Wireless charging is one of those kinda-handy things thats almost been about to go mainstream for five years now. But Duracell is tired of waiting for the wireless charging revolution. Duracell wants you to wirelessly charge by plugging in this dongle instead. Wait, what?
The Duracell Powermat Power Ring is a $50 inductive charging coil (including charge mat), thinly veiled in plastic, which youre meant to plug into your non-wireless charging smartphone, enabling you to juice up without plugging in a wire. Instead, you have to plug in this big dumb dongle.
At first glance, youd think this was either a) a not-funny April Fools joke, or b) another crummy Kickstarter, but no. This is an actual thing that a company worth $4.7 billion thinks you should buy.
To be clear: this is not a thing you should even slightly think about maybe buying. No ifs, no buts, no oh but my Starbucks just added wireless charging mats. Just no.
Ooooooo a wired wireless charging mat. Is this one of those ironic things like the Iphone phones?

Everyone remembers the catastrophic oil spills like BPs in 2010. Few remember the slow motion spills, like Taylor Energys, which has been drip drip dripping for all of the past 10 yearsa leak shrouded in secrecy and seemingly impossible to fix.
An investigation by the Associated Press this week sheds some light on the Taylor Energy oil spill, which is even worse than previously thought. In 2004, Hurricane Ivan sent a mudslide that knocked over Taylor Energys platform. The wells underneath have been leaking ever since, at an estimated rate of over 33,000 gallons a year, six times that of an earlier estimate. A visible oil slick spreads out from the area.
How can it be 10 years and the leak is still going? On one hand, this leak is especially tricky to fix. The mudslide dumped sediment all over the wells, making the job harder than your typical plug and abandon. But Taylor Energy has also been especially secretive in their filings, refusing to disclose many details because of trade secrets.
Whats even odder about the whole story is that Taylor Energy is now only a ghost of a company now. The company sold off all of its offshore assets in 2008, and it has just one full-time employee now. It only still exists to deal with the oil spillhows that for a legacy?
Dr. Oz is full of crap. He peddles garbage advice on his garbage TV show. And that's not just my opinion. It's science! Science which tells us that Dr. Oz gives advice that's baseless or wrong about half the time. But now his peers in the medical community are speaking out.
Astoundingly, Dr. Oz is the vice chairman and professor of surgery at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Which are prestigious positions at a prestigious institution. But should someone whose promotes ridiculous weight loss cures and anti-GMO hogwash really hold these positions? A new letter addressed to the dean of the medical school at Columbia University says no.
As Skepchick reports, a group of esteemed doctors have finally had enough. Their letter to Dr. Lee Goldman, the dean of the Columbia University medical school appears below.
Dear Dr. Goldman:
I am writing to you on behalf of myself and the undersigned colleagues below, all of whom are distinguished physicians.
We are surprised and dismayed that Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons would permit Dr. Mehmet Oz to occupy a faculty appointment, let alone a senior administrative position in the Department of Surgery.
As described here and here, as well as in other publications, Dr. Oz has repeatedly shown disdain for science and for evidence-based medicine, as well as baseless and relentless opposition to the genetic engineering of food crops. Worst of all, he has manifested an egregious lack of integrity by promoting quack treatments and cures in the interest of personal financial gain.
Thus, Dr. Oz is guilty of either outrageous conflicts of interest or flawed judgements about what constitutes appropriate medical treatments, or both. Whatever the nature of his pathology, members of the public are being misled and endangered, which makes Dr. Oz's presence on the faculty of a prestigious medical institution unacceptable.
The letter was signed by ten doctors from places like Stanford University, the American Council on Science and Health, and the University of California, San Diego. It's unclear how Dr. Goldman will respond, let alone whether he'll do so publicly. But at the very least this letter helps publicize the fact that Dr. Oz continues to peddle garbage.
You'd think that having to testify in front of Congress and admit that much of what you say on your show has no science to back it up would've done that already.
I saw that this morning and it was refreshing to see someone finally stand up to pseudo-quack doctor claims like his.Doctors Ask Columbia University to Fire Dr. Oz Because He's Full of Crap

Nobody should listen to that tool
CNNHey, look what I did. That small boast on social media can trigger a whirlwind that spins into real-life grief, as a Texas veterinarian found out after shooting a cat.
Dr. Kristen Lindsey allegedly shot an arrow into the back of an orange tabby's head and posted a proud photo this week on Facebook of herself smiling, as she dangled its limp body by the arrow's shaft.
Lindsey added a comment, CNN affiliate KBTX reported. "My first bow kill, lol. The only good feral tomcat is one with an arrow through it's head! Vet of the year award ... Gladly accepted."
Phones rang hot
Callers rang the phones hot at Washington County's Animal Clinic, where Lindsey worked, to vent their outrage. Web traffic crashed its website.
Then an animal rescuer said that Lindsey's prey was probably not a feral cat but the pet of an elderly couple, who called him "Tiger." He had gone missing on Wednesday, the same day that Lindsey posted the photo of the slain cat.
CNN has not been able to confirm the claim.
As the firestorm grew, Lindsey wrote in the comments underneath her post: "no I did not lose my job. Lol. Psshh. Like someone would get rid of me. I'm awesome!"
That prediction was wrong.
Fired from clinic
The clinic fired Lindsey, covered her name on its marquis with duct tape, and publicly distanced itself from her actions.
"Our goal now is to go on and try to fix our black eye and hope that people are reasonable and understand that those actions don't anyway portray what we're for here at Washington Animal Clinic," said Dr. Bruce Buenger. "We put our heart and soul into this place."
The clinic told WBTX that Lindsey was not available for comment. CNN is reaching out to her. She removed her controversial post then eventually shut down her Facebook page.
Calls overload dispatchers
Callers also complained to the Brenham Police Department and Washington County Animal Control, as her Facebook post went viral.
The sheriff's office in Austin County, where the cat was apparently shot, is investigating, and Lindsey could face charges. Its dispatchers were overloaded with calls, the sheriff posted on Facebook.
"We are asking you to please take it easy on our dispatchers. As soon as the investigation is complete, we will post the relevant information here on this page," the post read.
$7,500 reward
Animal rights activists are pushing for charges.
"Animal cruelty must be taken seriously, and the guilty parties should be punished to the fullest extent of the law," said cat advocacy activist Becky Robinson. Her organization, Alley Cat Allies, is offering a $7,500 reward for evidence leading to the arrest and conviction of the person who shot the cat.
But others stood up for Lindsey. "She's amazing. She's caring," said customer Shannon Stoddard. "She's a good vet, so maybe her bad choice of posting something on Facebook was not good. But I don't think she should be judged for it."
She dropped off balloons at the animal clinic for Lindsey with a thank you note.
Hopefully the elephant escaped with no injury.A professional game hunter has been trampled to death by an elephant while leading a hunt with an American client in Zimbabwe.
Ian Gibson, 55, was tracking animals in Chewore North in the lower Zambezi Valley of Zimbabwe, when the young bull elephant began a full charge.
Paul Smith, the managing director of Chifuti Safaris which employed Gibson, told The Telegraph: "We don't yet know the full details of how 'Gibbo' as we called him, died, as the American client and the trackers are still too traumatised to give us full details."
In a note on the website of Safari Classics, the company explained Gibson had been searching for a target for five hours when they stopped for a rest.
"It is with deep sadness to announce the passing of Chifuti Safaris professional hunter Ian Gibson," the note said.

Ian Gibson was killed by a charging African bull elephant
"Ian was tragically killed by an elephant bull earlier today while guiding an elephant hunt in Chewore North."
It adds: Feeling he was quite close to the elephant, Ian and his tracker Robert continued to follow the tracks in hopes of getting a look at the ivory as the client stayed with the game scout. Gibsons tracker indicated the elephant was in musth a condition where the animals urge to mate goes into overdrive and it becomes overly aggressive, but Gibson continued.
The note continues: They eventually caught up with the bull, spotting him at about 50-100 metres. The bull instantly turned and began a full charge.

Ian and Robert began shouting in order to stop the charge. At very close range, Ian was able to get off one shot before the bull killed him. The scene was very graphic.
It is not known if the animal was killed in the incident.
Gibson is paid tribute to as a fine man and one of the most experienced professional hunters on the African continent.
The same company lost a staff member in 2012 when Owain Lewis was killed by a buffalo, NewZimbabwe reports.
Those poachers are monsters.I really don't know how anyone can kill an elephant. When I see a picture or video of an elephant I want to pet one or feed it or make it happy not shoot it.
It's one thing to hunt deer or some other animal that is plentiful and not in danger of extinction. Hunting an elephant will get you little sympathy from most people.
