoned off and protected from the public, and finally, they are physically removed, and someone makes a lot of money, or hopes to. An extreme version of this complex lottery played out for one unlucky family in Gaza recently.

The anonymous British artist visited the war-torn region in February, painting a series of works including the crying goddess Niobe above. Rabie Darduna, who owns the decimated house that Banksy used as his canvas, told the BBC that he was hustled into selling the Niobe door for just 700 shekels, or about $175. His works regularly fetch five and six figures at auction.

The Darduna family property was one of some 18,000 in Gaza that were destroyed during last year's 50-day war with Israel, displacing 110,000 people, according to the United Nations.

"It was a two-storey building but only the door was left standing," says Mr Darduna. "Then a young, foreign man came and painted on it."

...

They convinced him they were acting on behalf of the artist and wanted to buy the door, as it was part of a series of works.

"They said they wanted to put it in a museum in Gaza where everyone could see it," Mr Darduna explains.

"One man told me: 'We're from the group that did it.' They made me sign a paper. It said I agreed on 700 shekels. They pressured me and I accepted because I need the money."

In 2015, Banksy is purely an economic phenomenon. The financial squabbling that follows in his wake is almost always more interesting than the uninspired artwork that sparked it. He may as well be dropping bags full of freshly minted money behind him.

A spokesman for the artist told the BBC that Banksy believes the door should be returned to its rightful owner—and it certainly sounds like Darduna's family could use the cash. Maybe Banksy can just paint another one?

Woman Wearing "Dropping a Load" Shirt Busted Pooping in Box at Kmart

kityf7qasczbdw9vvypi.jpg

Dress for the job you want, not the job you have. So goes the old axiom, apparently taken to heart by Melissa Jacobson—a woman whose current occupation is unknown, but who evidently aspires to the title of “lady who poops and pees inside cardboard boxes at Kmart.”

Jacobson was arrested in Racine, Wisconsin, this week after allegedly pooping and peeing inside a cardboard box at Kmart, wiping with paper towels, and calmly approaching the customer service desk and making a return—all while proudly advertising her intention to do so on her shirt. The criminal complaint against Jacobson, obtained by The Smoking Gun, reads in part:

“LPO Volkes reported that he entered aisle #1 to report for his shift and detected a ‘funky’ odor, so he looked down and observed a box containing...both urination and defecation...Upon arrival, Officer Lewis reports that he observed Jacobson’s shirt, which had a picture of a dump truck on it, as well as the phrase, ‘Dropping a Load.’”

“Public bathrooms...were located approximately 50 feet from the customer service desk,” the complaint continues. “LPO Volkes reported that Jacobson shops at Kmart frequently, so she should know where the public restrooms are located.” According to another employee, the pooper did not appear to be drunk or under the influence of drugs, “nor did she appear to be in distress.”

Jacobson is currently out on bond, the conditions of which stipulate “no contact with victim store, Kmart.”

NYC Art Dealer Allegedly Sold 13th-Century Sculpture Looted from Temple

z2eji4gbh2uk5grbjbbl.jpg

In 1983, a statue of the Buddhist deity Samvara like the one above was stolen from Kathmandu’s Itum Bahal Temple, a structure that dates to the 13th century AD. Thirty years later, a Brooklyn art dealer may have unloaded the plundered artifact for $370,000.

DNAinfo reports on the case of Greenpoint- and Upper East Side-based dealer Nayef Homsi, who is alleged to have sold the Samvara and two other stolen sculptures between 2012 and 2013 for a total of around half a million dollars. Papers filed by the Manhattan District Attorney’s office and obtained by DNAinfo claim that Homsi knew the works were stolen before he sold them, and that he will likely be arrested “within the next few days.”

The evidence, at least in the case of the Samvara statue, doesn’t look good for Homsi: an expert allegedly told him the statue was “almost assuredly” stolen from Itum Bahal before the sale, and Homsi himself acknowledged that it had “the black spot of theft” in an email. The buyer was an unidentified party in Beijing.

Homsi’s reputation isn’t as a shady black market operator: his website advertises many apparently legitimately acquired artifacts, and his UES gallery has received positive mentions from Bloomberg, Collect magazine, and the New York Times. A law enforcement source told DNAinfo that Homsi is a “minor player” in a larger investigation.

Price Is Right Model Cries After Accidentally Giving Away a Car

Ever royally screw something up at your job? Ever royally screw something up at your job on television?

Tonight we say a prayer for poor Manuela Arbelaez, a six-year veteran of the show whose chagrined realization that she royally messed up is the kind of punishment even a sterner sort of parent might recognize and accept as punishment enough.

Diplomat's 15-Year-Old Kid Charged with Murder in Drug Deal Gone Wrong

xixyowryfzotnp8jceqn.jpg

Two teenage sons of a Canadian diplomat allegedly walked into a drug deal in Miami on Monday. But only one walked out, and now he's facing murder charges.

Miami police say 15-year-old Marc Wabafiyebazu and 17-year-old Jean Wabafiyebazu—sons of diplomat Roxanne Dubé—drove their mother's BMW with diplomatic plates to a drug dealer's home, where they got into a dispute over about $5,000 worth of marijuana.

Reports the Miami Herald:

Police believe Marc Wabafiyebazu and his 17-year-old brother Jean Wabafiyebazu — both armed with guns — planned to rob the drug dealers on Monday afternoon at a home in the Coral Way area.

In the gunfire, Jean was shot and killed inside the home. One of the suspected drug dealers, Joshua Wright, was also killed. A third man, Anthony Rodriguez, was wounded and drove off. He was later found at a nearby gas station.

“That’s what we believe, it was a a dispute over a drug transaction,” Miami Police Chief Rodolfo Llanes told the Miami Herald.

Marc is facing felony murder charges plus additional charges for threatening to shoot the arresting officer. [Diplomatic immunity generally applies only to the diplomat.]

Dubé was reportedly named Consul General in Miami in November. Her husband, Germano Wabafiyebazu, tells reporters Marc only fired his gun to "alert police."

This would have never happened had they been brought up in Canada. And firing your weapon is not the traditional way one alerts polce

Lovestruck Man Pleads Guilty to *********ing Into His Co-Worker's Coffee

t8or4ouo1xvuz8rejbue.jpg

The Minnesota man who *********ed into the coffee cup of a co-worker he had a crush on pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of indecent exposure on Thursday.

On August 26, a woman working at Beisswenger’s hardware store in New Brighton contacted police to report a co-worker—later identified as Robert John Lind—who she claimed was leaving some sort of bodily on her desk and in her coffee. From WCCO:

She told police that she had found Lind standing at her desk with his back turned toward her. Lind allegedly had both of his hands in front of him near his genitals.

According to the original complaint, when Lind noticed the woman he looked at her with a “deer in headlights” expression and quickly went into another room.

The woman told police she inspected her desk and noticed a strong odor that resembled urine, but was a bit different and strange.

She said her coffee smelled the same way and noted that she had had an ongoing issue with a experiencing a foul taste in her coffee.

Two days later, Lind confessed to jerking off onto his co-workers desk a total of four times and into her coffee twice. While confessing, Lind reportedly told police that he’s had a crush on the woman and that the *********ion was in revenge for the woman threatening to report his prior inappropriate behavior, which included approaching her multiple times with his zipper down.

xqcpdvleiheidn3ycpls.jpg

Felony charges against Lind were dropped in November, when the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office determined there was not enough probable cause to support a specific definition of “sexual contact.”

“Unfortunately, there are no other applicable felony charges that we can file at this time,” a spokesperson for the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office told WCCO.

Pablo Runs Through Airport Shouting: I'm Pablo, I Will Be Famous

pflewywxi6fhwgc0yq4x.jpg

Pablo, a famous celebrity with whom you are by now surely familiar, was arrested this morning for allegedly running through New York's John F. Kennedy airport, shouting, "I'm Pablo, I will be famous!" Mission accomplished, Pablo.

Pablo—whose birth name is Claudio Duran, go figure—made his gambit for the spotlight shortly after abandoning what police say was a stolen bakery truck on the street near Terminal 8. ABC 7 reports:

At about 6 a.m., Port Authority police responded to a report of a possible breach at the main checkpoint of the terminal.

The suspect was yelling, "I'm Pablo, I will be famous!" as he ran through the American Airlines terminal, according to Port Authority police.

Claudio Duran, 20, of New York, was arrested and charged with grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, criminal trespass and trespass.

Like Norma Jean Baker willing herself into stardom as Marilyn Monroe, or Jimmy Gatz becoming Gatsby on the road to his orgastic future, so did Pablo, shedding the baggage of his past life as Claudio Duran in a headlong sprint toward Gate 37.

We'll be watching his next move closely.

Mother Killed, Son Wounded After They Laughed at Unhinged Gunman

ndpl1zuhxoqbmngu8ciw.jpg

In a bizarre sequence of horrendous events, Denise Chiffon Berry was shot and killed near Los Angeles on Wednesday—seemingly at random—by a gunman who followed her and her son in their car.

According to police, Berry, 44, was driving with her 12-year-old son on Kornblum Avenue in Hawthorne, Ca. Wednesday afternoon when the two apparently spotted a Cadillac with a man's legs hanging out the window.

“This is what the little boy is saying,” Hawthorne police Lt. Dave Coleman told the Daily Breeze. “Mommy says, ‘Look at that, isn’t that funny?’ and they made eye contact. She drove on and they began following her.”

When she realized the Cadillac was following her, the Los Angeles Times reports, Berry then drove up to a police officer parked in his vehicle, alerting him to her situation. The officer apparently instructed her to park her car in front of his; as she parked, the Cadillac reportedly drove up, and one man opened fire with two handguns, killing Berry and her injuring her son. The officer exited his car and returned fire, killing the shooter.

The gunman, Robert Washington, 38, and the other two passengers in the car—Brandon Armolav White, 19, and Stanley Ross White, 24—police say, had "no connection whatsoever" to Berry. “It appears to be random or misguided,” Coleman told the Daily Breeze.

The brothers were both arrested by police. Stanley White, the driver, has been charged suspicion of murder and conspiracy; his brother Brandon has been charged with suspicion of conspiracy.

Berry's son was taken to the hospital after the shooting and is reportedly in stable condition.

Don't Pay for Drugs With Venmo You Big Dumbass

yt67rp0y3jcywoxnuqla.jpg

Capital New York reports that "Columbia University students are bugging out" after their favorite, smartphone-compatible drug dealer was busted by the cops. You'd think a bunch of Ivy Leaguers wouldn't need to be reminded, but paying for drugs with an app that logs the exact details of a transaction is a bad idea.

Michael Getzler, the alleged campus dealer, was arrested yesterday, only days after the Columbia Spectator published an essay by an unnamed drug dealer—an article Capital New York says was "widely rumored" to have been written by Getzler:

“Weed, edibles, MDMA, coke—I have sold all of these over the past week, in staggering amounts,” the anonymous student wrote. "Several hundred students (and I would call that a conservative estimate) will be smoking my weed this Saturday. There will be more than 100 students rolling on MDMA, thanks to me alone."

Getzler was widely rumored to be the anonymous author of the op-ed in comments on theSpectator website and on a private and anonymous digital message board at Columbia.

This is definitely very stupid. But it's not quite as head-fulla-rocks-and-sand stupid as using Venmo to pay for cocaine, which essentially builds an accurate, time-stamped, Facebook-connected database of you breaking the law. It only took me a few minutes to find Getzler's public Venmo feed:

idylom8tyluro1ilwzvt.png

There's nothing immediately incriminating in the feed, and it's not like anyone fills out the transaction descriptions on Venmo seriously anyway. But if this kid is guilty as accused, his clientele is screwed. So heed some wisdom from a late-20s dirtbag and pay for drugs with cash, dummies. Or better yet: get "high" on the satisfaction of working hard in school and being active as a leader on campus.

These idiots need to be told this stuff?

Guys I'm Not Sure This Senator Knows How the Internet Works

n6f2ibgbdhyghywtfunl.jpg

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Ca.) wants to remove The Anarchist Cookbook from the internet— you know, that notorious DIY bomb-making manual that has been around since the 1970s, is still available in print, the one you can buy on Amazon and find literally thousands of places online and offline for a pittance.

Feinstein made her modest, thoroughly impossible proposal in a statement following an incident where two women allegedly used a downloaded copy of The Anarchist Cookbook to make bombs:

I am particularly struck that the alleged bombers made use of online bombmaking guides like the Anarchist Cookbook and Inspire Magazine. These documents are not, in my view, protected by the First Amendment and should be removed from the Internet.

This is a serious suggestion from the former head of the Senate Intelligence Committee.

This isn’t the first time Feinstein has tried to rid the world of The Anarchist Cookbook, but it’s the first time she’s publicly suggested that it be “removed from the Internet,” which is striking because it’s 2015 and most adult internet users understand how difficult it is to scrub the internet of something that’s already been circulated possibly millions of times on the web. Has she never heard of the Streisand effect?

And this is your weekly reminder that Congress is populated by a gobsmackingly large contingent of people who do not understand technology.

We have got to get all these old idiots out of Washington

John Deere Thinks People Will Pirate Music With In-Car Computers

hcisr79h1r1hmb61xpxc.jpg

Did you know that it’s illegal to tinker with the code in your in-car computer? Thanks to the nuances of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), you’re not even supposed to inspect the inner workings of your vehicle’s circuitry. This is absurd, which is why the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is fighting for a better policy.

The EFF is currently entrenched in a legal battle to challenge DMCA overreach. In a new blog post—colorfully titled “Automakers Say You Don’t Really Own Your Car”—the digital rights advocates share some of the absurdity that many vehicle manufacturers are slinging to justify the DMCA’s applications to in-car computers. This is the best:

John Deere even argued that letting people modify car computer systems will result in them pirating music through the on-board entertainment system, which would be one of the more convoluted ways to copy media (and the exemption process doesn’t authorize copyright infringement, anyway).

Yes, that John Deere. How about this: If you manage to pirate music in a tractor, you deserve a much better prize than a DMCA letter. You deserve to own the tractor you paid for. Repair it when it breaks down, even! And yes, you should be able to do whatever you want with your car’s computer—within reason.

https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2015/04/automakers-say-you-dont-really-own-your-car

Again, we have to get these old idiots out of Washington

It would be nice if we could get people who understand what they're actually trying to pass laws on.
