The summer blockbuster season is the time of the year when Hollywood studios release their most commerical/mainstream/popcorn/mindless entertainment movies. HOWEVER, every once in a while a movie is released that has you thinking, "I can't believe they had the cojones to turn this into a summer blockbuster." So, to you what are some great examples of movies like that?

The first movie that comes to mind for me is Batman Returns. Just look at the opening for this movie:

WB had alot of faith in Burton to let him go crazy like that!

Another movie that comes to mind is Saving Private Ryan. Spielberg released that movie in the middle of July. Saving Private Ryan is the type of film that would be released during the winter/Oscar season. Releasing that movie during the middle of the summer blockbuster season took guts.

Forrest Gump. That one was also the kind of movie you usually see in the "Oscar season" (and it was also the big Oscar-winner of the year). And considering it was released in 1994 the box office numbers for it was really impressive:

Domestic: $329,694,499 48.7%
+ Foreign: $347,693,217 51.3%

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

= Worldwide: $677,387,716

Only problem with using Batman Returns is that the WB execs weren't exactly thrilled with Burton's movie and it shows with Batman Forever.

WB didn't have a problem with Returns till soccer moms started complaining.
